had a fifth in the first moto becau e of
a poor start, but came back to smoke
everyone in the second moto.
Critser grabbed the holeshot in the
firs~ moto followed closely by Tom

McManus was a distant seventh off
the start, but worked his way to a
strong fourth by the second lap. Honda-"'!ountedKen Carlson had passed
DanIels on the first lap and was givmg SmIth some serious pressure. On
lap six mith bobbled and Carlson
slipped by, but had no chan e of
catching Crit er, who was a good 20

CLACKAMAS, OR, MAY 18
National number 24 Randy

Time trials started off the program
on the slick course with Fay's Rotax

. Expert heat races were superb, pittmg countless numbers of Nationally-ranked riders. From each heat, the
top three LOok direct tickets to the
main. The best heat race came in the
third, five-lap slugfe t which was to
be a sneak preview of the main.
Thomas McCullough (Lou Kinish
Tnumph) and Green led coming
down the hill, until he got around
McCullough for the win, with NatIonal number 74 Mike ullivan third.
The rest of the field came from a single, eight-rider semi. which took the
top three and put Campbell, Brad
Hurst (Tri), and Washington's Duane
Gerrard in the final.
Gone are the days of the 250cc twostroke in AMA Professional TT racing in the Northwest. ovices are
now eligible to ride 500cc four-strokes;
and eleven of twelve were on similar
machinery. The ovice main, which
opened up the 1984 Pro dirt track
season, Mark lilian and nemisis Randy Roose (BBRP/Kleen Taps/Nymo
Plates/Olson Auto Body) shot into
the lead at the green. They put a conSIderable margin on third place, the
lone 250cc rider, Bill Taylor of California. Taylor fended off a pack consisting of Kenny Wheaton, Matt
Holm and Marty Zirbel - to finish a
fine third. The real surprise was a
finish line pass that Roo e put on
IIIJan to snag the win by a wheellength t the checkered flag.
!,"isher and Fitzhugh had a good
