Gibson's strong third position was beingchallenged by Rutten. Rutten's persistence and aggressiveness dialed him into third. Rutten wasn't satisfied. Rutten was reeling in Lawrence. As Rutten closed in, Lawrence succumbed to the pressure and at the checkers it was Norman, Rutten, Lawrence, Gibson, Lee and Ficarotta. In the500cc Intermediates, Mike Price dominated all laps followed by Louis Peick Jr., Bryan Strathan and Jim Lichlyter. Pastoret opens Dunes' inaugural CMC night MX By Kenneth Stein VALENCIA, CA, AUG. 17 Honda rider Pat Pastoret won both I25cc Novice motos as the Continental Motosport Club returned to Indian Dunes for the first time in nine years. Most of the riders held American Motocross Enterprises cards which, according to CMC President Stu Peters, will be accepted for quite a while. Honda-mounted Joe Gelson took the lead at the drop of the gate, but Pastoret squeezed past on the first lap. The pair battled until Gelson crashed early on the third lap, allowing Jerrhod Thames' Kawasaki to move up to second. Wase Gatlin pushed his Honda past Trestin Simpson's KX for third on cpe final lap. Simpson, from Phoenix, holeshot 500 PRO: 1. Kenny Donelson (Han); 2. Den DeYoung (Han). 250 PRO: ,. With the light turnout at the Continental Motorsport Club's first meet in over a month here, the Pros chose to com bine their classes for' a bigger 16-rider ante. Sands, on the only 500 in the field, wasted no time taking the lead, and stayed at the front all the way to the checkers. Craig Cable's 250 took second from similarly attired Tim Nash with only two laps left. Andy Jefferson's fourth-place Husky 250 broke the Honda stranglehold. Sands picked up where- he left off in the second moto with a holeshot ahead of the RM250s of Chris fleming and Jim Cobham. Before the lap ended, Cable took second, but fell on the next lap. He picked himself up and moved from next to last up to [ourth by the end. Fleming, meanwhile, charged after Sands and took the Il!ad with one lap left. Fleming bobbled and lost the lead on the last lap as Sands flew by for his second win. . . Alan Olson set the Intermediate class on fire with two wins aboard his 250 Yamaha. Brady Helm's RM holeshot the first moto, but it only took two laps for Olson to move from his third-place start to take Helm. Loren Pochirowski kept his Honda in the hunt and finished third behind Helm. Olson took command right at the start of the second heat and built up a I6-second lead on Helm by the end of the race. Pochirowski again salvaged third. The 125cc Junior class had their eyes opened, as in the mixed field of the first moto, Novice rider David Bress beat. the entire Junior field while massacring the rest of his class aboard a Kawasaki 125. He beat all but the top two Juniors in the second heat. Of those who are already Juniors, Todd Saylors' KX moved from sixth' to hold off the Honda of Zach Halopoff in Bress' wake for the firstmoto win. He took the lead from Doug Hawkins' Suzuki in the fifth lap of the second moto for the overall. Results PRO: 1. Richard Sands (Han); 2. Craig Cable (Han); 3. Chris Fleming (Suz). 250 INT: t. Hicks clicks at CMC Baylands MX By Mike Vancil FREMONT; CA, AUG. 22 Todd Hicks, the only racer at this Continental Motosports Club-sanctioned motocross at Baylands Raceway to have competed at Ponca City, showed why he was expected to do well in the big Oklahoma event. Hicks catapulted out of the starting gate and just plain ran away from the 80cc Junior/Intermedia te/Expert field. Hicks was expected to win and he did. His Moto-X Fox/Scott Goggles/ PJ-I Oil/Hayward Suzuki-sponsored RM ran flawlessly. The nearest entrant to Hicks' Expert ride was Jess Britain on a Kawasaki, the leading Intermediate, one quarter lap behind Hicks. Ricky Peixoto didn't get overly concerned about all the fast Interrnediatesand Experts in front of him; he just methodically went about winning the Junior class by putting together a 1-2 in the two motos aboard his Yamaha. In the bigger displacements, star of the evening was Phil Douglas on a Peninsula Honda-sponsored CR in the 250cc Pros. In the first moto Douglas got off to a rotten start but worked up to third behind Devon Joos. (Hon) and leader Tony Richards on his Maxev Portinj;1;/Kawasaki Motors West KX. Richards led seven laps before bailing off and giving the victory to Joos. Moto two saw Craig Chistianjump into the lead. At mid-race Douglas got under the Yamaha rider and held on to the checkers to earn top spot at the payout window. Results BO NOV: ,. David Mcintosh (Yam); 2. Jason Warren (~aw); 3. Tad Dia. (Kaw).
