DeAnza Cycle Park proposed land expansion. debate By Kit Palmer RIVERSIDE, CA, MAY 15 The Riverside Board of Supervisors have yet to reach a decision concerning the proposed land expansion of DeAnza Cycle Park after a three and a half hour public bearing. In 1978. DeAnza Cycle Park was granted 6.8 million dollars from the Off Highway Vehicle green sticker fund to expand the park to 4.100 from 600 acres. The plans for the park includes a lighted Supercross track, speedway, f1attrack, sand drags, ATV tracks, bicycle motocross, Baja racing, motocross and trail riding. However, after the land was already purchased with the approval of the Coun ty, efforts to stop the project by nearby residents and environmentalists succeeded. Since then, an emotional war to enlarge the park has been in high gear. . Opposition's primary cocern is the increased traffic, noises and dust in the Beaumont, Redlands and Sunnymead areas. Environmentalists expressed high concern of erosion and the possible extinction of the Blacktailed Gnat Catcher bird that exist throughout.the San Timoteo Canyon region, the same region where DeAnza is located. Earlier proposals pertaining to access roads which need to be built to the park was turned down because of unsafe traffic conditions determined by the California Highway Patrol. New proposals were drawn up and handed to the board with favorable results. The CHP approved of the new plans. Of all the proposed competition events, the sand drags was .the most heavily fired upon by residents. They are concerned with noise, dust and erosion on a flood basin where the event will be held. At this time a new location for the sand drags is doubtful and may be eliminated from the plans. The hearing room was almost a .. full house divided nearly equally of pros and cons. Some speaking in favor of the expansion were Louis McKey, better known as the Phantom Duck of the Desert, Malcolm Smith, Ed Waldheim of AMA/D-37, Mark Porter from Yamaha Motor Corporation and a representative from the Motorcycle Industry Council. There were a few comical suggestions from the opposition such as using the OHV green sticker fund to turn DeAnza into a recreation park with grass, a baseball diamond and fishing; while another suggestion was to go through with the expansion without any competition events. The three member board did not make a final decision that was thought to happen. Instead, there will be a public meeting in three weeks, June 5, which might determine the outcome. • Moolah Shrine Temple Presents Busch National Motorcycle Championship A CAMEL PRO EVENT BUSCH STADIUM, Sl: LOUIS, MO ~ SATURDA~ JULY 7, 8 PM 1ST TIME IN THE STADIUM!
