Wells' fair go a success in Reno By Rob Hardy RENO, NV, SEPT. 8-9 The Nevada State Fair had a special attraction as motorcycle jumper Gary Wells combined his own daredevil stunts with a racing show of short track motorcycles, three-wheelers and micromidget cars. Saturday's schedule had heat races, alternating between the short trackers and the cars, with the three-wheelers doing a "fun to watch" exhibition. When the short track final was run it was Perry Pruette edging out local rider Branden Carnahan for the win. To climax the Saturday program, Wells performed one of his more complex stunts. He rode his CR500 a£( a ramp four sLOries in the air and onto a IO-wheel trai ler bed angled 45° up to serve as a landing ramp. Wells then gassed it hard to gain speed up the ensuing launcfiing ramp, jumped and landed hard on level ground. He locked up both brakes and slid up to the retaining wall, barely bumping the haybales. The jump was a success, and the only glitch was that Wells' crew would Gary Wells leaps off a scaffold as part of his jump/land/jump again stunt atthe Nevada State Fair, have to repair the landing ramp, since Wells punched a hole in it with his rear tire. Sunday's program started 0(£ the same as Saturday's, with heat races alternating between the bikes, threewheelers and cars. The big difference was that Wells performed his jump before the short track final. The reason was that he wanted to-race his CR500 MXer against the short trackprepped bikes to see how he' would do. This time Wells £lew further off the jumpand upon landing, had so much speed built up he went into the haybales lined up in front of the fence. It was a very controlled crash, however, as Wells immediately jumped off the bike when it hit. Wells gave the thumbs-up sign to the crowd, which responded with cheers and applause. In the short track final Wells started at the back of the pack, with a Carlisle dirt track tire on the back of his CRSOO and a standard knobby on the front. Wells was pressuring the leaders from the start, but after a few laps as he tried to pass another rider, they tangled and the rider went down. Wells stopped on the next lap to check on the rider's condition, and while the rider signaled OK, Yamaha rider Dave Ryan went on to win the final over Pruette. lechien mean machine at Answer/Dunes MX By Lee Taylor VALENCIA, CA, SEPT. 8 Honda's Ron Lechien went four for four to win the 250cc and Open Pro classes, rid.ing on a revised Shadow Glen circuit in the Answer Products Saturday MX Series at Indian Dunes. In the first 250cc Pro contest, Lechien took control in the back section o[ the track and soon left the field far behind. One of the best battles of the day was the one for second between Honda rider A.J. Whiting and Yama· ha pilot Jim Holley. They traded the position back and forth like a hot spark plug, until Holley retired to the pits with mechanical ills. Behind Whiting a dice involving Gary Bowman, Russ Wageman, Tracy Oswell, Larry Brooks and Erik Kehoe was shaping up. At the end of the race Lechien and Bowman held their positions firmly, with Oswell advancing LO third in front of Bowman and Kehoe. As the second moto got underway Lechien shifted from sixth LO hyperdrive, and only t1ie cinematic Doppler effects were missing as he disappeared from view. Oswell was an initial second ahead of Kehoe, but Kehoe advanced to the runner-up slot and held it. Whiting finished the moto in third, but heand Kehoe reversed their mota finishes to wind up second and third overall, respectively. Bowman and Oswell were fourth and fifth. In the Open Pro class, Lechien again wreaked havoc on thecompetition, riding a 1985 pre-production water-pumper ~ . Gary DePillo and Gary Jones finished 2-3. After placing third in the 2505, Kehoe toppled the 125cc Pro class with a pair of wins. Second went to top AMA I25cc National MX privateer Mike Beier (Yam), with Honda rider Larry Brooks third. Fresh from wins in Ponca City and Hurricane Mills, Kal-Gard Honda rider Willie Surratt topped the 125cc Intermediate contest. In the first mota the main competition was from Jim Spotts as the two pulled away from the pack and ran it to the wire, where Surratt took the win. Dave Heary, Gary Sailors and Craig White finished 3-4-5. The second mota belonged to Bob 31
