I • I Baker, Cook fake Interstate bread By TIm Tolleson OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, JULY 18 Chan Baker and Scott Cook fed the Experts some sand as they traded notes on how to make a Honda CR500 fly. In the best Expert action in recent memory the two traded hard-fought 1-2 finishes with Baker emerging with the winning combination. Cook grabbed the holeshot in moLO one'over Honda-mounted Alvin Myers and Kawasaki rider jim Cone, while Baker was mired in the pack. Cook tried to build a cushion on the Myers/ Cone battle, and Baker moved up to fourth by the end of lap two. For the next two laps, the battle was a four· way affair, with Cook holding off Myers, who was under intense pressure from Cone and Baker. By the fifth lap, Cook had managed to gain a second on the Myers/Cone/Baker freight train. Myers bobbled on lap six and both Cone and Baker capitalized on the mistake. By the time Baker dispatched Cone, Cook was LOO far out front for him to reel in. The moto ended with Cook in front, over Baker, Cone and Myers. Baker gathered the holeshot in the second moLO over Cook, Cone and Myers. Cone crashed hard and remounted in last as Cook latched onto Baker. The two Honda aces left tbe pack behind as they battled for advantage. The duel was dead-even LO the end, as Baker countered every move Cook tried. Myers finished third for third overall, and Baker took the overall on the tie breaker. In amateur action, "Marvelous" Marvin Cox roosted his CR480/S00 hybrid to I-I finishes in the Open Combined class. In the (irst moLO, Suzuki pilot Tim Eubanks got the holeshot over Cox and Honda-mounted Luther Lowman. Cox quickly displaced Eubanks and steadily pulled away. Lowman crashed and Mike Morris LOok over third on his YZ490. The moLO ended with Cox winning over Eubanks, Morris and Lowman. In moLO two Cox had LO work his way through tbe pack after suIfering a mid-pa k tart. Lowman and Eubanks fought (or the lead while Cox reeled them in. By the (ourtb lap Cox . had slipped into second behind a surprised Lowman. Cox set him up, then got a beller drive of( the fourth jump to literally sail past Lowman for the lead.
