The racing Scott brothers, Gary and Hank, have appealed Lhe yet-to-bedetermined suspension and 1000 fines imposed on each after an altercation with Tim Mertens in the pits at the Ascot TT ational. Gary Scott and Mertens tangled in fir t lap traffic in their heat race, with Scott winding up on Lhe ground. A fistfight broke out after Mertens returned to the pits; Lhe Scotts say Mertens tried to run over Hank, then attacked Gary. AMA Professional Competition Manager Bill Boyce reacted quickly in suspending and fining the Scotts; Mertens was fined $100. Mertens paid his fine and rode the following night's half mile. To compete while the incident is under appeal the Scotts will have to pay their fines, and as of this time, neither has. The Scotts say they were treated unfairly by the AMA and have retained a lawyer; Gary is considering resigning as AMA rider rep. The final regular-season speedway race of the year at Costa Mesa's Orange County Fairgrounds, September 28, willreature an old timers' race. Bruce Penhall, Sammy Tanner, Steve Nutter, Scott Sivadge, Jan Ballard and Erwin Moon are expected to ride. A format for the race h.-s not yet been stablished. Theamateursupercross scheduled to run the day after the October 20 Oakland (California) Supercross has been cancelled. Thirteen-year-old Shannon Cirello scored 14 points to win the Junior Speedway National Championship September 23 at Inland Motorcycle Speedway in San Bernardino, California. Cirello took the win despite riding with an injured foot and a broken finger. Northern California's Scott Brant topped Greg Hancock in a run-off for second Completed coverage next week. Everett Brashear, Joe Leonard, ammy Tanner, tu Morley, Keith Mashburn, On Any Sunday creator Bruce Brown and Yamaha Racing Manager Ken Clark are among the former stars who will be appearing at Dick Mann's Vintage Dirt Bike Rally October 14. The rally features motocross, flat track and observed trials events for vintage dirt iron, as well as a bike show and swap meet. It will be held at Sand Hill Ranch near San Francisco, California. Stroh's Beer will sponsor Peter Sterr's television special on the Springfield Mile; earlier this year Stroh's funded specials on the Trans-Atlantic Match Races and Laguna Seca. Northridge Racing (Yam) won the eighth round of the WERA/Dunlop ational Endurance Road Race Series, an eight-hour at Summit Point Raceway in West Virginia. Details on tickets, etc, will be available shortly. ~RCYCLE INDUSTRY ffANGES Left Husqyarna's Mike Melton, the top AmerIcan scorer at the 1983 ISDE is still recuperating from a right ar~/ elbow injury sustained at the Iowa National Championship Enduro on September 2 and will not compete in the '84 ISDE in Assen, Holland, October 1-6. Melton was to be a mem ber of the U.S. World Trophy Team. The situation of the American Six Day team was further complicated when Ed Lojak, another member of the Trophy Team, was injured at the September 16 Minnesota Nalional Championship Hare Scrambles. Lojak, too, will not attend the IS DE, and that means two slots on the Trophy Team are vacant.
