John· son won the title in the most talentpacked class against three former Nalional Champions (Mark Barnet!, Kent Howerton, Bob Hannah) and two proven newcomers (Ron Lechien, Billy Liles), all on works bikes. More against drugs In reference to Larry Jensen's leuer in your August 29 issue: I do not have a B.A. in psychology, philosphy, law or sociology but I think I do have good common sense, and common sense lells me lhat Dr. William Halstadt was an exception as far as a junkie living to a "ripe old age." Mr. Jensen didn't happen 10 mention what the good doctor's cause of death was, did he? I also like the parI about how a "simple bust" can do more harm to a person than the drug itself. I would like 10 introduce Larry to a friend o{ mine who never once gOI bUSIed, bu I he has been geui ng stoned for so long he is about as productive as a neutered animal. He was once a straight A student. Now he walks around the neighborhood talking 10 trees - just another guy with a problem where drugs are not responsible_ Let's {ace the {act: drugs o{ any kind don'l make it. And let's SlOp the bull about puning c.o(fee in the same category as heroin_ The neXl thing you know, people will tell you drinking Coke leads to pot - remember thaI one. Listen. I got high on just about everything {or 15 years. I had to learn the hard way and nobody could tell me what todo. I knew itall. And leI'S not get together and say "It's not going to happen to me." That's what three of my friends said. They're no longer here thanks to downers and junk. I take my hat orr to people Like Keith Code who, when they see some· thing wrong, have enough guts to stand up and do something about it. BOB KING Redlands, CA la~ge part o{ t~e time spent doing trick perform 109 (wheelies and jumps). ow I would like to u e this skill to perform for gatherings of 'people and let them know the reason why I'm doing it; to raise funds {or people less fortunale than we. What I need to do is to get in con· tact with someone who has had pre· vious experience in performing said motorcycle stunts. I have read your paper quite often, and have seen articles in the Latest Poop concerning stunt riders. I would like to be able to gel an address or any information that could assist me in this endeavor. If you can help me in any way il would be greatly apprecialed. Thank you. CHARLES WILLIAMS 2844 Lane Dr. Concord, CA 94518 Your contention that "the best riders don't do drugs" can only be upheld if you omit alcohol from the catagory of "drugs." However, alcohol clearly is a drug and clearly the best racers the world has seen do not include alcohol on their personal list of "never touch the sturr." I certainly am not arguing lhal an alcoholic racer is doing himseH any favors. But it is lrue lhat even the best use alcohol in moderation, and even occasionally use it to excess. One need only to look al the festivities after a World Championship road race, or any other race, to catch the winner frequently getting more than ju t a little bit smashed. . These winners and champions have In common the sense 10 party after the race and riOl before_ Bu t your absolutist pronouncements ju t do not Land up to an examination of the facls. I do not "favor" drugs. I merely advocate common sense and the prin· ciple of moderation, and I deplore overstatements and hysleria. LARRY JENSEN AFM #803 Los Gatos, CA This exchange started when we came out against the use of marijuana, cocaine and alcohol by riders in the pits prior to races. Your last letter, printed in our August 29 issue, made a case that use of drugs, including cocaine and heroin, did not preclude "major scientific or cultural contri· butions to our society." Your letter stated that "drug use (is) not a black and white issue." That certainly sounds pro-drug to us... Editor. Steve Oort says thanks I have retired {rom racing the Na· tional circuit. A thank·you to Tom and Linda Heyser o{ Heyser Cycle of Laurel, Maryland will never be enough to show my gratitude for years of continued help, raith, a place to sleep and a home away {rom home. Tom Heyser is truly a motorcyclist and badc.s his sport by helping young guys like mysel£. Whenever I hear the word "sportsman" I think o{ Tom Heyser. I would also like to thank Simpson Helmels, Castrol Oil, Steve Slorz, Larry Scba((erandalllheemployeesal Heyser Cycle. Without all their help an already rocky road would be filled with boulders. Again, many thanks. STEVEOORT 1983 National #61 Anaheim, CA WheeUes. wheeUes for the poor Bei ng a race fan, a rOOler for the underdog and a Yamaha rider, I am very pleased thaI Ricky Johnson has won the 250cc National Molocross Championship. I believe lhal Yamaha gOI more advertising and real R&D oul of this season due to the use of production-based bikes by Ricky and After I read Larry Jensen's leller I had to send my opinion in. This man obviously has done too many drugs himself to feel so strongly for drug usage to think il could make somebody successful. I don't race and I've never been to college like Jensen has, bUl I'm still smart enough and skilled enough to know that drugs and road racingdon't mix al all. Your reply to Jensen's lellersummed it up by men· tioning thaI those who use drugs will never be lhe best. Please continue your features with Keith Code. Jensen should do us all a favor and Slay 0(( the track. TERRY EANNETTA Bravo Company FPO San Francisco, CA Production motocrossers I would like to start my own organization to raise money to help feed the starving people in various parts of the world: There will be no profit recei ved as 100% of the funds received will go {or lhis cause. For several years I rode motorcycles in the street and in the dirt. with a Too many drug. . 'I' Publi.hed I.tt.rs do not nec....rily reflect the posi- tion of Cycl. N_s.lnc. Send I.tt.,. to Voices.
