Ago held off MV's Gian(ranco Bonera [or the 500cc win after Phil, Read seized. In the 350s, Agostini simply outlasted the field in a driving rainstorm. In a joint statement, R.J. Reynolds' Ralph Seagraves and the AMA's Ed Youngblood announced a three-race, $15,000 Camel Pro Series. The races involved in the promotion were the Laguna Seca Road Race National, the Santa Fe Short Track National and the Terre Haute Half Mile National. Yamaha,got i'ts newest (and youngest) factory rider when they signed 14-year-old Randy Mamola of Santa Clara, California. Kenny Roberts inched his factory Yamaha past the factory Harley-Davidson of Gary Scott coming off the final corner and went on to win the San Jose Mile. To make it a sweep by factory riders, Yamaha's Gene Romero finished third. In the Junior final, Bruce Hanlon took the win over Tom Berry and Alex Jorgensen. "Mudbath" was the term used to describe the 250/500cc AMA National MX held at Hamersville, Ohio. The 250cc classers were taken to the cleaners by Yamaha's Pierre Karsmakers, who won both motos. Second overall went to Suzuki's Rich Thorwaldson with a 3-5 score. In the 500s, Kawasaki'sJimmy Weinert also treated himself to a double moto win. The Desert Racing Association held a special event called the Silver Cup, open to its top point riders. Bill Saltzman took the Cup with a winning ride on a 400 Husky followed by Howard McCasland on another Swedish big-bore. Third overall went to 175 Yamaha rider Phil Stumbo. Art Knapp finished second and Kevin Hasten averted a Husky sweep by finishing third on a bigCl. Bultaco riders won the 125 and 500cc classes of an inter-AMA/Trans-AMA MX Qualifier at Bend, Oregon. Fred Joehnck won the former; Rick Burgett the latter. Husky pilot Richard Grafton won the 250s. Mike Bast's eight-in-a-row Scratch main winning streak came to an end when he crashed while leading the Ventura Scratch main, which went to Bill Cody. Bastdid win a pair during the week, and Danny Becker rode to victory in another. John Ulrich covered the High Sierra Enduro, although he didA't finish it when he missed a corner, went off a cliff and his 125 DKW landed (and was ensnared) in a tree. 21
