250cc A mains. Hedge opened up the program of main events by blowing the lid off the I25cc A main on his water-cooled MX-based machine, picking up where he left off last season. Hedge had his hands full, though, as Mini Expert winner Billy Lenz chased all the way to the checkered flag, only to get a view of Hedge from behind. Fran Gilhoover, who is always in the hunt, finished third behind the hard-charging duo. The 250cc A main had Hedge again fly into an untouchable lead over Paul Phelps, Lenz, Jerry Kopp and SCOltCoyne. Phelps was to be Hedge's closest competition in the main, while Lenz was left to fend off Kopp and Coyne, who suffered another breakdown, to let Kopp off the hook. Hedge added the 250cc win to his tally with Phelps second and Lenz third, in a three class effort. Yamamoto and his brother Rustv played "follow the leader" in the 250cc Expert money race, which also included the heat races. Rusty would have loved to have taken the win away from big brother, but when the bucks are on the line, Ron gets serious. Ron didn't have to ride real hard to beat Rusty and AMA Novice Pro Rodney Ginn to the flag. He secured the top payoff position, warming up for the big bore classes .which would prove to bea much greater challenge. Arney Wick (Tae West/Advanced Auto/Coeur D' Alene Hon) and Yamamoto tangled in the preliminaries, with thewin going to Wick. Wick was confident at the initial staging of the 500cc Expert main, but was in for a shock, as Yamamoto put the hammer down to lead Wick and Jeffrey Seldon into turn one, then down the high speed straight. These Idaho riders take racing seriousIy and it was apparent that Wick was not going to let Yamamoto win easily. Wick and Yamamoto battled throughout the entire main event, just as they have for many years, but it was Yamamoto coming up with his second win of the evening. A familiar Honda with a familiar #46 white plate graced the pole position, ready to make ita sweep. "Kamakazi" shot off the line and proceeded to blister the course, with his feet on the pegs, sliding in the speedway style that the Spokane rider uses so well. Wick again got a view that wasn't to his liking; and took runnerup honors for the second time of the evening. Missing from the picture was last year's sensation Tony Cruickshank, track champion in the Open and 500cc Expert classes, that gave Yamamoto a free and clear domination of a fine evening of racing in the Idaho panhandle. Trixy DarraH Hicks hot in Dunestown series By Tom Corley VALENCIA, CA, MAY 6 Round two of the California Racing Club's Dunestown Series took place on the Indian Dunes International track today. Hundreds came out to participate with 18 events plus several final events. One of the finest gatherings of M'oiExn rtr'ner ~'I~tJ oranexdt-, .• m~d.. j1'~ ~f '.It .. "'t. ,'lot J , , \ , ingday, and when all was done it was DMC ace Eddie Hicks with two wins. It was a factory battle right from the start of the 80cc Expert event. Bobby Moore took his Kawasaki to the lead over Hicks and Kyle Lewis. Traveling over a set of whoops, Moore got out of control and lost the lead. Hicks became the new leader with Moore losing only one spot, while Lewis remained in third place ahead of another DMC rider Colin Karcher and Mike McClain. In the fihalmoto Hicks didn't have to count on another rider making a mistake in order to take the win. Hicks took the early lead and made Moore trail him the entire time. Once again Lewis proved to be the third fastest rider. Suzuki rider Greg Vowell was fourth ahead of McClain. In the highly tuned 80cc Modified Expert class it was Moore who blasted out ahead in the first moto. It was a Kawasaki rally with Moore in first and Lewis in second. The rally was destroyed when the two came in a corner and tangled up. Hicks took advantage of this and became the leader. The race was then a Yamaha rally with Hicks in first and Karcher in second. Vowell took third ahead of Lewis and Ward Bassett, another DMC Yamaha rider. The final moto was very competitive. Moore took the lead but going through a hairpin turn Hicks took it over. While still on the same lap, Moore regained the lead and from that point on never let it go. Hicks became the runner-up over Lewis, Karcher and Vowell. , Results PEE WEE: Jeff Willoh (Yam); 2. "Radical Ron" rules at Ascot By Tom Corley GARDENA, CA, MAY 9 Radical Ron Turner continues to be in the money in the Continental Motosport Club-sanctioned Ascot motocross. Tonight Turner LOok his FMF firebreathing Cagivas to both the 125cc and 250cc Pro win. Paul Denis made a rare appearance at Ascot and flew to the runner-up position in the 125cc contest. Out to win his weekly paycqec {w~~ITW~r t r ?,LJ w,9-0~~tJ~d1' . , . ; for the second place 250 award and the top honors in the 500s. The Team Green rider Denis surprised the long-time riders in the 125cc Pro class when he took the holeshot in the first moto. Turner was out to get the newcomer from second and so was Tim Lunde in third. Past the finish line Turner tried to pass Denis but failed, but Turner finally succeeded to pass Denis while hauling over the crash wall jumps. From that point on it was "Radical Ron" with the lead over Denis. Lunde claimed third place, also for FMF, while Kenny Clifton and Suzuki of Van Nuys rider Bruce Delgado placed fourth and fifth. In the final moto, turner took his Cagiva to the early lead. Denis followed Turner the whole time but didn't come close to passing him. Delgado maintained third place until Clifton demoted him back to fourth. Todd Peterson took his Mid-Cities Honda to the lead at the start of the 250cc Pro contest. Mike Nishita was in second holding off Turner arid Denis. Towards the end of the race, positions altered as Nishita dropped back to fourth. Turner advanced to second behind Peterson, while Pete Murray worked past Denis to take third. Peterson too.l< the holeshot in the final round just like he did in the first moto. However, Turner was getting radical and flew past Todd over the crash wall jumps to take away the lead. Murray was in third place. Reckless Rob Trone from Mid-Cities was in fourth but dropped back to sixth. Nishita advanced to fourth and Denis was once again the fifth place rider. Peterson had a clean win in the 500cc Pro class with two first-place wins. Though, in the final moto, Dave Foltz made Peterson work for the lead. Mike McMillen placed second overall with Foltz taking third. Results 80 NOV #1: 1. Lenny Jones (Yam); 2. Rusty Somers (Klw); 3. Shane Scarpiello (Han). 80 NOV #2: 1. Demetri Kallios (Kaw); 2. Pro payoff at Spearfish MX By Brian George SPEARFISH, SD, MAY 6 In the professional ranks, three riders went at it all afternoon for top overall money; American Honda/Spearfish Hondasponsored Mike Friend, Rice Cycles' Dave Molder, and Molder's teammate Billy Stork. Honda-mounted Billy Stork managed a third overall in the 250cc Pro class at Spearfish MX. with the 125cc top honors, while Friend bagged the top 250cc bucks for his efforts. In Open competition, Molder went unchallenged for two motos, leaving him with another overall win in that category. First out of the gate were the I25cc Pros, led into the first corner by Billy Stork and Dave Molder, who were side-by-side. Molder came out with the top slot while Friend slipped into third to battle Stork. Stork managed to hold on to second only for a short time, as his ATAC butterfly was in backwards and robbing his CRI25 of power. Friend took over second and moved within striking distance of Molder two laps from the finish, but went down. He had to settle for second at the wire behind Molder and just ahead of Stork. Moto two was a near repeat of the first, as Molder took over the early lead and left the rest of the riders. Friend and Stork went into the second and third place slots, pushing each other until Friend went down, giving Stork the runner-up position. Friend remounted and caught Stork and this time Stork went down, allowing Friend to slide in behind Molder. At the wire Molder LOok the moto and overall win ahead of Friend, while Stork dropped to fourth behind Satce Waugh, but still picked up third in the money. In the 250cc Pro battles, the same trio of riders, Molder, Stork and Friend, went into the first tum spread apart, but by the end of the first few laps, were one-two-three. Molder had control, while Friend chased closely behind. The leading duo pulled a bit of a margin on Stork, but Friend was not able to challenge Molder by the time the final lap was completed. Molder took the first moto win ahead of Friend, Stork, Curt Hyde and Lynn Hyde. Round two saw the lead go to the hands of Friend, while it was Molder's turn for the first time, to chase. Friend put in a very strong ride out in front. The race for the overall between Friend and Molder went moto-Iong, but in the end it was Friend taking the checkered flag first for the overall victory. Molder settled for second in both tbe moto, and day's final tally. Stork ran in a comfortable third, while Curt Hyde led L nn H de J 1. I • 'lot 1 J I fi rC ',. -,"} J; fo hi ~ 1, ~ 'i O.d.L\' 3~ ~
