A week ago, NESRA's Scott Moon said, "Ben Beste is going to let me ride his Interceptor in 750cc Production. The tires are new and the motor's fresh. I'm gonna try to beat Skiver." But minutes before today's 750cc Production final, Moon confided, ") seriously doubt today's the day. Skiver's riding like an animal! Did you see lhe last lap move he made on Marinacci and Wiley to win lhe Superbike heat?" Skiver went on to win lhe Production class, ahead of Moon and Mike Correll. Skiver's VF750F had the pole in the Superbike final, but Chuck Wiley's Bellevue Suzuki took an early lead over Pat Marinacci's Honda 750F. Ski ver moved into second place on lap four, but Marinacci grabbed it right back. On lap six, Skiver took the lead, as Wiley began to fade. Marinacci made a last-lap effort to pass Skiver, but trailed by a length as Skiver took the win. Skiver used a 500cc "Miniceptor" to go head-to-head with Renton Suzu- . ki's joe David in 600cc Production and Cafe classes. In the end, Skiver beat Davis in both races, with Ken Wimer getting third in Cafe, and Ben Booth taking the show spot in Production. Results Dave Cotler (Hon) held down lhe top three spots until Michlitsch breezed through traHic into second. Michlitsch caught and passed Christian for the lead and went on to another I-I tally. Eaton finished seventh, fourth overall. Christian took runner-up, going 3-2 over Han (4-3). Results OPEN PRO: 1. Tim Michlitsch (y.m); 2. John Christi.n Jr. (Hon); 3. Greyion H.rt (y.m); 4. JUNE 30 Hills Ferry and D-36 short trackers met again for a summer night of action under the lights. Mike Inderbiuen was the man :8 to beat in the 500cc Expert outing, as he prepares himself for lhe Camel Pro Series. Winkie Freitas was the fastest in the 250cc Expert show and almost topped the 500s,. but mechanical problems in the big-bore race slowed Freitas down. Freitas borrowed a Fran Upholstory's Bob Codd-special and topped the 250cc Expert race in a thrilling battle. Mike Macedo put up a stiff challenge but wound up short with second; neverlheless, it was one of his best rides of his young Expert career, riding a Knight-f{amed Yamaha. Craig Scroggins finished a close third ahead of Aaron Hill, who pressured the leaders in the early goings but faded, Brian McDowell and Vance Felicio. Freitas looked to be the winner in the 500cc Expert class, but he slowed considerably halfway through the race in lhe lhird turn. It looked as though his motor seized, but it turned out to be a destroyed wheel bearing. "Everything seemed fine until the rear wheel acted like it was hanging up. Then things got a little nervous," said Freitas. This gave the lead 10 Inderbiuen who motored on to take the win. Hill took second over Tavis and Freitas. Results 60 NOV: 1. Ernie Martin (Vam); 2. Skiver takes six at Seattle RR By Bruce Scholten KENT, WA, JUNE 24 The consensus in the pits is that Randy Skiver is riding even harder than usual. The Wheels port/Bassani/N orris Cams/KISW Radio/Totem Lake Honda-sponsored Interceptor pilot was unbeatable today, as he ended the day with a D-27 record of six class wins. It's worth mentioning that in April, Skiver broke his shoulder while winning a motocross series. Then, just six weeks ago, the same shou Idet had to be rebroken and reset. Through most of the morning qualifying heats, Skiver cruised around, sometimes finishing mid-pack. That's because, mounted to the right side of his helmet was a six-pound video camera, balanced by an equal amount of lead on the left side. Mini Beginners 'invade AME's Summer Sizzler at the Dunes By Tom Griff~th VALENCIA, CA, JUNE 29 Summer Sizzler '84 lived up to its name tonight as American Motocross Enterprises hosted the fourth round in the II th annual Budweiser Summer Series of night motocross at Indian Dunes International track. Becoming a regular habit, the largest field of lhe night was posted by tomorrow's stars; the Mini Beginner riders. As lhe gate dropped for the first moto of the Mini Beginner class, Brian Gipson, riding a Yamaha emerged in lhe lead. Gipson is on a trek lately and tonight he continued his string of top five finishes with a solid wire-to-wire in the first moto. But, nearly haH the field kept close watch and paced themselves should Brian falter. Andy Payne shadowed Gipson the entire race, while having to contend with Kenny Manning's Yamaha and Reza Rasai's Yamaha. Breaking the yellow string, firth-place Steve Franco brought his Kawasaki from a mid-field start into fifth at the checkers. Moto two again saw Gipson dart into the early lead and motor away from the field with- another firstplace finish. Duane Benner took his sixth-place first-moto finish, and a fourth in lhe second KO to collect firth-place overall as a result. His riding mate Bryan Randinsky kept in the hunt both mOlDS but finished back in the field. Steve Franco found himseH in second; taking his 5-2 tally to.secol)d overall just ahead of charging Andy Payne, who reversed his positions to a 2-5, seven-point, lhirdplace overall. Rounding out lhe tropby presentations was Curt Crosby on Yamaha going 7-3 and taking fourlh-place brass. Results PEE WEE JR: 1. Shey DeJong (Y.m); 2. P.blo lira (Y.m); 3. Phil Hudson (y.ml. CO, JULY I Randy Warren moved back to within one point of Albert Firestine in the' 250cc Pro State Championship race by winning both motos today. Firestine built a big lead in lhe first go-'round before Warren closed it up in lhe late going. Firestine crashed on the last lap allowing Warren to go by for the win. Firestine led out of the gate again in motor two but Warren took over by mid-point. Darren DeLoach also had a perfect I-I day in the 80cc Expert class. In moto one he gated second behind Derek Brown, but by lap two jay Rutherbories had passed both for lhe lead. On lap four Andy Atkins joined Rutherbories in a dice for the lead ahead of Brown and DeLoach. One lap later Brown moved up to first, and DeLoach regained second_ The last lap was a side-by-side duel as lhe lead changed hands four times before DeLoach finally prevailed over Brown. Atkins came in third ahead of Rulherbories. Moto two quickly developed into another dice between these two with Atkins lurking in third. Brown got the holeshot and led until lap three when DeLoach went by. DeLoa.ch wrecked on lhe next circuit and remounted just ahead of Atkins and five seconds behind Brown. Within two laps DeLoach and Atkins were right on Brown's rear fender; and on the last lap DeLoach berserked it by Brown and Atkins did the same several turns later. Atkins' 3-2 earned him second overall ahead of Brown's 2-3 tally. Stacey Cook had to work for his victory in the 125cc Pros. Moto one was a 10-lap fray between jim Mitchell. Art DeHoff and Matt Lindsey - the eventual finishing order. Cook was busy threading his way to a distant fourlh after gating 18th. A big pile-up on the jump after the first tum took DeHoff out of contention
