hard-charging Pete Murray (M-Star). Had there been another lap, Murray may have caught ZiuerkopI. Husqvarna's Dan Ashcraft was third. Yamaha's Mike Beier led the 250cc Pros from start w finish, but Malcolm Smith Racing' Gordon Ward, aboard a Honda, didn't let him get too far away. Beier anq Ward fought closely on the fir t lap and quickly caught up w the 500cc line. By lap two Beier was past most of the 500s and up w fifth overall with Ward in his shadow. Ward lost some ground in the back sections when an Open rider took him out, which was all the cushion Beier needed to win. In the final laps Ward tried desperately w catch up, but could only get close enough to wave at Beier as they went by each other in the spots where the track doubled back. Brad McLeod (Mud Sharks/Hon) came home a distant third. Kawasaki-mounted Campbell spent much of the I 25cc race chasin~ Dou~ Dubach (Suzuki Country/Pro Circuit). Dubach got an early lead and for the first lap had Campbell glued to his rear fender. Dubach could only gain a few seconds over the next few laps before he bailed over a berm, giving Campbell a comforiable lead. Dubach recovered quickly, but was down by quite a few seconds. As Campbell rode on for the win, Team Green's Steve Stewart was busy making his way through the field after a first-turn crash left him dead last and well behind the pack. Stewart's toughest obstruction was third place Mike Healey (Sinisalo/Oakley Suz) who held him at bay for a couple of laps. However, Stewart broke through on the last lap to take third behind Dubach. Another come·from-behind ride was put in by Gary Demon (Suzuki of Riverside). After missing his kickstarter on the dead engine start, Denton got away nearly last but managed to move up to fifth by the finish. Thompson stomps DeAnzaMX By Mike Gillies SUNNYMEAD, CA, SEPT, 2 Suzuki-mounted Scott Thomp- son put together a 2-1 score to clinch on overall win in DeAnza's 125cc Beginner class over Barnes Yamaha's David Bautista. Suzuki Country's Many Norris shot inw the lead of mow one with Thompson and Andrew TroneI' (Suz) in tow. Thompson swle the lead from Norris on the first lap, and was soon dicing with Shawn Slayton (Suz), who had worked his way from a midpack start. Trotter dropped out of comemion on lap three, while run· ning third, because of a fIat rear tire. Bautista spent most of the moto trying to pass Daniel Garcia (Suz), which he did on the sixth lap. Slayton had taken the lead from Thompson midrace, and held on w it through the checkered Oag. Thompson was second, followed by Bautista, Jeff Mar· tin (Hon), and Norris. Thompson led the second mow from starlto finish, but still had Slayton to fight with because Slayton crashed on the first lap along with Garcia, and waited for the pack to come around before resuming. Bautista was second off the line followed by Martin and Norris. Chris SaJi&bury (Hon), who was seventh in the first mow because he started with the 250s, was dead last in the start of this mow. Salisbury showed no fear though, and put on a charge that took him to second ahead of Bautista by the halfway mark.
