Wds~>n, a 250cc Novice, was not only gammg on, but passing everal J unior cla rider before lap two. He walked away with first overall for the day on a Honda, with Ben Saville and Gilbert Kwolek of Hanford coming in second and third, also on Hondas. The 80cc Junior class has proven to be one of the most exci ting to watch, with the excellent performances by Kawasaki-mounted Lance G~man and Kevin Peoples, both hailmg from Bakersfield. Goodman finished first overall and leads the series, with Peoples in second and James Tate of Mojave in third. 125cc Intermediate Jeff Reynolds of Bakersfield pulled a good lead in his first moLO. Choosing to accept the challenge of the triple jump instead of comfortably completing th race, he crashed and was unable to compete the rest of the day. Taking first in the class was Steve Lucente of Fresno on Yamaha, with Alan Pierce of Bakersfield following in se ond and Dallen McKenney in third. mento Raceway, but after the gate dropped m the 125cc Pro class it was his competition that was breathless after chasing the Hi-Point/Kawasaki-mounted Harriger LO the checkered in both moLOS. Hi-PointiKawasaki-mounted Tim Aston and RCSuzuki- ponsored Kenny Klein began the first moLO battle. Then, Harriger swooped the lead and held on for the win, while A LOn held his Team Green machine WFO and was still forced to ettle for se~ond. Klein was third while Cory Cantaloupi - who till forced to settle for second. Moto two went to the "Hare" again as Klein battled Aston for second and cameouton top. Harriger, Klein and ~ston also were 1-2-3 overall, respectively. Kenny Klein was flawless as he roosted his RC uzuki to the win in both 250cc Pro motos for the overall. Chip Vanderford put his Honda inLO second the first moto and third the second time out for second overall. Third overall went LO Dave Wood, who scored a 3-4 for th iI'd overa II. Joe Wnght rode the wheels off his HiPoint/Honda of a ramenLO-SUpported CR250 for second in the second mode, but a D IF in moto one kept him out of contention for the overall. Suzuki-mounted Steve Palfy was second overall with a 1-3 score while third overall went to C.D. Jamie ~ooten's 3-1 tally in the 80cc oVlce class was just what it took to walk away with the overall while Kawasaki-mounted Grant Mi: chael on u ed consisten y in his 2-2 grading for second overall. Joe Joe Joerger smoked the first moto in his typi al Yamaha-style, but problems beset the youngster in moLO two and he was relegated to fourth, and third overall. Results Results 60: 1. Jeb Brock (7) was the eventual winner. • to beat John McManus (Suz). who had a fifth in the first moto becau e of a poor start, but came back to smoke everyone in the second moto. Critser grabbed the holeshot in the firs~ moto followed closely by Tom mlth (Yam) and Dave Daniels (Hon). McManus was a distant seventh off the start, but worked his way to a strong fourth by the second lap. Honda-"'!ountedKen Carlson had passed DanIels on the first lap and was givmg SmIth some serious pressure. On lap six mith bobbled and Carlson slipped by, but had no chan e of catching Crit er, who was a good 20 second out in fronl. So, the order at the checkers was Critser, Carlson Smith, and Honda rider Todd Schaer: fer who made a daring last lap pass for fourth over McManus. In the. second moLO, McManus tuffed hiS RM250 thl"Ough the first turn m front ofCntser, Mike Michelli (Hon) and Carlson. Yamaha-mounted Howard Keeling passed Carlson and set his sights on Michetti. Unfortunately, Keeling passed Michelli while he was laying on the ground after crashmg out of contention. M Manus continued to lead with Critser about 10 econds back. Keeling held off Carlson for the remainder of the moto making the order McManu' C~itser, Keeling, Carlson, and Scot; Rippens (Yam). Critser's 1-2 edged out McManu ' 5-1 for first, while Carlson's 2-4 put him in third over Keeling's 6-3. In Pee Wee Mission Yamaha's Robert Allen Cole roosted his YZinger to a well earned 1-2 tally, which was enough to put him in first overall over Sunwest Yamaha's Troy Halmg. Green took the lead aIter e.arly leader Mickey Fay's demise on hiS Wood-Rotax. Campbell clocked in at 15.20, followed by Green (15.22) and Charlie Barkman (KTM), who posted a 15.25 to finalize the trophy dash for the Experts. Top Junior qualifyerwasFi herona500Yamaha at 15.37, followed by the 15.45 of ROlaX rider Brian McGonigal. . Expert heat races were superb, pittmg countless numbers of Nationally-ranked riders. From each heat, the top three LOok direct tickets to the main. The best heat race came in the third, five-lap slugfe t which was to be a sneak preview of the main. Thomas McCullough (Lou Kinish Tnumph) and Green led coming down the hill, until he got around McCullough for the win, with NatIonal number 74 Mike ullivan third. The rest of the field came from a single, eight-rider semi. which took the top three and put Campbell, Brad Hurst (Tri), and Washington's Duane Gerrard in the final. Gone are the days of the 250cc twostroke in AMA Professional TT racing in the Northwest. ovices are now eligible to ride 500cc four-strokes; and eleven of twelve were on similar machinery.
