DeAnza double .toBreker By Mike Gillies SUNNYMEAD, CA, JULY 8 Kawasaki Motors' Goat Breker visited DeAnza Cycle Park today and walked away with the 125 and 250cc Pro purses without McLain masters CoronaMX By Nate Rauba CORONA, CA, JULY6 Kawasaki-mounted Mike McLain rode to the victory in the 125cc Intermediate class at the Sunwest Yamaha-sponsored 32~ two-for-one "buddy night" at Corona Raceway. McLain quickly shot into the lead of moto one as Murray Shackelford (Cagiva America), TT Racing's Tim Toms (Kaw) and Keith Morabito (Sunwest Yamaha) followed. Morabito went by Toms on the first lap through the stadium whoops, but he was passed by Jeff "Wafer" Schaeffer (Hon) shortly afterwards. After a lap Shackelford was close and challenging McLain fOr tlle;l¢ad l'Ihile Schal':f", fer also kept close by in third. Near the end of the second lap, McLain overshot a turn and went down. Shackelford sped into the lead only to almost lose it moments later when he nearly crashed on the far side of a table-top jump. A quick dab kept him upright and ahead of Schaeffer. By this time McLain had worked up to fourth and was looking to get by Morabito, which he did before the white £lag appeared. Schaeffer had closed to within striking distance of Shackelford but couldn't find a way by before the checkers £lew. Any chances for Shackelford to repeat a win in the second moto disappeared as the pack sped off the l'ine while he tried to get his Cagiva started. He finally did as Schaeffer led everyone else through the whoops. McLain quickly moved to second and kept the pressure on until he got by. But Schaeffer wasn't about to settle for,se€ond again and,was back inc too much trouble. .Breker started the day on his production 125 behind an unknown Open Suzuki rider and KSI's Dan Paulson (Han). Paulson, ?lso on an Open bike, surrendered second with little protest, but the unlisted Suzuki rider actually held the lead through the first lap. Sunwest's Mark Lopera (Yam) was the second 125 and was busy roosting Fox's Mark Denning (Kaw). Breker cruised to an easy victory, with Lopera, Denning, and Rincon's Lance Gorton (Kaw) trailing. In round two, Breker pulled the same incredible lead and rode w another incredibly easy vicwry. Lopera held onto second for second overall, while Race Tech's Paul Thede (Suz) beat Denning w the checkers, but was fifth overall because of a DNF in the first mota. In the 250cc class, Breker brought out his works Kawasaki which sounded and accelerated more like an Open bike than a 250. Hi-Paint's Tommy Combs (Yam) worked his way to second from last place in both motos to clinch second overall over Team Beef's Gary Lattimer (Kaw). Eddie Michetti crashed out of both motos on his brother's Honda while trying w catch preker. Michetti ended up fourth. In the Senior Vets class, Suzuki Country's Mike Norris and Yamaha of Redland's Ron Brehm traded mota wins, with Norris clinching the allimportant second moto and the overall win. Suzuki-mounted Ed Michetti went 3-3 for third over Larry Lowen (Suz). Results PEE WEE: 1. Troy Holing (Yoml; 2. Tyler King (y"",k 3.,Mic"""kAaplin'(Y"'~ " I J , " " DIV II: 1. Jon Pauls (Vam). Watilo topped both 125cc Pro motos while Keller's Honda Support ride did the same in the 250cc Pro division. Watilo got the handle on the first l25cc Pro/Intermediate contest while fellow Pro Jere Meeker (Cag) gave the Salem speedster chase. A hoarde of Intermediates pounded their mounts behind the Pro duo, which consisted of front runners Paul Wiim (Kaw), ,Clarence Gardner (Yam) and David Livingswn (Yam). Winn, aboard a 100cc KX80 did a ,superb job of putting away the 125cc Intermediates after early leader Gardner's' demise. Gary Beyer (Kaw), Livingston and Jody Jamieson (Kaw) took top spots behind Watilo, who breezed to an easy win over Meeker. Moto twO saw Meeker sneak into the lead by stuffing a wheel in front of Watilo. Winn, Mark Slipp (Yam) and Beyer followed the Pros but couldn't stay close this mota, letting Meeker and Watilo blaze a path to the checkered flag. Watilo got around Meeker early in the long mow and took the big win. Meeker rode exceptionally well w nab second ahead of Beyer, who got the nod for the Intermediate overall by beating an on-themove Winn, who got off the line poorly and crashed. Winn worked to second aboard the smallest machine on the track to reverse scores. Livingston took third. Keller and Meeker (Cag) motored on the huge pack of Intermediate riders to steal the show in the first of two, 250cc Pro/Intermediate motos. Keller, at 17, is already a veteran of AMA Nationals and put the pack to his mercy on the Honda Support/Moto-X Fox CR250. Gardner (Yam) rode well enough w bag the Intermediate moto win over last race's winner Kelly Whelchel (Kaw), Ron Hall (Hon) and Kelly Vinson (Hon). The second outing l1ad Keller escape all contact and £lee Meeker. Gardner, Dave Fox (Suz) and Whelchel were in hot pursuit and kept the Pros in sight until the halfway point when Kel)er put the throttle to its stop and went all the way to home base for the win and a double-mow demolition, beating Meeker's 2-2 tally for second. Keller was the big money winner of the day. Gardner took the Intermediate laurels, also going 1-I, to beat Fox, .who DNF mow one. Results 250 JR: 1. Alan Rogers (Yam~ 2. J.D. Amens (Vaml; 3.
