America's oldest established hillc1jmb drew upwards of SOOO spectators and 150 entries despite rainy weather throughout the day. World class riders from six states and Canada were competing for a $6000 purse. The500cccla s got underway fir t. with Peterson setting the time 10 beat on his American HondalNippondenso/TsubakilHi-Point/Too-Tech/ Uni-Filter/Richter/KR W-backed CRSOO. The difficulty of this year's hill was quiteevident as Peterson and Doug Beer, Canada's lOp-ranked entTy, were the only two 500 riders to clear the top. Peterson's 11.983 was good for the win and Beer's Lethbridge Kawasaki filled the second-place slot with a 13.09 roost over the top. Open class machinery took to the hill next with less success; only Canada's Ken Long managed a successful climb LO the LOp in 17.60 seconds. Jerry Richter's 170-foot ride gave him second-place money. Midday entertainment was provided in full force with 33 Unlimited bikes being run two rounds back LO back before the State Championship. Peterson provided the crowd with the most dramatic ride of the day in this class, a the throttle stuck on his nitro-burning 200-bhp Harley during the first run. After a bullet-quick ride through the bottom and middle section of the hill he finally brought the bike out of its wide-open mode and stopped it just short of the crest. A quick repair of the throttle linkage brought him back for his second attempt, in which he blasted the hill in 10.SO seconds to claim top honors. Steve Stith came through with a 12.85 hill-topping ride for second and Montana's Dave Svenvold took third. Advanced class competition for the State Title had the twelve top riders of the event that transfered out of their respective classes go back for two rounds of additional climbing 10 determine the 1984 champion. Peterson, as in the other classes, set the pace LO beat, with a clean 14.17 jet over the top on his Honda. When the two rounds were complete it was still Peterson holding fast time, and claiming his third state title, with Doug Beer, Doug Sherburn and Steve Stith turning in great rides to fill out the top four. Answer Products Honda rider Mike Watson topped tl!e 250cc Pro class as the California Racing Club hosted motocross under the lights at Indian Dunes. Watson was challenged from one end of the track to the other by Suzuki pilot Dave Welty, but emerged victorious_ In other Pro action, Yamahamounted Jack Greenberg took backLO-back wins in the 125cc ranks for sponsors Kal-Gard and Van Nuys Cycle. The80cc Stock Be~inners provided quite a bit of excitement. Will Donald took the early le'1d in the first moto, followed by Kim Hoagland, Derek Meyer and Curt Crosby. In the ensuing laps Crosby advanced to take the lead and went on to take the moLO over Hoagland. Donald and Meyer dropped back, and Matt Alexander recorded the third-place finish. In the second moLO Hoagland turned in the best gate, and then led to the flag in spite of Donald's best ef(orts. Andy Payne advanced from seventh in moLO one'in third in the second round. Donald was off the leaderboard in moLO two, but still finished third overall behind Hoagland and Donald. Results PEE WEE NOV: 1. Robby Hemmond (Vern); 2. Kyle Frailer (Yam); 3. Travis Preston (Yam).
