CR500-based machine into the lead on lap one of the 500cc Expen main. YamamolO was all alone in row one after some initial chaos and put his National number 46-plated Honda into the lead while Tony Cruickshank and Rusty Yamamoto picked their way through traffic to seule into second and third. Only Cruickshank would set his sights on Ron YamamoLO, who is gunning for class champion honors (now held by Cruickshank on the Dick's Suzuki RM500-powered 'tracker) as Cruickshank rallied 10 within a wheel of Yamamoto, who took the win. Yamamoto's double came after a brutal swapfest, once again with Cruickshank. Rich Hayman (Hon) churned his 500 at high speed to settle into third a good distance behind winner Yamamoto, who has been untouchable and remains the kind of the big bore classes on his self sponsored Hondas. Cruickshank gave it all he had but ended up with the shon end of the stick for second. Results OPEN EX: 1. Ron Y.mamoto; 2. Tony Cruid<.hanlt; 3. Rich Hayman. 500 EX: 1. Ron Y.m.moto; 2. I Baylarids' Continental Motosports Club-sanctioned night motocross was higWighted by the return to action of Tony 40 Flores. The personable young flash has been sidelined for several weeks awaiting delivery of his new Yamaha which has the backing of MOIO-X Fox, Palo Ailo Yamaha and Yamaha Motor Corporation. Competition for second place in the 125cc Pro class was heavy as Flores vacated the pack seconds after the gate dropped. He left all the battling for runner-up honors between Danny Boles (Hon) and Baylands' regular Craig Christian (Yam). Christian was finally able 10 get by Boles for a place at the payout window but it took several laps each molO. Two-fifty action was practically a carbon copy of the 125cc Pro race with johnny Gardner doing the upfront disappearing act and the ballle between john Dauth (Hon) and Christian on his second bike. Christian came from way back in molO two to nip Dauth for the second overall, looking really on-form again. Gardner pleased sponsors Moto-X Fox, ProtoPipe, Scott USA and Honda Peninsula with his fifth straight victory here. Kevin Green (Hon), sponsored by Malcolm Smith Products and Walnut Creek Honda, was clearly the dominant force in the big-bore Pro class and was never threatened during his two victory-producing performances. First-time 80cc Novice racer Shawn Robenson left his mark at Baylands in grand fashion. I?-obenson came armed wtih two sponsors for his Yamaha, Lazy M Ranch and Chaney Airways, and he also brought a 10person cheering section. Robertson got the holeshot, led for five turns and three straightaways before going over the handlebars head first! All before he was able to complete a half lap. But, the tough lillIe guy came back in moto two, and kept on his wheels fora founh-plac~finish. Christopher McCallie (Ted Slicart Yam) put away the competition in this class to Lake the overall. Head dropped only four points all day to top the runner-up in the Masters class, fellow Montesa pilot Kipp Webb. The contest was not exactly close; Webb had 33, 13 beuer than thatof the third placer, Kevin Nonon from southern California. Trial master Sky Archuleta and crew laid out a 10-section loop that was ridden three times and featured lots of variety, as well as the famous Donner granite. A few of the Experts questioned the sanity of a pair of drop-offs in sections five and nine, otherwise there were few complaints. The only sanity that really needed questioning was that of Expen class winner Howard Galbreath, who rode the entire trial - drop-offs and all -with no rear brake. Galbreath finished with 31 points, having to rely solely on his front brake and compression release after his rear brake was destroyed when a sprocket boll loosened. Back after a two-year retirement, southern CaJifornia's Paul Webster took second with 42. john Tewes led a closely contested Amateur class with 60 points, two fewer than were tallied by Ken Nickerson and four fewer than Art Webster. Hilary Muskatell grabbed his second Novice A win of the series with a healthy 17-point margin over Randy Dolenes. The finishing order in the Senior A class was also the same as the previous round. However, the two events bore little resemblence as Ken Maracek's margi n of victory grew from one point 10 15 over Steve Muskatell. The Novice B finishing ladder was quite close with john Myler (34) winning over Dane Nickerson (38) and Steve Siler (39). In the Senior B class Dick Hamar took a repeat win over Bob Sorenson. Melvin on again at Hannegan MX By Paul Nielsen BELLINGHAM, WA, AUG. 2 By winning the l25cc A class, Yamaha rider Brent Melvin took the lead in the Hannegan MX high point standings. With five races left Melvin holds a five-point lead over Mark Cunningham. In the single-moto race, Kawasakimounted Bob N ietfield took the holeshot over Rodney Casper and Melvin. On lap three Casper passed Nietfield and set off at a vicious pace. Two laps later Melvin got past Nietfield, and he turned on afterburners in pursuit of Casper. However, on the seventh lap, Casper slowed and Melvin took the lead. Casper soon headed for the pits and left the order behind Melvin at NieLfield and Kevin Zilkey. Honda rider Terry Sabat took an early lead in the 250cc A class and was never headed. Melvin, riding another Yamaha, ran second with Rodney Solberg third. Tom Moen, riding a borrowed KDX200, was fourth and pressing. By lap eight Sabat had an eightsecond lead on Melvin, while the action was hot behind him. Fifthplace Trevor Yuras (Hon) had moved up to join the ballle for third between Moen and Solberg, with Moen having passed Solberg on lap six. Melvin seized and dropped out of the race later that same lap, handing second to Moen. The hard-charging Yuras moved into third, only to crash out of contemion. Honda rider Mike Fletcher came out of the pack to occupy third for a while, but he crashed on the last lap and gave it back to Solberg. Results OPEN A: 1. Brian Doyle (Hon); 2. Dsn Krough (Hon). Knupp up for SRAC victory By Larry Johnson COLORADO SPRINGS, CO, JULY 29 Mike Knupp, who came out to race today in preparation- for the upcoming AMA Nationals, received very little challenge as he cruised 10 two easy victories in the Open Pros. Terry Kyle put together a 3-2 day for second overall, while Chris Sundstrom finished third with a 2-4 posting. Alben Firestine did precisely what he needed to do 10 win the 250cc Pro class. He buill a substantial lead early in mOlOone, but Randy Warren closed and passed him by midpoint Firestine regained the lead on the next circuit and held it 10 the checkers. Mau Lindsey, riding in his first-ever 250cc race, followed Warren across the finish line for third. Firestine maintained a small lead over Lindsey and Warren in molO two. While he paved the way, Lindsey and Warren were trading positions until Warren's bike developed mechanical problems, forcing him 10 drop well off the pace. With Warren
