The temperature was over 100, it was "Fox Night" at Inland Motorcycle Speedway and the racing was also hot. The hottest thing around, however, was "Flyin' Mike" Faria who captured his eighth regular (ninth total) IMS Scratch main of the season and his first Handicap triumph. Local rider Mark Dwyer took the initial lead in the Handicap main from the 20, only to have Pennsylvania's Warren Diem streak by on the back chute. Dwyer, forced high, attempted to get back to the pole bu the had a screaming pack of Faria, Kei th Chrisco, Dubb Ferrell and Gene Woods coming by underneath. Wood and Chrisco then chased Diem with Chrisco evemuaUy getting by Woods on the third circuit. Chrisco went to work on Diem while Faria, coming all the way from the 40, look "Woodsie" for third on lap three. Chrisco gOt next to Diem coming off turn four on the fourth la p and he took the lead as they entered tum one. Faria also took Diem but there appeared to be no chance of catching the "Chrisco Kid." Faria then drastically closed the gap going down the back chute and got a tremendous drive as they came off four on the final circuit. They crossed the line inches apart in a photo finish, bringing the crowd to their feet and roaring as Faria was awarded the win. The Scratch main was relatively easy for Faria (Budweiser/Shoei! Oakley/KaI-GardlSTP/Stephenson' Flowers Wes); he simply led all the way. Ferrell was second off the grid followed by Mike Curoso and Alan Christian. Christian quickly got by Curoso for third only to have Curoso re-pass him for the show spot on lap two. That's the way it ran to the checkered. Don Butler (Dick's Garagel]&M Trophy &Silk Screen/Mike Sullivan Racm~ Associates Weslake) took his Faria, Ott plot Ventura wins By Bill Locey VENTURA,.CA, AUG. 28 Bob Ott achieved nirvana on wheels as he earned his way back to the 50-yard line after coming off the 40-yard line to win the Handicap main by 50 yards at the Commotion by the Ocean. The Handicap main was a promoter's dream - four from the 40 with Andy Northrup behind them, all chasing Lenny BenglSson off the 20. Once Ou cut under Bengtsson on the second lap, it was all over but the shouting, and fans everywhere are learning to do that when Ott's on the track. In Scratch racing, "Flyin' Mike" Faria won number 12 as he took the main without problem or drama. Faria isn't going to break Lance King's track record 16 wins, but still a dozen is nothing to sneeze at. After winning his heat by miles, Faria had to hold off Northrup to take his semi and the main. But guess who the track points leader is after all the regular festivities are over? Wrong. It's Keith "Snakeman" Larsen - all he did was make both mains, again. Warren Reid ended '84 perfect at Ventura as he won his third trophy in as many appearances - this time the D-2 main easily off the zero. Donny Faulkner, going faster than ever, was second. Santa Paula local Jim Bradley smoked 'em in Third Division. Results SC.RATCH MAIN: 1. Mike Faria; 2. An6y Nonh. rup; 3. Brad Oxley: 4. Keith La...n. HAHDICAP MAIN; 1. Bob Ott; 2. Keith Larsen; 3. Spencer FREMONT, CA, AUG. 25 While most of the fat cats were off playing in the national qualifier games down South, the cool kids hung in for rond 17 of 20 Class A speedway races at Baylands Raceway, where once again a great track greeted the riders. The newest of faces in the maddening crowd was J i,:" Sisemore - the former motocrosser bedecked in his new M Be M leathers trying to repeat his first Division One rides from la t week, while "Kid" Curry topped the programs in the feature match race and ran off and hid in the Scratch main. With the skinny Divi ion One program, a three-heat Handicap program was utilized and worked great. Scou e1son hung on despite the white flag to win the first heat with Curry stuck behind Mark Zeissler. Sisemore hung on close to Mark Dragony for second in the second heat, while it was Kevin French way out front on the third heat, and Tom Ferris made it off the forty to win the final heat. In the Handicap Semi's Sisemore got the crowd going with a great win over Curry and Zeissler, while young Todd Varner rode into the main in his first ride at this track leading Ferris and French to the line. Varner got a good shot off the zero and held the line to win the main, while Sisemore kept the crowd on its feet trying to get around. Last week was the first time in the big boy ranks for Sisemore, and he won the Divison One Handicap making many fans happy. Tonight, he won his first-ever scratch heat over the veteran 'Tom Ferris and is fast becorni ng a favori te face around these parts. In the second sem i, Sisemore got around Mark Dragonyand Darrell Anderson and put the crowd on its feet winning and at least their favorite in the main. Curry got the license to steal despite being the last guy to come out for the pick when he pulled the number-one slol. With only one try to break the ribbons, the green went 10 Curry who was colored gone. Ferris tripped in for a good second in the match up mat lasted all night between the two with Sisemore happy to have gotten as far as he did on his Maely. Rocket Rob Damron took his third Div II main on the Damart Special over Perry Sherman, who must have at least a half dozen seconds this year and John Hegarty third. Rick Hicks became another of the new winners taking Div III in good style, while Brian Davis Jr. hung on for second over Glenn Jennings and the rest spread out in various states and positions.
