Mickey Fay won both the Expert trophy dash and main event in the Sidewinders' TT at Clackamas. Oregon. Wigington wings D-37 Sunrise MX By Charleen Ho ADELANTO, CA, AUG. 19 District 37's Sunrise Valley Cycle Park's motocross saw Dane Wigington win top dollars among the Pros, while Mike ." 36 Edmonds placed as top Intermediate. As the Pros and Intermediates went through the first turn it was Jim Hoover (500cc Pro), Jim Sendelback (250cc Pro), Mike Edmonds (25Occ Int), Wigington (5OOcc Pro), Sue Fish (250cc Int) and Eric MacCracken (500cc Pro). As they approached the tabletop, Sendelbach took the lead from oover. Next for excitement was the stadium jumps. Sendelbach, Hoover, Wigington and Edmonds flew through them aggresively. Fish was ha.lfway through them when MacCracken cut into Fish, leaving her sprawled on the ground. Sendelbach maintained his lead on Hoover as Edmonds, MacCracken and Wigington traded places. Before the next lap MacCracken bumped and shoved into second place. Hoover fel1 to MacCracken's assault, dropping to last place. MacCracken broke in the third lap, however, leaving the field to Sendelbach, Wigington, Edmonds, Jeff Capt (l25cc Int) and Tim Hanna (25Occ Int). As the laps passed Sendelbach mastered the course and increased his lead. Wigington dove deeper and deeper into the comers as Edmonds maintained his third. With the checkers came victory for Send~lbach, fol1owed by Wigington, Edmonds, Capt and Hanna. Moto two found Wigington in the lead. Sendelbach was right on his heels as Steve Sailing (125cc Int), Capt and Hoover were side by side. Edmonds, Clark Coleman (5OOcc Pro) and Ron Lewis (500cc Pro) set a distant pace. The show was on the road for the top five. Hoover sped past Capt for fourth then past Sailing for third. History was set as Hoover went for Sendelbach and took second. At the finish it was Wigington, Hoover, Sendelbach, Sailing and Edmonds. Cash payback went to Wigington, Sendelbach and Hoover. Top honors for 125cc Intermediates were awarded to Sailing, 250cc Intermediates to Edmonds and l25cc Pro to Tod Sciacqua. Results BO BEG: 1. Cole Gress: 2. Jeff Ray: 3. Joseph Fine. BO NOV: 1. Fay, Fisher, Freitas fast at Sidewinders By Clay Ught CLACKAMAS, OR, AUG. 17 Mickey Fay flew his Bel-Ray/ MarushinlAnunco ToolslWoodRotax 560 to the Expert main event win at Oregon Sidewinders TT. Oregon's Ryan Fisher did a similar disappearing aa to win the Junior main, as did surprising Californian Winkie Freitas, winner of the Novice main event. Freitas, Jack "Bugsy" Booth (HD), Marty Zirbel (Yam) and James Dunken (Hon) led the Novices down the hil1 after the start of the IO-Iap main event. Freitas used the pole position to cushion himself quite a tidy lead after Booth dropped out on the fifth lap, which moved Zirbel and Randy Roose (Hon) into the hunt. Roose displaced Zirbel to hold on to second as Freitas slipped out of sight from the sensational battle for third between Zirbel, Dunken and Jason Naylor (Hon). Zirbel closed in on Roose but was flat-out denied the runner-up laurels by the tricky Washingtonian. Freitas took the win in only his second appearance at Sidewinders by a huge margin aboard the BlendzalJ/Freitas Bros.lDave Bird! Arila Meat Rotax 500. Roose, Zirbel, Dunken, Naylor and Paul Peiroli (Yam) followed. Washington's Brian McGonigal won the£astest heatrace and sat on the pole on the BBRP/Yam NW/Lillie Rotax and got the jump to lead the 12-lap J uniorfinal. McGonigal's lead didn't last long as Fisher swept past on the Sip-N -Dippity's/Simpson Wood-Rotax and the two went merrilyon their way to putting nearly a half-lap lead on the third-place confrontation between Triumph 750mounted Steve Kendig, Frank Crane Jr. (Hon) and Can-Am-mounted Terry Wahl. Kendig controlled the thirdplace battle quite some distance behind Fisher and McGonigal. Wahl got around Crane for a change in the top five, finishing fourth ahead of Crane and Mike Oglesbee (Hon). Fay's timing was perfect and the Washington resident motored' into the lead and led the Expert main event into turn one and by the time the l2-rider field crested the famous steeplechase hill, Fay had the race all to himself. Green held down second bikelengths away while the battle for third was fast and furious. Charlie "Brett" Barkman (H-D) and John Wincewia (Tri) repeatedly traded paint until Wincewicz (H-D) coasted in to the pi ts to end his night and put Brad Hurst (Tri) and Jeff McDaniel (Rtx) into the top five. Fay was absolutely unstoppable, and Green also rode a blistering pace to hold Barkman, Hurst, McDaniel and Rookie Duane Gerrard (C-A) at bay. Results EX: 1. Mickey Fay (H-D); 2. Randy Green (Han); 3. Green guns down Hannegan Pro-AmFT By Clay Light BELLINGHAM, WA, AUG.]8 Randy Green devoured the competition in the Open Pro class, winning the main going away as well as winning the trophy dash and setting the evening's fast time. Kirk Strong has controlled the 250cc Pro class all season and tonight was no exception. The 250cc Pro class has become nearly extinct due to the Novices riding 500cc four-strokes this year, though many stil1 hang on to their Novice machines of years past as did Strong, riding a water-cooled CR250based flattracker. Strong launched his Honda off the line to lead Canadian champion Steve Aseltine on a similar Honda and the air-cooled Yamahas of Brian McGonigal and Randy Roose. The water-pumpers left the field behind which left McGonigal and Roose to fend for themselves and witness a thrashing in the distance by winner Strong and young Aseltine. Green won his Open Pro heat race, setting fast time en route to the win as well as smoking the trophy dash. Green grabbed the lead in the dash for the brass while Aseltine (H.,.D), Juniors Mike Kearney (750 Yam) and Steve Pruczinski (Yam) followed. Green came right back to lead on the restart of the Open Pro main and for the first of 151aps led Asel tine, McGonigal (Lillie Rtx), Kearney and Strong (500 Hon). Green's N-D/Bel-Ray/ Pro-Fuel lSi m pson/H i-Poin t/Be1lingham H-D/Honda 600 was only a blur as Aseltine motored his way into second on lap two with Strong sliding his way past Aseltine, McGonigal and Kearney to settle into econd while Aseltine faded back farther and pushed McGonigal and Kearney into the top four ahead of a sensational Rick Albee (Yam)/Prusczinski/Roose (Hon)/Murray Newman (Yam) swapfest. Aseltine got a second wind and charged his way past Kearney and McGonigal to settle into third on the 500 Harley. McGonigal did all he could to keep the Canadian star in his sight and attempt to set the same pace that Aseltine was using to close the gap on Strong, which was a task that would be relinquished. Green had little trouble taking the win over Strong, Aseltine, McGonigal, Kearney and Albee. Results OPEN PRO: 1. Randy Green (Han); 2. Kirk Strong (Han); 3. Steve Aseltine (H-D); 4. Dauth, Green thumbs-up at CMC BaylandsMX By Mike Vancil FREMONT, CA, AUG. 15 John Dauth had the evening go all his way at the Wednesday-night Continental Motosports Club-sanctioned Bay lands Raceway motocross. Dauth, riding the 250cc Pro class aboard his privately sponsored Honda 250, was tied on points with Greg Penningtons' Al1 American Honda/Suzuki-sponsored Honda. It took a late secondmoto pass for Dauth to take the victory. Kevin Green had it a little easier in the 500cc class as his chief competitor, John Wells aboard a Grade Way Construction Honda, fell in the second moto and did not recover in time for a serious challenge. Wells had taken the first moto but Green, sponsored by Walnut Creek Honda and Malcolm Smith, was obviously locked into first and rode his Honda all the way to 'the checkers. The 80cc ranks had an invasion, of sorts, by the Leff brothers out of Pinole. Sponsored by Cycle Gear, these two young riders accounted for the 80cc Intermediate win and second in the 80cc Junior class. Obie Leff, the Intermediate, was the rider first out of the start gate ~n both races a':ld seemed never to look back or paDic. His and brother Ian's Yamahas never missed a beat. Ian Neff's problem in getting- a matching first-place trophy came in the form of Ricky Peixoto and his Castro Valley Yamaha. Reixoto did a fine job in moto two to earn the Junior victory and the overall, leaving second for Ian Neff. Results BD NOV: 1. John Fox (Kaw). BD JR: 1. Riclty Peixoto (Yam); 2. Ian Leff (Yam). BD INT: 1. Obie Loft (Yam).
