GM wins first at IMS By Scott Daloisio SA BER ARDI 0, CA, MAY 30 It was a night of firsts Wednesday at John LaDouceur's Inland Motorcycle Speedway. It was the first time the Italian-made GM • Kelly Moren. he,. I..ding Shene McDoneld. wes six for six et Venture end took both mein events. Ferrell a terror at Costa Mesa By Scott Daloisio COSTA MESA, CA, JUNE I The "Dangerous One," Dubb Ferrell, turned in a stellar performance aboard the Vera'sl Arai/Oakley ISTP ICody Products factory Jawa to win both the Handicap and Scratch mains at the Orange County Fairgrounds. The first attempt to run the Handicap main was stopped on lap one when all six of the competitors went down in three separate crashes that amazingly took place on three separate turns. After everyone remounted and regained their dignity, John Foster took the lead from the 20 over Ed Castro. Castro took over when he slipped by on the back chute with Ferrell and Dave DeTemple also taking Foster before the end of the first gO-'round. Ferrell quickly hunted down Castro and got a tremendous drive coming off turn two on lap two. He was going by "Fast Eddie" when they made contact, sending Castro to the ground and to the back of the pack by the time he remounted. Keith Chrisco had moved into second but was well behind Ferrell and had no chance of making up the distance. DeTemple had third in the bag until a broken chain forced him into the infield, giving third at the checkered to Brad Oxley. In the Scratch main things were not looking so bright for Ferrell or any of the other competitors when Kelly Moran drew the pole. Moran had taken wins in four of the last five (including the last three in a row) Costa Mesa Scratch mains, and he led the pack into the first bend. Ferrell dropped to the inside on the back chute and started making a charge at Moran in turn three. He pulled to the inside as they exited turn four and took the lead in a wheelie on the front straightaway. Once Ferrell was by, Moran had to deal with Alan Christian. Ferrell began to lenghten his lead while Christian and Moran were having a war for second. Ferrell took the win, waving to the crowd as he crossed the line four lengths ahead of Moran who was closely followed by Christian. DeTemple got credit for the wrap up after dropping out on lap thtee. It was the first Scratch main win of the season for Jawa on one of the three weekly southern California tracks. Smooth riding Andy Northrup (J&:M Trophy &: Silk Screen/Scott Goggles/Mike Sullivan Racing AssoCIates Wes) took both his heat and the Second Division main from the 30yard line. Dave Hancock (Jaw) took the lead from Bob Tocco on lap one and went on to take an easy win for the second week in a row in the Third Division main. Results SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Dubb Ferrell (Jaw); 2. Kelly Moran (Gdn); 3. Alan Chriatian (Gdn); 4. Dave DeTemple (Jaw). HANDICAP: 1. Dubb FerrelItJawI; 2. Kailh Chrioco motor bad ever been raced at the track. It ended up being the first time the same motor had won a main event in the USA and the £irst time Brad Oxley had ever won a Scratch main at IMS. Oxley (Coors/Joe Jones Distribu ti nglCirell o/Bel- Ra ylSi m psonl Oakley/NGK) was using a motor owned b~ four-tim~ World Champion Barry Bnggs and Il was in tbe backup bike of current World Champion Egon Muller when he won the crown in Norden, West Germany last sum· mer. Mike Curoso got the gate from the number two spot with Oxley pulling alongside on the back chute. They ~allled side by side, Oxley down low WIth Curoso bouncing through the cushIOn until the cushion finally won the ballie and sen t Curoso down near the end of lap two. Mike Faria inherited second at that point with Gene Woods moving up to third but there was no denying Oxley his firstever IMS win two lengths ahead of Faria. Keith "Snakeman" Larsen (KRWI Tsubaki/Mackey'~ Auto CenterIHair By Bev Wes) captured his first IMS Handicap main in quite a few years fro":! t.he 20-yard line. Cary Faas was the mmal leader from the zero until "Snakeman" flashed by coming off turn two on the second revolution. Keith Chrisco, who has been red hot since coming out of retirement, took Faas for second on the next go-'round but he was unable to catch Larsen ove~ the £inal two circuits. Finishing behmd the lead duo was Alan Christian with Dubb Ferrell fourth. One of southern California's hot ~ew riders, Rich Sweaney, made his hrst-ever IMS Second Division appeara,:!ce .and. scored two impressive vICtones 10 hIS heat and the main to earn a trip back to the Io-yard line. S~eaney k~pt the throttle pegged on hIS Jawa 10 the main and never looked back. If he had taken a look he would have seen the remarkable ride turned in by Bob Ott who was coming from the 20. Ott quickly moved from fifth to third to second a dazz- ling move at the end of the first lap. He then raced by Danny Perkins but he ran out of laps before the checkered fell and was forced to settle for second behind Sweaney. Walt Farnum (Q-105 Jaw) proved that hIS zero yard line start was ajoke when he destroyed the field in both his heat and the main in IMS Third Di vision action. Results SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Brad Oxley (GM); 2. Mike Fene (Wes); 3. Gene WoodalGdnl; 4, Mike Curoso (Wes). HANDICAP: 1. Keith Larson (Wes); 2. Keith Chrosco (Jaw); 3. Alan Chriatian (Gdn); 4. Dubb Farrell (Jaw); 5. Class Criders shine at Turlock By Ronnie Allyn TURLOCK, CA, MAY 29 Duane Yarrow romped to his second Scratch main event win in a row, and newcomer Rodney Sullivan walked 0(£ with the Handicap feature in AMA speedway racing at the Stanislaus County Fairgrounds. Yarrow didn't waste any time getting out front in the Scratch main ~vent. Coming off the pole, hejumped mto the lead on the start, put three lengths on the field and cruised home first on the Snooky Owen Weslake. Keith Larsen, up from southern California, got around Dave Faria on the second lap for the number two spot but couldn't catch Yarrow. Larse~ was second on a WesJake, with Faria thIrd on a Jawa and Tom Ferris founh aboard another Weslake. . In the Handicap main event, Sullivan, making his fir t start in First I?ivision,. started from the zero-yard line on hiS We lake. He immediately went to the front as Robert Curry tried to catch him. Dave Faria got past Curry for second on the fourth lap, but time ran out and Sullivan took the win over Faria and Yarrow, both up from the 40-yard line. Sullivan is a good example of several northern California Class C Camel Pro Series veterans, now moving to speedway. Three weeks ago he won the Third Division feature. Last week he made easy work of Second Division, and this week with a shortage of First Division talent, he was moved up to First Division and won that in easy fashion. Stuart McDaniel, another former Class C rider, captured the Third Division main event on a Jawa, over Rick Hicks on a Weslake and Bryan Henrickson on a J awa. Mike Faria came up from southern California along with Keith Larsen, but had a bad night. He fell in the opening Handicap heat and finished last. He came out hard in his Scratch heat and won easily. He was leading the Scratch semi, when second-place ride.r Larsen lost his front wheel and bumped him, knocking the chain off and putting him out of the race. In a special two-out-of-three match race, Mike Faria beat his older brother Dave in two of the events. Keith Larsen also won a match race, over Paul Orlandi. Results SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Duane Yarrow (Wal); 2. Keith Larson (WeI); 3. Dave Faria (Jaw); 4. Tom Ferris ewes). HANDICAP MAIN: 1. Rodney Sullivan (Wes); 2. oa... Faria (Jaw); 3. Duane Yarrow (Wn); 4. Robert Curry (Jaw); 5.
