CKC/Pioneer Eleetronies Trans-Cal Series: Round Z O'Hara, Chandlerhead Hondasweep By Kit Palmer ADELANTO, CA, SEPT. 30 Johnny O'Mara and Danny "Magoo" Chandler were Team Honda's work horses at the second round of the Continental Motosport Club's Pioneer Electronics Trans-Cal Series at Sunrise Cycle Park. "I'm a little beat," said O'Mara after spending the previous night placing second at the CalExpo Supercross in Sacramenlo, California, lhen flying south lD win the 125 and 250ccclasses. "But, in general I feel preuy good." ''I'm feeling lhe besl I've ever fell," said Chandler after winning bolh mOlDS in lhe 500cc class. Chandler, riding an '85 production CR500 water-cooler, spent bOlh mOlDS dicing wilh brolhers Mike and Phil Larson. Minicycle ace Eddie Hicks conlinued 10 oUlclass everyone in lbe 80cc Expenclass by handily winning both mOlDS. Mini Expert 14 In lhe firsl mOlD, Suzuki-mounted Mike Pascarella captured lhe hole- ShOl Wilh Kawasaki rider Shaun WOOlen, Suzuki pilol Nicky Pounds and Hicks hOl on his laiI. Wilhin a few turns, Hicks already had lhe lead and started lD pull away. On lhe second lap, Wooten gOl OUl of shape and dropped 10 fifth, making lhe lOp four Hicks, Pounds, Colin Karcher and Shane Trittler. As Hicks extended his lead, Honda's Shaun Kalos began working his way up lhrough lhe pack after a poor Slan. Four laps into the mOlD, Kalos had control of lhird bUl was slill some distance behind Pounds. When the"checkered flag flew, Hicks easily crossed the finish line firSl ahead of Pounds, Kalos, Karcher and Ty Davis. The second mOlD was all Hicks'; The Yamaha pilol was lhe firsl rider into the firsl lurn and lhe firSl across lhe finish line. Hicks jumped lD a six-second lead by lhe end of lhe firsl lap and eXlended his advantage wilh each lap. Davis galed well and spent lhe entire moto in a comfortable second. Wilh a few laps left in lhe race, Kalos and Pounds were fighling closely for third; al limes lhe lwo were side-by-side, bUl Kalos managed lD hold lhe Suzuki rider back for lhird. Fiflh went 10 Pascarella. 125cc Pro Kawasaki's Bader Manneh was lhe holeshol artisl al lhe stan of lhe firsl I25cc mOlO, wilh Yamaha rider Tyson Vohland pulling up alongside Manneh during lhe following straight. As lhe lWO entered lhe second lurn, Manneh and Vohland banged bars a couple of limes before Vohland bit lhe dirt, dropping OUl of lhe mOlD. Manneh led the pack pursued by Kawasaki rider Mouse McCoy, Honda Support rider Erik Kehoe, Suzuki-mounted Doug Dubach and A.]. Whiling. Manneh quickly slrelched his lead 10 nearly five seconds over Kehoe, who had slipped by McCoy during lhe second lap. O'Mara galed poorly and was around 101h after lap one. As lhe race progressed, O'Mara labored his way lhrough lhe pack, as Kehoe SLaTled 10 gain ground on lhe leader Manneh. Near lhe halfway point, Manneh's lead over Kehoe shrunk lD only a bikelength. Kehoe tried Sluffing his Honda under Manneh in every lurn; lhen, in one wide, high-bermed lefl lurn, Kehoe dove lD the inside of Manneh wnich resulled in lhe lwo locking handlebars. Manneh and Kehoe crashed in a heap, which lel O'Mara, Honda Support rider Larry Brooks and Dubach slide by for firsl, second and lhird. As Manneh and Kehoe raced to re-enler lhe race, lempers flared a bil wilh some minor pushing and shoving while unt,mgling lheir mounts. Manneh recovered firsl with Kehoe glued to Manneh's rear fender. A lap and a half laler, Kehoe passed Manneh over a section of whoops, geuing a liule close, bUl making the pass cleanly. Meanwhile, O'Mara and Brooks, who also had a poor stan, were pulling away from lhe pack. Wilh one lap to go Dubach pulled off lhe track wilh engine problems, relenquishing lhe fourth spot 10 Kehoe. O'Mara look lhe win ahead of Brooks, Kehoe, Manneh and Suzuki R&D rider Mike Healey. M010 lwo was much simpler for O'Mara. The factory Honda star slole the holeshot wilh Brooks, Vohland, Manneh, Kehoe and Healey in tow. O'Mara and Brooks slayed close for lhe nexl few laps before Brooks crashed. "My front brake cable got stuck behind my front number plale," said Brooks. "So, coming OUl of a lurn, my front wheel washed OUl and I went down." This mishap lel Manneh gel within striking distance of Brooks, and two laps laler, Manneh had second. However, il didn'l lasl for long. "When Bader gOl close, I staned to ride framicIaly," said Brooks. "After he got by, I settled down and passed him back." O'Mara crossed lhe checkered flag 20 seconds ahead of BrOOKS, who was foltowed by Manneh, Vohland and Kehoe. 250cc Pro Yamaha rider jim Anderson enjoyed a shon-lived lead allhe slart of the firsl 250cc moto, before crashing wilh Honda rider Brian Manley. This gave lhe lOp Spol to Suzuki rider john Ray, who was chased by Honda rider Bill Ovellelle, Whiling, Hondamounted Pele Murray and jim Cobham.
