win the Handicap main ---a race in which old timer Guy Waterson's comeback progress was derailed when he broke his ankle, but he still finished third. Tough guy, Guy. GriHith was certainly good when it counted (in the-main) after losing his first two Scratch rides. Yet another Randy, this one Randy Blevins, beat Gri££ith in a heat, and Ed Castro did likewise in the semi. Castro was leading the main for a lap or until his skid shoe started to fall of[. On the second lap Castro slowed to investigate, thus screwing things up for Ron Hardin behind him. But on the inside, Griffith and Walt Farnum buzzed by, and finished 1-2. In Handicap racing, Varner outgated low yardage rival Rodney Sullivan, and led the main until the last lap when Sullivan kamikazied inLO Varner, sending both horizontai lor an unscheduled soil sample. The race was ruled "an over" with Varner first and Sullivan last. Earlier, Bakersfield rider Larry Willey ended his brief one-week retirement, but crashed and hurt his hand after it ended up in Mark Dragoney's rear wheel. That's the stu££ retiremen t is made of. Moran snaps Faria's Ventura streak Bt Bill Locey VENTURA, CA, MAY 22 The streak is history. Mike Faria's record six-straight Scratch mains at the Ventura Raceway was broken by Kelly Moran, who not only won both mains, but all six of his rides for a perfect night. "Hey, so I'll start a new streak next time," said Faria. "I just started my own streak," said Moran, who has now won four Tuesday night mains to Faria's six. It was the first time Moran's bike had survived the main in a month, let alone went fast. In the main, Faria managed ro pull even with Moran several times on the first lap. But with unaccustomed power ro spare, Moran began LO pull away on the second lap and won by fi ve lengths, and the streak was over. In Handicap racing, Moran pulled speedway's neatest trick in triplicate as he won all of his rides off the 50yard line, passing live guys each time. Showing a fine £lair for the dramatic, Moran waited until the last lap to blow by Mike Mazzacane who was the final obstacle in the Handicap main, after battling with Faria and Alan Christian in the fastest and best race of the night. For a rider who hasn't won here since 1977, Moran is making up for lost time_ . In Second Division racing, Rich Sweaney LOok his fourth Ventura trophy by winning the D-2 main orr the 25-yard line. je££ jon.es was leading until his bike died. Bart Onasch inherited the lead but Mark Weaver knocked him over around turn two. While that was going on, Sweaney went underneath both ol them, and by the time Weaver recovered, it was too late. In the Famous Old Guy Department; Bill Gray led his heat for two laps, let a couple of guys get by, then slid out around turn three on the fourth lap.
