Gardner mows 'em down at Santa Clara By Stoney Ryan SANTA CLARA, CA, JULY 20 In its fifth week of Friday night Zap Promotions motocross racing, the Santa Clara Police Athletic League track saw Pe- 32 Chris Milchell. Cahors smoked the firsl round of lhe Open Pros, bUl in the second round he was lrapped allhe bolLOm of a lurn-one pile-up and losl lOO much lime lO make up. Danny Boles. who is back and now gelling help from former Canadian champ Danny Turner, and after finishing second in lhe firsl moLO, won the second for the overall. SCOll Fendorf look second wilh a 4-3 count and Mark Nelson was lhird with a 5-4. ninsula Honda and MOlo-X-Fox rider "Johnny G" Gardner sweep the 250cc Pro class; laking one the hard way and one wilh sly Ie. Slarling mid-pack in the firsl mOlO behind Chris Milchell's Honda, Ya.maha pilot Craig Chrislian and Tony Richards' Kawasaki, "Johnny G'" pushed his CR hard, gaining ground on the leaders lap by lap. By the sixlh lap, il was Milchell and Gardner wheel lO wheel - Gardner pushing hard, Milchelltrying LO hold on. One lap laler "Johnny G" look the lead and never looked back. In the second moLO, il was Gardner racing fasl and smooth from holesholLO finish. Milchell look second overall, followed by Chrislian. By lhe fourth lap it wa a lighl ballle for lhe from posiLions belween leve Nauman on a Honda, Bin Avery' Kawasaki and Peslana's Honda. Thal's how lhey were 'auman, Avery, Peslana - when the three racers squeezed imo a hairpin lurn at lhe back of the lrack. BUl by the lime lhey cleared the corner, Avery was down and Peslana had jumped OUl ahead of Nauman for the lead and held on lO lhe finish. In the second moLO, illOOk PeSlana even laps lO overtake lhe leader Nauman, who finished second overall ahead of Avery. The largesl class of the night was lhe mini bikers, wilh nearly 40 emries inc1 uding 6-year-old Pee Wee Chrisly MaSlerson. Lillie Chrisly pulled up lhe rear on a Yamaha 50, her long ponylail bouncing wilh every bump and jump on the track. Sierra/Answer Products/Yamaha Support rider Jim Ellis made the long haul from Fresno to Sacramento Raceway Park a worthwhile vemure by scoring lWO moLO wins in the 250cc Pro class ahead of Hi-Point/Honda of Sacramento-supported Jo Jo Wrighl at the Friday nighlsladium MX races in the MOlobowl. Ellis came from behind in the operring round lO score firsl in from of up-and-coming fast guy Wright_ Then Ellis mOlored lO the win in mOlO lWO as Wright held off Jimmy "Kamakazi" Robertson for second and second overall. Robertson (4-3) and Allen "Bad Boy" Berduli (3-4) finished the evening third and fourth overall, respeclively. Kawasaki-moumed Shawn Freiling downed Yarna-rooster Darryl Haney both Limes OUl for the I25cc Inlermediale win. Honda-mounted Troy Muse finished third on a 3-3 tally. R. Spencer MO TEREY, CA, JULY 15 Jon Nelson and Dean Matson traded moto wins and runnerup placings in this Continental Motosports Club-sanctioned moLOcro ,wilh Nelson triumphant by virtue of his win in the deciding second mOlO. In alternaling the moLO wins lhe lWO riders lurned in some very good racing. Theo Bernhard lUrned in a pair of lhirds for the same Spol allhe payoff window, ahead of Dennis Hannel and Jeff Pestana. In the 250cc Pro class Jeff WallS relurned LO compelilion after a lhreeyear layoff and had a ballle royale wilh Brell Cahors, who was riding a borrowed machine.
