Sullivan smokes Turlock By Ronnie Allyn TURLOCK, CA, JUNE 5 Rodney Sullivan, the newest sensation of northern California speedway racing, walked off with his second Handicap Greg Hancock (94) leads the Juniors at San Bernardino. Christian crusades to IMS win By Scott Daloisio SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JUNE 6 Alan "Crazy" Christian warmed up for the American Final by racing to a convincing win on a cloudy, chilly night at John LaDouceur's Inland Motorcycle Speedway. Dubb Ferrell, from the pole, was first out of the gate over Sam Ermolenko and Christian. As they approached thefirst corner Ferrell made a slight manuever LO the right that sent the field into disarray. Christian' quickly recovered and put the STP/ Val voline/Bell/ Hi-Poi n t/PBI / Tsubaki Godden in front of Ferrell as they exited turn four on the opening lap. Ferrell managed to stay close for a lap before Christian started LO pull away for what turned outLO be a halfstraightaway win. While Christian and Ferrell were out front, Sam Ermo· lenko and Kelly Moran bauled side by side for the third spot. Ermolenko . beat Moran to the line by inches. Randy Blevins (Hy Tecb/Jones Goggles Godden) made only his second IMS First Division appearance and he won the Handicap main from the zero-yard line. DeTemple, Sullivan Visalia victors By Bill Locey VISALIA, CA, JUNE 2 Dave DeTemple started a streak of his own even as he ended Randy Griffith's by winning the Scratch main at round four of Saturday night speedway in Visalia. Rodney Sullivan looked good in winning the Handicap main for the second time this season - this time off the 20. • •• -- ,. t'P---- • • ~.-ali. In Scratch racing, DeTemple went faster than the CHP after a speeder over the Grapevine as he easily won his heat. In his semi, it was no contest again as DeTemple won by plenty over Bakersfield rider Ron Hardin who held off Don Butler and Sullivan to earn his ticket to the main. The main wasn't such a cruise for DeTemple. If the race had've been 15 feet shorter, Hardin would've won. As it was, DeTemple made a timely, not LO mention wild, last-turn drive which gave him the lead a split second before the checkered. A ways behind the leaders, there was another two man baule as local Todd Varner held off Griffith in a replay of their semi. Kingsburg karate instructor Mike ReMine, whom everyone calls "sir," won the Second Division main. Results SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Dave DeTemple; 2. Ron Hardin; 3. Todd Varner; 4. Randy Griffith.
