the field as he took his Honda to a (-I
overall victory.
In the first moto, Randy Law took
the early lead, followed by Sam ava
Jr., and Bin Avery. Gardner moved
up from back in the pack, passing the
front runners one every two laps, to
take over the point position, which
he held to the finish.
In the second go- 'round, Law once
again had the lead. Avery, Nava, and
Craig Christian ran second through
fourth, until Christian experienced
rear wheel problems and dropped off
the pace. Law looked secure in the
lead until Gardner shot by ava and
Avery on a short traight. Then ava
pulled out with a foot injury which
he sustained in moto one.
Law continued to lose ground to
Gardner then on the last lap, over the
last jump, Gardner tried a desperation pass for the lead. The duo tangled
and went down. Gardner was able to
get up, restart, and finish ahead of
Avery to gain the overall victory.

Park acing-out Kawasaki-mounted
Greg Zitterkop£.
Zi tterkopf holeshot the first moto
and was pursued closely by Craig
Cable, Peterson and Ron Turner. In
the second lap of the five-lap heat,
Peterson passed Cable to take over
second. In the next lap, he got by
Zitterkopf in the same spot: the palm
tree turns before theTT jump. Pete, rson retained the lead, despite the
efforts of a hard-charging Ziuerkopf,
and took the win. Turner finished
third.
In the second moto Peterson led 0((
the start and was never headed, winning easily.
Peterson then concentrated on the
500cc Pro class. He batted with Pete
Murray and Rick Atkins in moto one,
after Murray led off the gate. But in
the third lap, Atkins crashed out of
contention, leaving Murray and Peterson dicing it out. In the last lap,
Peterson took the lead for good and
held it to the checkers. After a racelong duel for third between Dave
Foltz and Ziuerkopf, Mike McMillen
lost a real-estate battle and crashed
spectacularly over the cement retaining wall. He limped away under his
own power.
Peterson led the start of the second
moto and finished out in front by a
comfortable margin over the dogfight
between Murray and Ziuerkopf for
second. Murray came out ahead to
take second-place honors.
