Michlifsch, Tyler shine at Woodland Gold Cup By Brian Barnes WOODLAND, WA, MAY 20 Tim Michlitsch (Yamaha support-Malcolm Smith-ATKFMF) was the dominant factor at the third round of the Yama- 36 ha Gold Cup as far as the I25cc Professionals went, while Scon Tyler (Team Jofko-Lynnwood Yamaha) put in a great, two-mOLO sweep LO lay claim to the 250cc class and Mike Larson (Honda-support/Hi-Point) ke'pt a Yamaha sweep from occuring as his 2-1 tally edged Tyler's 1-2. The first round of 125 action found 21 riders lining up at the gate for the start. Michlitsch timed the gate perfectly and was first around turn one, bu t a trio of Kawasaki riders including Larin Inman, Rob Watilo and Craig Stanaway - couldn't decide who should follow Michlitsch, and wound up on the ground. Enumclaw Kawasaki's Marvin Waldo, Lynn wood Yamaha's Cory Klaudt, and Suzuki-mounted Brett Tremblay took the second, third and fourth spots while the pack started LO settle imo the first lap. By the third lap, Michlitsch, Waldo and Klaudt had eight seconds on Hi-Point Honda rider Steve Oster. However, Oster moved LO third at the start of the fourth lap after Klaudtlayed it down. ·From that poim on, Michlitsch had clear sailing, and he took the win while Waldo and Oster put in outstanding rides for second and third. The second stanza again found J\fichlitsch with a nice holeshot while Pro newcomer Richie Lee, Klaudt, Inman and Watilo were in close pursuit. Michlitsch immediately put ground between himself and the rest of the field and by the halfway mark was in clear command. The positions behind him though, were up for grabs as Klaudt, Waldo, Pro-Caliber's Jeff Cropper and Watilo jockeyed for positions. Waldo was probably the most aggresive rider on the track as he gained ground and blew by Klaudt on lap nine. Michlitsch cruised to his second win of the day and extended his poims lead, while Waldo's fine ride nelled him another second. Scott Tyler was all smiles after his double-moLO sweep of the 250cc Pro class. Wonderboy Steve Smith led the start of the first race while Tyler, Cropper and Honda-mounted Rob Bass followed. But within the first lap, Tyler had quickly assumed the top pot. By lap four, Tyler had stretched out a nice lead over Yamaha support/MX Fox rider Doug Lange, who had pu tin a strong charge to take second. Smith, Cropper and Larson followed the pair, with Larson moving up one spot the next lap. Positions stayed the same umillap seven when Larson slid out, allowing Jeff Chapman past. On lap nine Chapman berzerked his way past Smith, sendi ng the Suzuki rider 0[( the course to lose several positions. By the final lap, Tyler and Lange were long gone taking the top two spots while Larson worked his way up into third. Chapman, Bass and Cropper were fourth through sixth. The second moto start belonged to Lange, with Tyler and Airway Heights Yamaha's Gary Kuest right behind him. Wes Clark, Cagivamounted Rick Burgett and mith were the next three riders in line. By th.e end of lap one, Tyler had as umed the leading spot. On lap three, Burgell moved past Kuest into third, while Larson did the same to take the fourth spot the following lap. Tyler and Lange again cruised in the LOp twO spots with Larson gelling past Burgell to take third on lap six. Tyler's excellent ride came to a con- 125 PRO: 1. Tim Michlitsch (Vam); 2. ADELANTO, CA, MAY 20 Tony Bienert, John Ray and Bob Rutten opened up AMA District 37's pre-summer racing program with wins in the 125,250 and 500cc Pro classes, respectively, at Sunrise Valley Cycle Park. All three Pro classes ran in a combined event. Ray jumped into the first-moLO lead, pursued closely by Bienert, Rob Barnum (125) and Tod Sciacqua (250). They in turn were followed by Dave Foltz (500), RUllen, and Don Cline (500). From the end of lap one to midmoLO, Ray and Bienert pulled away to lead the pack by fi ve seconds. Behind them Barnum ran third, with Foltz gradually making his way by Sciacqua for fourth. Cline tried to make a move on RUllen, but displacing the large four-stroke Honda proved to be difficult. Late in the moLO Foltz began pressuring Barnum, and it worked. Sciacqua and RUllen also passed Barnum, but Sciacqua's ride ended when he went down in a cloud of dust. So the moto ended Ray, Bienert, Foltz and Rutten. . Atthe stan of the second moLO Ray, Bienen and Foltz all wem for the lead, but it was no COOlest as Ray took command. Bienert and Foltz battled briefly for . second, with the 125 KTM rider soon pulling out a two-second lead and then su·etching that advantage, before Foltz dropped out with unexplained problems. That left the order at Ray with a 19-second lead over Bienen, followed by RUllen and Cline, and that' the way the moto ended. The top three each took wins in their respective classes. White, Keller clash at Oregon MX By Clay light MCMINNVILLE, OR, MAY 20 LRD/ML Valley Cycles Honda pilot Kevin White o.utrode Honda-support rider Rodney Keller in a second moto 250cc Pro shootout, which reversed the first moLO finishes and gave the overall to White at Mulkey O.R.V. Park's second race of the 1981 season. Grayson Hart (Sun Products/LRD Honda) took the Open Pro class using the same 2-1 score, and Suzuki rider Larry Hoefen bred I took the 125cc Pro class by storm, winning the first moto and getting second in moLO two behind Hart, this time on a Kawasaki. The Pro classes were by far the most competitive. Keller's Honda led the parade in the first 250cc Pro moto, which was the most exciting of the three Pro classes. White and Kevin Jansen (Hon) followed on the opening lap, but second position changed when Jansen jammed his way past White to go after Keller, who was beginning to pull away. Jansen challenged Keller at the midway point and rode "Radical Rodney's" rear wheel for five laps when he hi t the wire retaining fence and crashed, putLing White and Ron Sun (Suz) into the top three, followed by Jere Meeker (Cag) and Loch Names. A noticeable charge being made was by Rick Bozarth (Suz), who came from nearly la t to hound Meeker for fourth, and nabbing the position when Meeker slowed. Keller had a commanding lead and took the win
