Leni Faas and Keith Larsen ~ice at Costa Mesa. where Faas and Christian we;e 2-3 in the Scratch main. Ferrell. Faas fast at Long Beach By Scott Daloisio LO G BEACH, CA, MAY 19 "Dangerous" Dubb Ferrell added to the intrigue of the June 9 American Final when he defeated the two big favorites to • win the cratch main on the highbanked quarter mile at Veterans Memorial tadi urn. Ferrell (ArailSl.:P/Vera's/Cosby Oil), coming out of the three hole, was third on the start behind big favorites Mike Faria and Kelly Moran. He quickly rode the factory Jawa around the outside to take Moran for second in turn twO and then blazed by Faria for the lead when the latter bobbled in turn four on the opener. Once Ferrel was out front, the attention switched to the battle for second between Faria and Moran. Faria consistently rode it in high and came off low, thus blocking Moran's attempts to move by for second. Even though he was trying to protect his secondplace postion, Faria took one la t shot at Ferrell on the final lap. He closed the gap in turn tW9 but Ferrell easily pulled him as they sped down the back chute. Coming off four for the final time, Ferrell took a look over his shoulder and then waved to the crowd when he realized that he had the win safely tucked away. Faria followed across the line three lengths back in second with Moran third and John andona fourth. In the pits after the race, Ferrell, who wi II be a father for the first time in August, said, "I felt good all night long and I just went for it. I knew I had to get a good gateoutofthreeand I did. When Faria bobbled I was ready and just went by." The Handicap main looked like Weslake company picnic as the English-made machine comprised five spots in the six-bike field. The only invader was Marlin who seems to be showing up everywhere the pa t few weeks with his. Godden. Dennis Bransford beat Greg Ayers off the 20 at the start, only to have Ayers take the lead away in turn two. Leni Faas (Boot Ranch/King O'Lawn/Simpson/Jones Goggles Wes) relegated Bransford to third before the end of the first circuit and then went after Ayers. He chopped down the distance between himself and the leader, as- suming the point position on the back straightaway on lap three. Faria was also moving into the hunt when he took third from Bransford by the end of lap three. The rider who boldly predicted earlier in the week, ''I'm going to win Long Beach," then got Ayers and set sail for Faas. On the final lap he tried Faas out of turn two only to be blocked. Coming out of four on the final gO-'round Faria ducked low and pulled alongside Faas. The two Weslake riders flew down the final half chute and pa t the checkered flag side by side. The crowd was going wild as the judges were making their decision which went to Faa. Ayers took third. Results SCRATCH MAIN: 1. Dubb Ferrell (Jew); 2. Mike Ferie (Wesl; 3. Kelly Moran (Goddl; 4. Moran near perfect at Costa Mesa By Scott Daloisio COSTA MESA, CA, MAY 18 Red-hot Kelly Moran pulled off the first double win of the season in southern California and he almost pulled off the rare clean sweep as he won five of six rides at the Orange County Fairgrounds. There were 6,430 fan on hand and about 6,429 crashes to keep them entertained throughout the evening but through it all the spotlight shined on a great display of riding by Moran. After taking a second in hi Handicap heat, Moran rode the STP/ Arai/Oakley/UNO/Kal-Gard Godden to five straight wins including two spine-tingling performances in the Handicap semi and main. In the Handicap main, Mike Mazzacane put the Maely in the lead at the start over "Fast" Eddie Castro. Moran immediately began his charge and he put the crowd on their feet with a spectacular outside pass of Sterling Cogar and Tom Burba coming out of turn four on lap two for second. At that time, the only thing separating Moran and Mazzacane was real estate and he bought that up quickly and swept by the leade~ co~ ing off four on the fourth ClrculL Once he did that there wa no stopping the popular rider as he'took his first main event of the evening. Mazzacane held his place to finish second while Cogar came across the line in third. By the time the Scratch main rolled out the crowd w
