Faria finished third in the Scratch main behind Kelly Moran and Alan Christian. Ferrell, Foster fast at Costa Mesa By Scott Daloisio COSTA MESA, CA, J NE 29 "Dangerous Dubb" Ferrell drew the number four spot for the stan of the Scratch main, but he put himself into the lead in the (ir t bend and never looked back as he won his second main event at the Orange County Fairgrounds. Ferrell looked like thing were going to go his way when he moved out front on the original go, only to have all three o( his competitors go down in the fir t corner. On the second attempt Jim Lawson put his Jawa into the lead from the pole with Ferrell moving by in turn one. Kelly Moran also shot by Lawson before the end of the first circuit and set his sights on Ferrell. However, Ferrell (Arai/Cody Products/Vera's/Oakley/STPlTsubaki/NGK Jaw) was hooked up and there was Iitile chance of cat hing him. The defending National Champion closed up the gap on the third circuit but Ferrell quickly opened it up again and went on to a four-length win. Moran took second with Lawson third and Dave DeTemple fourth. John Foster (O'Neal USA/Simpson/Oakley/Cirello Wes) has been riding like a reborn rider the past few weeks and he put it all together Friday to win his first Handicap main of th e season . Fa ter, was second off the 20 behind Randy Blevins, who captured last week's main. Foster quickly ducked LO the inside of Blevins in turn two and from that point ran away from the pack to hammer home a Convincing win. Andy Northrup also got by Blevins on the first circuit. He ran away from the remainder of the pack but couldn't close in on Foster. Blevins took third by doing a masterful job of holding off the rest of the screaming pack. Results c 2U· SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Spencer FREMO T, CA, JU E 28 Mike Faria lived up to his "Flying" nickname opening a orCaI week of racing at Baylands Raceway with a Scratch main event win, econd place behind Duane Yarrow in the Handicap main and a victory over Paul Orlandi in a special match race. Drawing for start position for the Scratch was favorable as he got the number one golf ball and then took the holeshot, along with Y<\rrow, LO the first turn. Yarrow held a good line but Faria flew and held the point for the distance, winning by a bikelength with Yarrow on the Snooky Owen four-valve close behind. Faria's STP/Budweiser/Oakley/ hoei wason the50-yard-line throughout the night and in the Handicap main, Faria Mike contended with Yarrow all the way through the five lapper. Jeff Jones, led the first lap but threw it away with Yarrow and Faria barely mis ing the cra h and taking the lead from "Kid" Curry down the back straight. WTC member takes SME at IMS By Scott Daloisio SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JUNE 27 Fresh off the plane from Mariestad, Sweden, Kelly Moran raced to his third Scratch main win of the sea on at John LaDouceur's Inland MOLOrcycle peed way • ·on ~'BpYL-itl'!e L-eftgce "";~IIr.·· ••••• Moran, who was in weden to help the USA win the Oversea Final of the World Team Cup and put them into the World Final in Poland in August drew the pole and was first into turn one trailed by Alan Christian, Mike Faria and Tom Burba. Once out front Moran styled up a one-and-a-half-Iength lead over Christian. Faria tried to take second on the second go- 'round but Christian was equal LO the challenge hung on to the show spot. It was a Moran night as he took his third checkered flag of the evening on the cratch ide. Lannan Bengts on (Ni ator/Simpson/Oakley/Lindstrand Jaw), the 1978 Swedish Junior National Champion, won his first-ever big paycheck in the USA when he captured the Handicap main from the IO-yard line. Bengtsson, who came here so he could get more track time, also won his heat and semi LO take a clean sweep on the evening. On the first attempt to run the main he was quickly passed in turn two by Mike Mazzacane. Unfortunately a red flag flew before the end of the lap, forcing a complete restart with the entire field. This time Bengtsson again got out fir t but he stuck to the pole for the entire five lap. He also had to deal with Christian, who was putting on his usual deva tating show from the 40. Chri tian moved into second on lap three and bagan to hunt down Bengtsson. He seemed set to go by for the lead when he caught a rut coming out of tum two on the white-flag lap. Chri tian hooked up and wheelied into BengLSson. Miraculously BengtSson did not go down but Christian did, dropping him from a possible win to last spot. Faria, Ott hot at Ventura By Bill Locey VE TURA, CA, JU E 26 For the first time since Bobby McLain did it even years ago, a local rider finally made it to Firsl Division at the Commotion by the Ocean. Ventura's Walt Farnum, riding competently but getting nowhere as a back-yardage econd Division rider, made D-l as a reserve. The previous week, Farnum, 17, got his first chance, but fell over. This time, he smoked the field in his heat race. Often, rookies wilt when they get in traffic, but not Farnum. When Bob Ott blew by on the inside during the semi, Farnum not only hung in there, but beat last week's winner, Mike Maz2acane, (or second. In the main, Farnum led for three lap or until the heavy traffic from behind caught up. Ott again went inside around turn four with Kurt trommer right behind him. Farnum, who looked all set to fade likea cheap IT-shin, in tead gave it thft.WD,I,r)!i',J ., pulled even with, then pa sed Mike Faria on the la t lap to take third, giving his large contingent of fans, and all the local in general, finally something to shout about. ForOll, who will bean the40next time, it was his second win of the sea on at Ventura. La t time, he sma hed hi trophy to pieces afterword. Thi time, it was a plaque instead and Oll decided LO keep it. "I live in a trailer - I don't have room for trophies, but this I like," said Oll later. Also enjoying his D-I debut was that fast guy in green, Rich Sweaney, coming off a broken collarbone. Sweaney won the Handicap Consy. In the cratch portion of the program, Faria won his eighth main and ninth Tuesday night trophy overall. There wasn't much to say except Faria easily won all of his scratch rides. John andona, making his '84 Ventura debut, entered the main unbeaten, but lost LO "Flyin' Mike" by about ten lengths. In only his second week in Second Division, Rick Vanderham won his heat and the main off the zero. Donny Butler was second and moved into the lead in D-2 track points with 27. Robinson, 2, everybody else, 0 at Visalia By Bill Locey VISALIA, CA, JUNE 23 "The Flyin' Hawaiian," Buddy Robinson, made the most of his last California rides for awhile when he won both mains at the Central Valley Speedway Club's weekly festivities in Visalia. For Robinson, the defending Lrackchamp, it was his second and third wins of the year here. He won both mains on two occasions last year. Robinson, off to ride for Exeter in the British Speedway League, had to work for his win in the Handicap main. Coming off the 50-yard-line, Robinson passed three guys rather easily then gOt bottled up behind Walt Farnum and local hot guy, Rodney ullivan. Robinson passed both of them on turn one of the last lap to secure his win. Farnum took econd followed by Sullivan, who in turn held off Donny Faulkner. . The cratch Main wa basically a pair of match ra e . The one that decided the winner was the mindsnapper. Robinson and Sullivan took turns pas ing each other three times before Robinson finally took the lead for good. Behind them, Farnum took third, helped when Ron Hardin's skid shoe fell off. Robert Fa irch ild led the Challengers' main for all but theall-important last 15 feet when he lost it and hit the crashwall. Bakersfield rider Tom Settlemire took the win. Results SCRATCH MAIN: 1.
