Faria named Arizona Speedway Champ By John Arthur Burrus PHOENIX, AZ, JUNE 23 Budweiser's "Flyin' Mike" Faria put together five aces in preliminary scratch heats then went on for the number one spot in the Scratch main to become Arizona State Speedway Champion. Justone point down at the end of the heats was bionic man Dave DeTemple, who had beaten everybody except Faria in the heat races. Third place qualifier for the main was Ed Castro, having fallen to second in two races, once behind Faria and once behind DeTemple. Gene Woods, the 7-Up man, had. earned 10 points to get into the number four spot for the Main but so had' Mark Dwyer. Woods got part of his 10 points by winning Race 14 over Gary Faas, who had blown an engine earlier and was riding Woods' spare bike. Faas led race 14 mostof the way, but Woods - who had good power on the straights plus the right outside moves in the corners - passed Faas coming out of the last turn to the checkers, thus winning the closest race of the evening. In the four-lap run-off, Woods outlasted Mark Dwyer for a spot in the main. As the gate popped up in the main, all four riders looked like they were piloting one very squirrelly eightwheel machine through the first turn, around the back stretch and into the second curve. Then Castro caught traction a little sooner than Woods, setting Woods down very hard on the dirt and taking out DeTemple in the process. Faria, the only rider to escape the crash, was flagged to a stop so the main could be restarted. Castro caused the red flag and gO[ an automatic fourth-place finish, and Woods was unable to ride, so was automatically awarded third. After the remaining two bikes were restarted for the main, DeTemple made an aggressive run at Fari'a but suffered engine problems. Showing real sportsmanship, DeTemple coasted to the finish line and handed Faria the checkered flag for his victory lap. Bast Brothers strike at Napa By Jann Houston NAPA, CA, JUNE 16 In a scene right out of "10 Years Ago," a pair of brothers named Bast fought for the Seratch main event win at Napa. Not the Mike/Steve pairing ofa decade ago, but their cousins,' Harlan Bast Jr. and Bart Bast. Harlan jumped into the lead at the start with his 17-year-old brother Bart claimed second. It was clear that this event was definitel y not a case of "brotherly" team racing. Bart" attempted, with fierce determination, to overtake his sibling on every turn. Several laps were a scorers' nightmare coming across the line; too close to call. At the close finish, it was Harlan who prevailed to win the first Scratch main of his racing career. Bart was second, Oavid Faria Jr., third, followed by Mike Delacy. In the Handicap Main Event John Houston Jr. led the entire event by a straightaway until turn four on the last lap, when he hooked up. high- sided and flipped into' the infield, which allowed Rocky Robinson to capitalize on his misfortune for the win. Houston, uninjured, and seemingly unaffected. shrugged it off as "that's racing!" Bart Bast was second and Robert Curry placed third. In the Division Two main, Dirck Sauer was again impressive as he took the win with style and very little immediate competition. Mark Day was second and Mark Zeissler third. Ron Arlt won the Division Three main, as well as his heat event, executing more wheelies on the track than John Cook probably would in a full night of racing. "Spine tingling" was the best description for it, especially to his fellow competitors on the track. Chris Lopez was second, and Tom Castagnola was third. Orlandi makes it three at Auburn By Jann Houston AUBURN, CA, JU E 15 Paul Orlandi claimed the lead from the pole position and rode the outside in a side-byside duel with Duane Yarrow. Orlandi claimed the victory with a "dive" toward the pole at the finish, . making it three Scratch main wins for Orlandi this season at Auburn. It was actually a "match race" main event; Mike Delacy lost power and was out early in the event, as was Bart Bast. Ron Sweeton came home from his honeymoon and rode a borrowed bike to win his first Handicap main event of the season. It was not an easy victory due to constant pressure from Steve Elstins and Greg Martz, who could never captitaize on, "mistake that never happened." The hardest thing Sweeton had to do tonight was explain to his new wife, Kandi, about the bikini-clad trophy girll In Division Two main action Dirck Sauer, who won the D-3 main last week, moved up to Division Two tonight and ",on the main event again! Charlie Haines and Mark leissler placed a close second and third, respectively, making Sauer work for it. Bryan Henrikson won the Division Three main in a photo finish with Keith Kavanaugh. They both got so excited they lost control and crashed right after they took the checkered flag. As announcer Mike Rooney, said, "That was a good place to do it. " Scott Brant and Bobby Hedden put on another great Junior main event with Brant prevailing to take home the win. - Results SCRATCH MAIN EVENT: 1. Paul Orlandi; 2. Duane Yarrow: 3. Mike Delacy; 4.
