Smith cops Badgers 0.37 HS By Rick Curtis LUCER E VALLEY, CA,JUNE 24 Extensive police work established a well-marked hare scrambles course, but it failed to stop Team Husky's Dan Keith Dysert (77) won the 250cc Intermediate class at DeAnza over Mike Fitzgerald (4) and Tom Hodgin (89). the field during the heat race, and it didn't take him long LO let everyone know he was going to do it again in the main. By the fourth lap he ha.d everything in control and was on his way. The battle for second was much tighter as Bird got by Klatt on the seventh lap. This time Klatt wasn't going to let go, as he came back LO reclaim second on the white flag lap and was still there at the checkered. Bird came up with third and Bobby Sande.rs was fourth. Bud Carroll was right on target in the Open Expert half mile. He let Ron Sheets lead it for one lap before he put his big Harley out in front LO stay. Sheets nailed down the second spot with Randy Bird third. Theonly battle was for the fourth spot between Dan Kane and Ross Thompson, with Thompson being in front when it counted. The Bell brothers, Jason and Ron, had to be the hard luck riders of the night as was evidenced by their troubles in the Open Expert TT. Jason got the holeshot, but three laps into the race he was sidelined. Jim Steet LOok ov~r the number one spot, with Ron Bell running in second. Ron lost that spot when Jim Kesler came blowing by followed by little brother Jason Bell. One lap later Ron was out WIth mechanical problems but Jason picked up third behind Jim Kessler. Hale hauls at Hillside By D. Powers BOYD, TX, JUNE 23 Mike Hale entered four classes, plus the cash Mini class, and won them all. Hale, on his Carter Yamaha in the 80cc Senior short track class, rode without letting off the gas. When he look<:d over his shoulder he found Scotue Williams ready LO pass, but Williams couldn't find a way around. Trace Polson, on a Kissinger Autosponsored 125cc Honda, led the hort track class for the first two laps, with Chad McCracken and Hale moving up fast. Hale passed in lap three and no one could catch up to the speedster. Polson settled for second, with McCracken third. Shon Stoval, mounted on a Stoval Cycle Special 490 Yamaha, didn't.let anything stand in the way of WIOning his heat and the main event. Not even when part of his pipe came off, did he slow down. SLOval in the Open Pro short track class rode hard and fast, while Scott Scherb and Andy West were fighting for second. At first, Scherb tried going around SLOval in turns three and four, and when that didn't work, he dropped back LO fight for second and third with Eldon Hultgren and West. StovaJ won by a large margin, with West number twO, Scherb third, and Eldon - who rode a fantastic race - fourth. In the Open Amateur TT class, Bobby Shaw came in second in his heat LO Alan Powers. Shaw' 500 Suzuki was running on a Oat, and although it slowed him down a Little, he was ahead of Willie McCoy's third. Powers is already second in points at Hillside, with Shaw in first. The reigning number one plate holder took the overall win in the Badgers M.C.-promoted event. Early morning rains continued until an hour before the start, promising good traction and no dust. The previous day, one of intense heat and dust, nearly proved di astrous for Smith. While practicing for the race, he destroyed his Husky's motor. For mo t riders that would have been the end. mith, however, borrowed the lOp end from a friend's motor and had it ready by race time Sunday. The race was underway on time and as usual, Smith was in-the lead. Chuck Steams stayed close to Dan throughout the first lap. Closing on both of them was Ed Pierce on a 250 Yamaha. Smith began pulling away midway around the second lap. Stearns' Honda began experiencing rear brake problems and Pierce began reeling him in. For all intents and purpose, they crossed the finish together; Stearns was second overall and second Open, while Pierce got third overall and first 250. Mark Zoller brought his KTM in for second 250cc Expert sometime later. The Cagiva boys once again dominated the 125cc Expert class. Duane Summers led from the start with archrival Tommy Elias close behind. However, Elias didn't find second easy. If John Brasch Jr's Husky hadn't gotten a [lat, Elias would have wound up third instead of Brasch. Vet Bill Saltzman took his Husky to first place honors. Vets Bill Becker on a Honda and Wes Anderson Jr. on another Husky rounded out the top three in the field. To no one's surprise, Lori Farmer, current ~omen's number one plate holder, gUided her Honda to another win. Like Smith, Farmer is in a class by herself. First Senior' was Ron Hall on board a Yamaha with Curt Horst and his Husky second. The Novices and Beginners were underway on time and without problems. Several riders went past the smoke bomb locked in a dead heat. Kevin Miles shoved his 250 Yamaha into the lead with Curt Crandall on a 250 KTM and Tommy Voss, also on a 250 KTM close behind. Michael Johnson was running fourth overall and first open Novice. By the second lap, Johnson had dropped off the pace a bit. The Miles/CrandalllVoss battle continued LO the finish, with Miles finishing first overall, first 250. Crandall and Voss had to settle for second and third respectively. Johnson brought his Yamaha in fourth overall but first Open Novice. Shawn Dejong was first Beginner with Tim Klekner second. With the rains and the following cloudiness, racing conditions could not have been better. The course was fast and fun and the Badgers did an excellent job of managing it. The next race is a Dual European Scram- bles out of Stoddard Wells, co-sponsored by Desert M.C. and the Invaders. The Slash X will offer a cookyour-own-steak, live band and wet T-shirt contest Saturday, July 14. Results OPEN EX: 1. Dan Smith (Hus); 2. Chuck Stearns 3. Chris Crandell (Hon). 250 EX: 1. Lori Farmer (Hon), Garcia grabs DeAnza MX win By Michael Gillies SUNNY MEAD, CA, JUNE 24 Kawasaki-mounted Deric Garcia landed the overall in DeAnza Cycle Park's Mini Beginner class with a 3-1 score to beat A+L Suzuki's Randy Whitmore. Jim McCorkell (Suz) took an ear.ly lead in the first moLO, wnh WhJlmore Garcia, and Ryan Pauls (Hon) hot dn his tail. When they finished the first lap, Yamaha-mounted Dante Herro who was a distant ixth-off the start, 'was in second and pushing Whitmore. Garcia had some trouble on the first lap which dropped him 10 seventh, but he was running a strong fifth behind Pauls and McCorkell by lap three. Herro passed Whitmore and pulled a comfortable lead which carried him through the checke:s. Whitmore held on for second, whtle Garcia landed third when Pauls went down on the last lap. David Gold (Yam) holeshot the second moto, with McCorkell, and Yamaha Jider Bret Byard in tow. Herro bailed off hard over the plateau jump during the first lap, as did Gold elsewhere on the course. McCorkell crashed on lap two, which put Garcia out in front, ahead of Whitmore, Pauls, and Byard. WhJlmore spent the rest of the moto trying to make time on Garcia, but a combination of horsepower, suspension, and talent kept Garcia in front through the checkers with Whitmore only five seconds back. Herro put on a good show by getting up .in la~t place after his crash and workmg hiS way through the eight-rider class to third place. Garcia's 3-1 beat W~ll more's 2-2, while Herro salvaged third overall with his 1-3 effort. Results PEEWEE: ,. Adam Gold (Yam); 2. Jarrod Hensley (Yam), DlV II: 1, Jon Paul. (Yam). DlV III: 1.
