AFTER OUR ENGI EERS HEDTHEBEST CYCLE PRODUCTS, WE CANNED THEM. Seventh-placer Fritz Kadlec was top non-desert rider. and Alan Barker (C-A) were leading a pitched batLle of the boomers in the Four-Stroke class to pUlthem among the overall leaders. Surprisingly (or not surprisingly) enough, the eastcoast contingent of riders reatly had their work cut out for them, if not because of the dust and desert, then due to the talents of local riders who race the area regularly. Riders like Can-Am's John Martin were way back in the pack, trying to cope with the heat and dust. And outside of Fritz Kadlec, who placed eventh overall, the next highest placing easterner was Husky's Mike Melton, who finished 11th overall. Nursing his flat rear tire, Ashcraft rolled into the finish area as the winner of the Lucerne National Hare Scrambles, less than a minute ahead of Ballard. "I got a flat on both tires by Camp Rock Road," said Ashcraft after the race. "That's when they ran us on the ridge. I must've hit a rock prelly hard, but fortunately I had a big enough lead to change both tires and keep my lead. 1 had two minutes on second when I got my next flat! We've been riding some new IO-ply rated Dunlops, and never had any flats when we raced Baja." Ashcraft said that this was his first major race since breaking his ribs six weeks ago while competing with partner Dan Smith in the San Felipe 250. "I knew that I'd do good. I just kept tell ing myself to relax during the race." . Second-overall finisher Ballard observed that the course was "similar to Australia, butthe parts that I try to avoid like the plague'" The Can-Am rider said that he had a good ride and maintained a reasonable pace throughout the event, which allowed him to quickly move up through traffic. "I think I got faster as the laps went by," Ballard said. In regards to his brief duel with Ashcraft, Ballard continued, "I tried to stay with him when he passed me, but it was a dusty section and I had to let him go. 1 waited and hoped he'd have another flat. If there had been another lap, 1 would've caught him." Unofficial Results • OVERALL: 1. Oan Ashcraft(Hus); 2. Geoff Ballard (C-A); 3. Ed Pierce Jr. (Vam); 4. Larry Roeseler(Hus); 5.
