'82 Nationa' Endurance Champions TEAM HAMMER Champions TEAM COWBOY TEAM NORTHRIDGE RACING SUZUKI HONDA YAMAHA PO FOLKS RACING KAWASAKI (') Faria ties Ventura track record By Bill Locey VENTURA, CA, MAY 8 Mike Faria tied the Ventura Raceway track record by winning the Scratch main for the fifth straight week. That puts him in the high-rent district with ·a couple of guys named Mike Bast and Alan Christian. Kurt Strommer, in a dashing display of variety on wheels, became the sixth different rider to win the Handicap main this year. Strom mer won his heat without problem especially after those in front of him ran the wr.ong gearing, and consequently went too slow. After knocking new guy Larry Willey out of the way and onto his wallet, Strommer kept the others behind him to win his semi off the 20. Meanwhile, Andy orthrup was also unbeaten in two tries to qualify for the main. In the main, Tim McCasland fell around turn three and Faria and Ed Castro just missed him. A few laps later, Strommer caught low-yardage rider Joe Kreisberg, passed him, and won by about five lengths. Northrup was second. In Scratch racing, after Faria, McCasland and Buddy Robinson won heats, young Bob Ott not only bottled up Castro for four laps but even lastturned Bobby McLain to win the final heat. In his semi, Ott pulled a trick no one had seen before. While chasing Northrup, Ott was flying on the outside when he fell around turn three and landed on his backside; but then he amazingly bounced back up, regained control, and kept going. Ott lost his transfer, but won the crowd. Everyone was feeling antsy for the other semi. Even Faria stretched the tapes anticipating the start. McLain stretched too far, broke the tapes, and was excluded. Faria took the threeman go. The main was history by turn two as Faria got the best start and cruised into the record books. In Second Division racing, Jeff Springman proved to be too good for the IO-yard-line as he won his heat and the main, thoroughly enjoying his Ventura debut. Springman's win spoiled life for Rich Sweaney who was second in the main, thus ending his streak of three straight trophies. In the Third Division Main, 10yard-line rider Jeff Jones started on the pole on the zero, and since no one complained until afterwards, led the main without much problem, until the last half lap when he blew it and local Jim Peery nearly caught him at the line.
