Strong storms Kootenai HM By Clay Ught COEUR D' ALENE, !D, JU E 24 National number 59 Kirk Strong topped the Open Expert main event at Kootenai County Fairgrounds and was ecstatic about the $1,000 payoff. Strong's Seallie Honda/Simpson-sponsored Harley-Davidson beat ational number 24 Randy Green (Hi-Poi 11l/ -0/ Pro-fueI/Lillie/BeJ-Ray H-D). Arney Wick breezed to the 500cc Expen main event win on his Honda while Green again rode to second. Mickey Fay's Marushin/Hi-Point/Ammco Tools/York Honda-sponsored waterpumper took the win in the 250cc Expert main. The mains paid $1,000, $350 and $200 to win, respectively. Fay, Strong (Hon) and Ron Yamamoto (Yam) led down the long straightaway at the start of the 250cc Expert main. Wick did a good job of coming through traffic to sellie into fourth behind Yamamoto. Fay sailed out front while Strong kept an eye on the leader. Yamamoto, Wick and Toby Ashley (Hon) of Boise held down the top five positions as Fay flew to his only main event win of the evening. Yamamoto and his trusty Honda CR500 jumped the stan of the 500cc Expert main event, drawing a row three start. Wick and Green (Hon) were quickly in the 1-2 positions while Yamamoto rode like a madman to settle into the top five which had Wick outfront and sailing. Wick has won this event every year in the history of the race and said before the race, ''I'm saving myself for this one." Wick and Green put ground on Yamamoto, who pulled himself into contention after gelling Fay for third in the later stages. In the Open Expert main event winner Strong and his 750 found the track much to their liking, motoring into a wicked holeshOlto lead Green and Wick, which made a Harley top three. Wick did an excellent job of holding 0(( charges from Fay (H-D) and AMA Junior John "Mad Dog" Mattocks (H-D). Green has always been one to come from nowhere and steal the lead but Green was to be denied; Strong has had more experience on the big 750s and used it to his advantage to hold off late advances or the pe ky Green, winning for the second year in a row. Local rider Wick did a superb job or keeping Fay to fourth. Fay and company drove all night from Castle Rock to race, and held off Mallocks and Yamamoto. Results OPEN EX: 1. Kirk Strong (H·D); 2.
