Coombs LAKE WHITNEY, TX, JUNE ·23-24 One hundred and twenty of Stock Texas' toughest riders pitted their skill and luck against one another and 101 a scorching heat at Lake Whitney's Cycle Ranch. The Lake Whitney Regional was the second leg of a two- pan qualifying series en route to the AMA Loretta Lvnn Amateur National Championships to be held in August. Billy Whitley started things off by topping the I25cc A class. Kawasaki-mounted Whitley took control of the I25cc A Stock class from gate lO finish in moto one, leaving fellow Kawasak; riders Carroll Richardson and Kit Vick to battle for runner-up positions. Whitley's second·moto viclOry wa an uphill climb £rom the start. First he had to overcome Vick's holeshot, only lo be hard charged by Richardson for the remainder of the race. Even back-ofthe-pack action was tight, with Ja on OtlO and Donald Hudson locking horns throughout all three motos. With Whitley's opting out of moto three, Vick and Richardson were left to do battle for second overall, with Vick the victor. All that was seen of 15-year-old Eddie Vreeland was a red streak, as he swept through moto one of the I25cc B Stock class. But the victory laurels went to Chad Parker, when he dominated motots two and three of the I25cc B Stock and captured the overall title in the I25cc B Modified class as well. Parker's Stock class victories 'were not easily won, however. Vreehind was never more than a few bikelengths behind. Moto three ended in a final tum jam between Vreeland and Parker, with Vreeland surrendering both the race and the overall. Consistency played the leading role in Steven Hill's third overall finish ahead of Tommy Collier. Hill chalked up two third-place finishes behind Vreeland and Collier in mota one and Parker and Vreeland in moto two. Although tied in points, it was Hill's third-place finish in the final moto that gave him the edge over' Collier. The 125cc B Modified class was filled with many of the amda esand tough racing as the 125cc B Stock. Tommy Collier got his taste of victory by dominating the entire first mota. But back in the pack. Parker would not settle for hi-s sixth-place position. He charged hard, pulling in Brett Wagnon, l4-year-old Shane LeBlanc and Steven Hiii-, for a second in moLO one.' Parker gave up his seond-moto lead to Brian Emig halfway through the races, settling Jar fourth instead. But Parker came back full speed ahead in moto three to chalk up another win and the overall in the 125cc B modified. In the 250ccA Modified, Mike Bray stacked up two first-place finishes to Jerry LeBlanc's two seconds for the overall. Bray's early lead in maLO one was soon stripped away by Doug Fellers. In moto two it was 'LeBlanc who led the pack at the beginning but Bray, who led when it counted - at the end. In molO three, Bray started in first and ended it that way. The 250cc B Modified class was also composed of a series of back and forth agains, with Stephen Lee taking the earJy lead in lap one, only to quickly lose it to Mark Cochran. Stephen Lee made up for his short-lived victory in moto one by taking it back from Cochran in moto two. But Cochran's final mota win clinched the win ' for him. Results OPEN A: ,. Edwards, Storbeck win "high intensity" MX racing at Rio Bravo By Peter Gunderson HOUSTO ,TX,.TU E 16 &: 17 The fifth round of qualifying for the NMA finals at Ponca City was m uc;:h like the weather felt here at Rio Bravo - high intensity. Colen Edwards the multiNational Champion was back in full form after his recent broken arm; winning the 6lcc SLOck. 9-1 I class. Jeff Dement, Dave Shade, Dale Storbeck and Eddie Vreeland all were able to maneuver their way into two class wins. Colen Edwards, who along with Michael Walling, look in prime shape for Ponca City when the two pulled away from the rest of the pack throughout the first moLO. Walling had the lead until he made the mistake of pulling off the track during the white flag. Edwards then cruised on LO an easy win with Walling getting back in time for second ahead of Cary Grant. The second maLO wasn't as close: Edwards stole the holeshOland pulled LO a 10 second lead ahead of Walling and Grant. Walling was able to cut the time down LO seven seconds at the finish but had LO settle for second overall ahead of Grant. Storbeck has taken quite a liking lo the new Kawasaki, as he went on to win the 83cc Modified Expert and 105cc class. Storbeck took a firstmalO holeshot ahead of Scott Chesser and Jason Langford. While Chesser and Langford were battling for second, Storbeck developed a three second lead. Langford finally made a move by Chesser on lap three and was gaining on Storbeck. Langford tried to complete the molO by passing Storbeck but Storbeck finished a few bikelengths ahead of Langford. Chesser finished in third. Storbeck powered his bike to the lead of the second maLO with Chesser right behind. Chesser was able to get by Storbeck when Storbeck slid off the track at the start of the maLO. From then on it was a dog fight for the lead between the two. Their dice was so strong that no more than four bikelengths were ever between them. Storbeck pulled up beside Chesser a few times, but always got squeezed out by Chesser. Coming out of the last turn LOwards the last jump, Storbeck made one last banzai try, but ended up a half bikelength short. Langford worked his way up to nine seconds behind the leaders for third overall with a 2-3. Storbeck captured the overall with a 1-2 against Chesser's 3-1. Results 61 sTK PEE WEE: 1. Jeff Demenl; 2.
