Ten riders competed in the run that started in Montgomeryville, Pennsylvania. and circled the U.S. with checkpoints in Seattle, San Diego and Daytona Beach. Contestants were required to ride SOOplus mil~s per day for 1 0 consecutive days and, according to Rose, "They were like astronauts at the start - they weren't too sure of what they were getting involved in. At the end. they were as emotional as I imagine the first astronauts were when. they finished their mission. While there were four riders who tied ·for the win, everyone who rode the event is a winner in my mind." Rose said he'll repeat the run next year. The Motorcycle Drag Racing Association will host the California Gold Cup Championship av the Famoso Drag Strip in Bakersfield on September 15-16. Husqvarna's Terry Cunningham clinched the National Championship Enduro Series title by taking the overall win in the September 9 Black Coal National in Lynnville, Indiana. Cunningham, the '82 series champ, lost 13 points in the IOQ-mile run, with Fritz Kadlec (Hus) placing second overall with a score of 16. Dave Bertram ,(Hus), jeff Russell (Hus) and jeff Fredeue (Kaw) rounded out the top five overall. One round remains in the series. Husqvarna's- Mike Melton, who sustained a hyprextended right elbow in the September 2 Iowa National Championship Enduro, did not compete in the Indiana round, After meeting with a physician, Melton was advised that he should take some time off from competition to allow the elbow to heal properly. "Right now, I'm not sure exactly how long I'll be out." said Melton. "I plan to go back to the doctor on Tuesday (September 11) and we'll take it from there."
