'/4 .. f> Ed"'" \Z06\ "17' .Z" By Mike Gillies SUNNYMEAD, CA, JULY I Ron "Lackadaisical" Lawson handily won the 250cc Intermediate class today at DeAnza Cycle Park. Lawson, riding a Suzuki, suffered midpack starts in both moLOS but didn't have a very difficult time passing Tom Thomsen, Mike Fitzgerald and Larry Benedict for a double·moLO win. By the half~ay point of both moLOS, Lawson claimed the leads and was never pressured to the checkered. Team Tamm-sponsored Fitzgerald (Han) smoked everyone LO the first turn in the first mota, but Benedict (Han/Scott USA) was soon pressuring Fitzgetald and snuck by towards the end of the first lap. Lawson was fifth off the line behind Malcolm Smith's Thomsen (Yam) and Suzuki-mounted Doug Davison, but Lawson came around in second on lap two and started reeling in Benedict. Davison, riding an '82 Suzook, was on the gas and holding a strong third behind the Benedict/Lawson duel. Lawson took the lead from Benedict on lap four and had only LO concentrate on staying up to win the mota. Benedict faded a bit after his battle with Lawson, dropping to fourth behind Thomsen by the checkered flag. Lawson cruised through the checkers first, while Davison rode to a strong second. In round two, Fitzgerald won the horsepower contest with Benedict, Thomsen, Lawson, and Cycle Works' Johnny Bonacci on a borrowed RM250 in LOW. At the end of lap one, it was Benedict and Lawson out in front, while Thomsen held on to Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald started having mechanical troubles on the third lap and decided to cruise the rest of the maLO in order to finish. Lawson found a line around Benedict at the halfway point and started pulling a comfortable lead. Thomsen saw Benedict about 15 seconds ahead imd started an all-out effort to reel him in. Benedict gave in to Thomsen on lap 10 and didn't have the energy to do anything about it, so the order at the checkers was Lawson, Thomsen, Benedict, Davison and MXR's Michael TarkingLOn (Kaw) nailing down fifth. Lawson's I-I tally earned him first over Thomsen's 3-2, while Davison's 2-4 edged out Benedict's 43 for third. Results PEE WEES: 1. Troy Haling (Vern); 2. Nathan Fowler (Yam); 3. Kevin Smith (Yaml.
