The elder Yamamoto, Ron, put his Honda-powered CR500 into a wicked holeshot and did his usual disappearing act in the 500cc Experts money race. AMA Expert Arney Wick (Hon) stayed glued to Yamamoto, as the duo rode ·in a close 1-2 configuration in the draft. Wick rode in second for the duration, leaving Yamamoto with another in a series of 500cc wins. Third went to Honda rider JeHrey Seldon. Results OPEN EX: 1. Ron Yamamoto; 2. Tony Cruickshank; 3. Palang wins by inches at Sears By Roger Smith SONOMA, CA, JULY 1 Joseph Palang overcar:ne 100°· plus heat to steal the AFM 450cc Modified Production win at Sears Point from Steven Hipp, by inches. At the start, it was Joseph Cannon who charged into the lead; followed closely by Hipp. Palang rocketed out of the fourth row and entered the first turn three abreast with Michael Morrow and John Kirk. By the end of the first lap, Hipp had found his way past Cannon and had pulled away from the field, four seconds in front of second placePalang. The battle for third was a five way contest, with Blaine Ida and Tim Kelly, on the lone Hawk amid the RDs, joining the fracas. Hipp lengthened his lead on the pack, but Palang kept up with him and started slowly closing. After severallaps the third place battle sorted itself out. Kelly had a slight lead over Ida, but three other rider kept the pressure on. Palang caught up to Hipp and after repeated attempts got past him while passing a backmarker. Hipp quickly regained the lead and had to fight off Pa.]ang through the last lap. Palang tried, without success, to find his way past Hipp. The race was decided in a diagrace to the finish line, and Palang won, by less than half a wheellength. The third place battle was also decided in the dash to the finish line, with Ida outrunning Kelly. The 750cc Superstreet riders had to do a tapdance while they waited on the grid for the Open Superstreet riders in the first wave to pull away the track was too hot to stand anI But that didn't seem to bother Bernd Koegler on his Walnut Creek Honda, Kenneth Evan, nor Don Biava as they charged into the lead when the green £lag finally did drop. They set a blistering pace and had the lead to themselves until Evan's bike started to fail in the second lap. He pitted and Doug' Filangeri moved up into the second place slot. Koegler held a slight lead, bu t the three riders formed a tight freight train' that was passing Open class riders by the third la p. The freight train, and the order, held until the last lap when Filangeri slipped inside Koegler in the last turn to take the win by a single bikelength. Biava took third.
