Nation retired on the final lap with mechanical woes. The 250cc Pro win went to Mike Pryor of Santa Maria, riding a Suzuki. Pryor won both events with seeming ease. Carroll jumps past Juniors at Spillway By Jim Pluhar SANTA MARIA, CA, MAY 27 It looked like Jim Diyorio of Santa Maria was going to have an easy victory in the 250cc Junior class at Spillway Park. Diyorio took the win easily in the first event but then, while leading his class in event number two, endoed himself out of the race. Stuart Carroll of Santa Barbara took his Honda on to victory and claimed first for the day in the division. Matt Nation fell while leading the field in the 250cc Intermediate portion of the race in event number one to give Randy Tittlemier of Ventura the win. Tittlemier came back to pass Buchli cruises to Colorado MX win By Larry Johnson Tim Buchli moved one step closer to the coveted 125cc Pro state championship title with a double moto victory in this weekend's double-points event, sanctioned by the Sports Riders Association of Colorado. Buchli's two-moLO vicLOry moves him ahead of Stacey Cook for the series lead. In moto one he was destined LO finish second behind Boo Stichter, but Stichter experienced a freak misfortune a lap and one-half from the finish. His left handlebar broke off and, while he managed to cripple home second, Buchli took advantage. Early in moto two, Buchli grabbed the lead after a mediocre start and cruised LO victory. His Vickery Yamaha teammate Art DeHoff finished second overall ahead of Cook. Stichter's luck got worse this moLO when his frame broke. However, Stichter gOt a reprieve later by winning the 250cc Pro class. After finishing second behind Albert Firestine in moto one, he enjoyed a wire-to-wire win in the second round. Firestine suffered a get-off while chasing Stichter in moLO two. The crash badly t~eaked Firestine's Yamaha, putting him out for the day. The day before, the Minis and Novices took LO the track. Darren DeLoach won the 80cc Expert class with two steady rides. He had to settle for second behind Barry Carson in the first round, but reversed that order in mota two for the tie-breaker. Both the 125 and 250cc Novice classes were large enough to require qualifiers leading LO one main event for each. In both classes, two riders separated themselves from the pack to dice alone. In the 250s, Steve Walker and Ray Edwards battled for six laps, trading the lead, before Walker eventually prevailed. Tony Simpson led the 125s out of the gate right up LO the ! Simpson, whose front tire washed out in a sandy berm, remounted to finish second. Results PEE WEE NOV; 1. Tommy Moats (Hon); 2. Brian Alexander (Kaw); 3. Des Peihl(Kaw). PEE WEE AM: 1. Ward wails at Woodland MX By Brian Barnes WOODLAND, WA, MAY 20 Larry Ward (Team Green/HiPoint/DMC/Scott) continued his dominance. of Northwest Mini Expert racing with another double-moLO sweep at the third round of the Yamaha Gold Cup. Ward's main competition came via a duo of Kawasaki-mounted riders, with Oren Bray and Paul Winn second and third overall while Kurt Rogstad was Yamaha's saving grace taking the fourth overall spot. The Pee Wee Expert class found yet another Kawasaki-mounted pair taking the top two spots. Gold Cup regulars Rod Stanley and Shane West put in strong performances to take first and second overall. Stanley claimed both wins and is atop the Gold Cup standings, while West is right behind via his 2-2 performance for second overall. Honda-mounted Michael. Hurst scored thirds in both races to secure third overall and gutsy Louis Aaron rode to fourth even though his rig-ht foot had a cast on it. I ') ... .' J Mike Crowell (Newberg Honda! Ceet) put two great rides together to lay claim to the l25cc Expert class. Crowell took over the top spot during the first lap of both races and never looked back taking both wins. KTM America's Steve Cooper probably worked the hardest of anyone in the class in taking second overall and both runner-up finishes to Crowell. Cooper came from mid-pack starts in each race and worked his way up past everyone except the fleeing Crowell. Another KTM rider, Gard Hollinger, of Alki KTM took both thirds for third overall with Aaron Shardelman and David Thompson putting in consistent rides for fourth and fifth overall. Can anyone stop the "Teddy Bear?" If one rider deserves credit for great performances thus far in the series Troy Stewart should be a top candidate. Sponsored by Yamaha East and his parents, Stewart has dominated the 125cc B class so far to the tune of all six moto wins thus far in the series in one of the largest classes. Today Stewart took his fifth and sixth wins of the series by a safe distance over Beaverton Honda's Kurt Rogstad who scored both seconds. John Calhoun and Garrell Powers traded thirds and fourths, with Calhoun taking third overall with his second moto third. If any class was up for grabs today, it had to be 250cc Expert. With no clear favorites thus far in the series, the 21 rider class was loaded for bear. Honda-mounted Mike Deeney took the holeshot while Roger Sherrell, Tony Fox and SCOll Williams were the next three riders in line. Deeney was up front for a couple of laps but by lap three KTM's Cooper had made his way into the number one spot. Fox and Williams were in a dogfight over second and third. Cooper kept his lead for the win with Williams winning out over Fox after a great race to take second. John Kocher put his CR into the lead of moto number two, but Larter soon passed his fellow Honda ·rider and LOok over the top spot. Larter was on the gas for the first two laps, but on lap three Fox gassed it past the early leader and was up front to stay. Larter held on for second with Sherrell, Cooper, Kocher and Williams third through sixth. Fox got the overall by virtue of his 3-1 tally while Cooper and Sherrel finished out the top three overall. Yamaha East's Kurt Stevens was on track in the Open Expert class taking the overall with his 3-1 tally. Stevens LOok the win during moLO number one over Ron Wallace and Mark Envolseo, but only after both Envolsen and Wallace had also shared •• I 35 .. -
