Olson swings Saddleback victory By Lee Taylor ORA 'GE, CA, MAY 27 The Expert Vet ran amuck at Saddleback this Sunday. Off the line, ick Costello led the charge. Marino Ba tionell, 34 aboard a Suzuki, soon became the ring leader and forced Costello into the rowdy pack. Midway through the first moLO, Ba tionell was lapping riders, and was so far out in front. he couldn't even spot his closest competi tor. Back in the pack, a tight ballie wa going on between Jim Beltinck and Alan Olson, over the runner-up slol. When the moLO drew LO a close, Bastionellled the way, Olson' Honda was firm in econd, with Belmick rounding out the top three. Second moto madness found Beltnick in the driver's seat, [aced with the unenviable task of holding off Bastionell and Costello. Olson, in fourth, was on the gas, and proceeded to unseat Costello and Jody Weisel to zoom into the lead by the white flag lap. When the checkers waved, Olson snatched the gold [or the day, Bastionell cinched second place glory and Behinck's Yamaha gathered third place honors. First motoaction in the I25cc Intermediates found Jeff Barbacovi chasingdown Dale HimmelerichofSuzuki Country and snatching tbe lead away by the end of the first lap. Barbacovi had his hands full with Steve kibeI and Chad Smart, now in third and on the gas. Himmelrich was in trouble, having been pushed back in the field. By moLO'S end, Barbacovi was on a rampage to cross the finish line fir l. Skibel held onto second, fighting off Smart in third. When the machines sprang to life for their final round, Barbacovi led the field up the stan hill with his old foe Skibel close behind, followed by Kawasaki demon, Mike Dawson in third. Skibel snatched the lead only LO find Barbacovi alongside in a wheel-chasing duel, that was brought to a halt when Barbacovi and his Yamaha went over a berm and let kivel on by. Meanwhile, a duel had haped up between Ray Groom and Dawson for third. At the checkered flag. Groom was the moLO winner, with kibei in second and Murray Shackelford third. Results 60 NOV: 1. Palmer pulls DeAnza MX win By Michael Gillies UNNYMEAD, CA, MAY 27 Memorial Day weekend saw a slight decrease in attendence here at DeAnza Cycle Park, with some clas es dwindling to one or two riders. However, Cycle News Assi tam Editor Kit Palmer, on an Eddie Michetti-loaned uzuki, had plenty of competition in the sevenman 250cc Intermediate clas on the way to his 1-2 victory over Suzuki Country's Todd Cunningham. TorcoOil's Keith Dysert ( uz) took the first-moLO holeshot with Malcolm Smith' Tom Thomsen (Yam) and Palmer trailing. Cy Ie Guide's Ron Lawson (Yam) was holding down fourth while Cunningham wa looking [or a line around the I25cc Intermediate leader, uzuki Country's Brian Mayer. By the end of the first lap Palmer had put the m ve n both Thomsen and Dysert. but the lead was still up for grabs because Palmer couldn't pull a lead on the persistant Intermediates. Lawson was pressuring Dysenthrough lap eight when a chain derailment punched a hole in his engine cases, putting him out o[ contention for the day. A Palmer staned lapping the tail end of the 250cc Pro cla s. Thomsen faded a bit as did Dy ert and the order remained through thc checkers. In the second moLO, Thorn en blast- ed into the fir t turn ahead of Dy ert, Cunningham, Palmer and Hondamounted Ken Drake. Thorn en pulled a decisive lead through the first three laps. On lap four. Dy ert stalled and let Cunningham and Palmer by, and they ",em on lo reel in Thomsen. Suddenly, Thomsen's Yamaha threw its chain and ruined hisenginecases, just as Lawson's did in the first moto. This put Cunningham in the lead with Palmer applying pre sure. while Dyserr was back in founh dicing with Drake. Cunningham was doing everything he could to bold off Palmer until lap IO when Palmer swapped ends wh ile landing off the plateau jump and decided LO cruise the rest of the moLO. Hunt hauls at HanneganMX By Paul Nielsen BELLINGHAM, WA, MAY 24 Yamaha rider Steve Hunt dominated the 125cc A class to highlight the regular Thursday night motocro s run by the Ml. By the fiftb lap Webb was up to second and he tried LO reel in Hunt, but he eemed LO tire and at the finish he was only one bikelength ahead of Parker. The 125cc B class seemed roped together a they irculated around the track. Charlie Charlton led off the start on a Honda, and for much of the race he led three other riders, all four equally paced apart. But on the la t lap, Honda-mounted Ed Bakker found a way around Charlton and took the win. cott Wilband was third on another Honda. In Ihe 125cc C class, Yamaha rider Roben Cole led all 20 riders through the first turn, but Jason Dunton (KTM), Archie Parker(Suz) and Thad Ballsmider (Kaw) all had designs on the p sition. However it was Honda-moumed Adrian Moelker on the move, aDd he sl iced his way through the pack LO take the lead on lap six.
