o ~ ...... .... Cl) ..0 o .... u o Manneh gets a handlebar stuck in his face by Erik Kehoe. Both crashed while fighting for the 125cc lead. Neither of the riders was hurt. (Top left), Danny Chandler again topped the 500cc class, while Johnny O'Mara (top right) won both the 126 and 260cc classes. A.J. Whiting rode in the 250cc class and came close to winning, but a 2-3 tally gave him third overall. At one time, Whiting led both motos. Following his Sa'cramento Supercross win the night before, David Bailey finished second in the 260cc class with a 3-2 combo. bikelengths closer to Whiting, but Whiting stayed tough and held the Sacramento Supercross winner in third. The win went to O'Mara, who was closely followed by Whiting and Bailey. Fourth and fifth went LO Honda rider Joe Wright and Yamahamounted Russ Wageman. Whitingjumped LO an early lead at the start of moLO two with Manley, Bailey, Murray, Honda rider Eric Kirk and O'Mara close behind. Whiting's lead was slim over Manley for the next .five laps, while O'Mara started to make up ground on Bailey. Near the end of the moto, positions started to change. The first rider to make a move was Bailey when he shot by Manley for second; ,a'Mara passed Manley a rap later. Soon after~ both Bailey and O'Mara snuck past Whiting. Then a duel between Bailey and O'Mara ensued that lasted to the end of the moLO. With a few laps left, O'Mara made his move: "David went wide in a turn, so I just. went inside and passed him," said O'Mara. "It was preuy much a basic move." A turn later, O'Mara looked back and waved to Bailey. Bailey LOok the gesture humorously. O'Mara went on to take tbe win and Bailey's second in the moLO gave him second overall, while third overall went to Whiting. Fourth in the moLO went to Manley, while fifth went LO Wageman. 500cc PrO Ph,il. ~lI~s,o ~QOk .t~~ ~~.t;ly ,lead at the start of moLO one in the 500cc class with Honda rider ScottSargent, Chandler, Mike Larson and Yamaha rider Gary DePillo following. By the second lap, Chandler had control of second and began setting his sights on Phil Larson. Chandler hounded Larson for a couple of go-arounds, then easily slipped by and took the lead. As Magoo pulled away, Mike Larson in his second race since breaking his shoulder at the Washougal National, began putting the pressure on his brother Phil. During the sixth lap, Mike powered past Phil for second. Phil started to drop back a bit, while M-Star's Greg Zitterkopf began closing on Phil. Preuy soon, Zitterkopf was righton Phil's rear fender, so Phil began to pick up the pace and caught back up LO M)ke. With one lap left in the moLO, Chandler was long gone, but the battle for second was close. Atthe checkers, Chandler LOok the win, while Mike Larson kept brother Phil and Ziuerkopf behind. Fifth went to Cagiva's Ron Turner. Mike Larson captured the holeshot - at the start of the second moto inches ahead of Chandler, Phil Larson, Honda-mounted Willy Simons, Yamaha rider Jim Ellis and Sargent. Mike and Magoo began to pull away from the pack as they dueled. However, the duel only lasted for three laps before Chandler zapped the younger Larson and started to pUll, i1way. Soon after, Phil began putting the pressure on Mike, and a lap later, second was Phil's. But Mike didn't give up; he put his water-cooled '85 production Honda into high gear and tried to retake second from Phil, who was riding an '84 air-cooled Honda. The dogfight lasted for many laps, until Mike bailed. "I went too fast through the whoops and started to swap," said Mike. "I went over the bars and crashed." Mike rejoined the moLO with bent handlebars, back at midpack. Zitterkopf, who nailed a seventhplace start, worked on EI Iis for fourth before he too crashed, breaking off his clutch lever. "I was trying to pass Elli!i," said Ziuerkopf. "But I hit a bump, got sideways and crashed." In the end, it was Chandler 18 seconds ahead of Phil Larson, Simons, ElIis and Honda-mounted John Reinholt. ''I'm feelin' really good," said Chandler afterwards. "In the first moLO, I passed Phil earlier than I wanted LOO, so the second time out, I just followed Mike around for awhile, just waiting, I still passed Mike earlier than I wanted LO, but I saw him make about four mistakes in one lap, so I decided to make my move. After lhat il was no problem." • Results 80cc EX: 1. Eddie Hicks (Yam) 1-1; 2. Shaun Kalos (Hon) 3-3; 3. Nicky Pounds (Suz) 2·4; 4. Ty Davis (Hon) 5-2; 5. Mike Pascarella (Suzl 6-5; 6.
