Campbelltriples at Sunny Valley IT By Clay Light SUNNY VALLEY, OR, JULY 8 National number 70 Jeff Campbell made history at Sunny Valley Raceway by ousting the competition and taking a rare triple class win. Campbell's HiPoint/Simpson/Out Front/ProTee/Grants Pass Suzuki machinery destroyed the competition in the 250cc A, Open A and Open Pro mains. The 250cc A main event lined up eight finalists, and sportsman riders to contest the Rich Word prePared ~ mile TT course. Campbell's Suzuki RM water-pumper shot off the line at the green light while AMA Pros Greg Reynard (Hon) and Terry Phillips (H-D) followed in hot pursuit. David Whiting came out of a long retirement to put his YZ into fourth but was a little out of shape and trailed Campbell, Reynard and Phillips the entire race, as did Bob Ingel (Kaw). Reynard made a brief rally only have the door slammed in his face by Campbell, who refused to relinquish his lead. Campbell eventually shed the trailing contestants to breeze to an easy win by a quarter lap over Reynard and Phillips. Three AMA Novice Pros would be Campbell's closest rivalry in the Open A main. Campbell, going the pole on a Pro-Tec-built Yamaha TT500, vaulted into the lead on the opening lap. Coming down the oval portion it was Campbell, Robert Jokella (Hon) and Marty Shippey (Yam) the top three. BobKlum (Hon) got a bad start but came through rraffic in fast fashion to put himself amidst the fight for second behind Campbell who was long gone on the way to win number two. Second after a hard-fought bat- . tie went to Jokella. Ten contestants staged for the Pro Money main which was open to 2505 up to 750s. Reynards small 250 stunned all to lead Jokella, Whiting and Ingel (Hon) while Campbell got a miserable start mid pack. Campbell then picked off countless riders to settle into third as Reynard sped on his way to what looked like an easy win. Campbell had other plans, sped past Jokella and caught up to Reynard. Campbell put the throttle to its stops and caught Reynard in the TT section and blistered on his way to collect the first triple win of the season_ Only the record books will indicate the last time anyone took three classes, which goes way back if it's happened at all. Reynard took second place money, edging Jokella and Whiting. Results - OPEN PRO: 1. Jeff Campbell; 2. Greg Reyttard; 3. Robert JoUIla; 4. David Whiting; 5. Bob Ingel. 250 A: 1. Jeff Campbell; 2. Robert JoI III e ..... e :I: lL By Mike Vancil FREMONT, CA, ]ULY 4 Johnny Gardner put three flawless rides together to make his own spectacular display before a record crowd at the weekly Continental Motorsports Club night motocross. Gardner took the extra eHort to acknowledge his sponsors, Moto-X Fox and Honda Peninsula over the P.A. system after his win. Gardner was quick out of the gate in all three motos but had to work to get by 125cc Kawasaki rider Kimo Casey, sponsored by Contra Costa Honda, and 250cc Honda jockey Randy Law. Unsuccessful challenges were mounted by Law in motos one and two, while in the third mota, an inspired ride by John Dauth, privateer Honda rider from San Jose, fell short. Craig Christian (Yam) crashed while running second in moto two but picked it up to finish a lap down. He came back tougher in moto three to gain a third, but it proved too little, too late. Kimo Casey ended with the best 125cc performance. In the 250cc Intermediate class, southlanders Darren Sykes (Kaw) and Charlie Tissen (Hus) pretty much had the measure of the Baylands regulars. Darren handily won the first moto but was bested by hard charging Dave Minjares on a Michael Minjares-owned Honda in moto two. Tissen was steady in bringing the Husqvarna home to a third and a fourth for fourth overall. Morgan Hills' John Ensign (Hon) rode his best race at Baylands to hold off Danny Sell (Hon) and Tissen. Two come-from-behind performances in the I25cclntermediate class by Bin Avery (Kaw) not only earned an overall victory but notification from Referee Rich Wilson that his CMC points and victories earned at Baylands were sufficient to boost him to Ex.pert status. Patterson, Strong pound Bellingham Pro-AmFT By Clay Light BELLINGHAM, WA, JULY 7 AMA Expert heavyweights Randy Patterson of Bellingham and Seattle's Kirk Strong thrashed the Pro-Am classes at Hannegan Speedway's quarter-mile flat track prognrn in ,&lIingham. Derek Mehen (52) leeds Petrick Mullis in 250Cc Beginner Division One eetion et Corone Recewey. Brien Celhoun went home with the gold. Patterson got by Strong on the last lap to win the Open Pro main event while Strong led the 250cc Pro main from start to finish, as well as taking the 250cc and Open rrophy dashes. Strong wasted very little time putting his CR250 Honda water-pumper to the head of a fine line-up of AMA Pros. Brian McGonigal (Yam), AMA Novice Randy Roose (Yam) and Patterson were circuiting the "short track," which is actually a little over a quarter mile in length, behind Strong. Strong left everybody well behind during the 12-lap main event while McGonigal loomed in second and Patterson made up the top three. Roose, A.J. Eschwig (Hon) and JeH Still (Yam) gave chase and held down the fourth through sixth positions, but it was Strong riding all alone, unchallenged for yet another win. A McGonigal/Patterson/Roose close finish came moments after Strong cruised to the pits. Strong sat the pole position after dominating the heat races and clocking in for the fastest time of the evening on his Seattle Honda HarleyDavidson 750witha 17:12. There was an additional one-hundred dollars for a 750cc twin to win the main event. Strong kept that in mind by pulling a holeshot to led the 12 contestants, but row two didn't leave the line - requiring a restart. Strong put his 750 back into the lead of the final with Patterson and McGonigal hounding from behind. AMA Pro points are awarded for main finishes and many were hungry for advancement points, with the exception of Patterson, Strong and McGonigal who are now Experts. The leading trio came down the straight with Roose and Darrell Hendrickson (Yam) in fourth and fifth places. Hendrickson was making his appearance after a nasty get-off at Castle Rock's Regional final two years ago. He rode: quite well amidst Roose and Steve Aseltine on a Canadian Yamaha 500. Patterson looked for a way around Strong for the entire race, butcouJdn't come up with anything until coming into the final turn. Patterson squeezed his 500 KTM into an opening and motored down the straightaway to get the win. Strong's chances for the additional one-hundred dollars was dwindled to a second place, and McGonigal rode well to nab third ahead of Aseltine, Eschwig (Hon) and Hendrickson. Beier, Sands battle for top By Terry Whytel ORANGE, CA, JULY 7 Yamaha pilot Mike Beier and Honda rider Richard Sands dueled in both 250cc Pro motos at this week's Saddleback MX event with Beier finally besting both motos. Sands jumped to an early lead in race one as Beier worked to overcome a poor start. After two laps Sands had opened a commanding lead, but Beier broke free of the pack and set after the flying Honda rider. Beier caught and passed Sands at the halfway point and cruised in for the win. Sands stayed on the gas to finish second as Yamaha-mounted Ian Fitz-Gibbon pushed his way to third. Sands again gained the early lead in round two with Beier pressuring from the number two slot. Sands kept Beier at bay until late in the mota when lapped riders slowed his pace and Beier slipped into the lead to clinch the overall win. Sands picked up the runner-up share of the purse money with Yamaha rider Tetsumi Mitsuyasu rounding out the top three overall as Fitz-Gibbon DNF. Honda-mounted Steve Coster proved fastest in 250cc Intermediate action. Coster clinched the overall win in a convincing fashion with Suzuki pilot Mike Edmonds having to settle for second overall ahead of Kayo Knight, aJso Suzuki-mounted. Results 250 PRO; 1.
