Moran (STP/Oakley/Arai Godd), who has been plagued by motor problems during the mains throughout the season, seemed to have the same problem in the Handicap main but he had it all dialed in when he rolled onto the track for the Scratch finale. As the tapes flew up the world-class rider emerged first from the gate over Mike Faria, Wednesday-night winner John Sandona and Buddy Robinson, who is being heavily recruited by the DevAir Exeter Falcons of the British League. The order stayed the same the entire distance, giving Moran a clean and very popular sweep with the fans on the Scratch side of the program. The win was Moran's second of the season at Costa Mesa. Another Costa Mesa crowd favorite, "Dangerous Dubb" Ferrell jockeyed the factory J awa to the gold in the Handicap main after coming off the 40- ard line. Dennis Bri £ ho - the year at Baylands Raceway Park. The second night of AMA Speedway racing on the Baylands oneseventh-mile oval was much better for the 28-year-old rider than openjng night was. He was leading the opening night Scratch final until the final turn when he slipped out and let Tom Ferris past for the win. This time Faria made certain that his Oakley-sponsored Jawa would be first across the finish line, as he led wire to wire to take the victory over thenight's high-dollar winner, Duane Yarrow aboard the Snooky Owen Weslake. Marc Prince on a Jawa was third and Mike Parsons was last after falling off on the opening lap. Up until the Scratch final, Yarrow had gone undefeated in the night's racing. He went under Robert "Kid" Curry on the second lap of the Handicap final, and went on to win on his Weslake, with Curry second, and Paul Orlandi third. Price was fourth and Pat Linn look fifth, while Mike Parsons took a tumble on the opening lap and was out of action for the rest of the race. Near disaster struck in the Handicap Consolation when second-running Charlie Haines bounced the crash wall coming off the fourth corner and came back across the track, triggering a five-rider crash on the front straightaway. Knocked off in the melee were Steve Martin, John Volk, Rocky Robinson and Dennis Davis. Davis appeared to come out the worse, with a possible collarbone or shoulder injury. Mark Dragony, the only rider not in the mix-up, came back to win on the restart. Hometown rider Scot NelsOn rode his Contractors Equipment Inc. Jawa to victory in the Second Divis.ion final over Jeff Brown and Johnny Vaughn. The Third Division main saw AMA Class C rider Billy SCOll ride the Agness Leathers/Simpson Sports/Oilzall Jawa to victory from the 20-yard line, over another former flat tracker Ron Arlt and first nighter Kenny Wellingfald. Sandona stars at IMS By Scott Daloisio SAN BERNARDINO, CA, MAY 9 Popular local rider John Sandona held a star-studded field at bay to capture his first Scratch main of the season at John LaDouceur's Inland Motorcycle Speedway. Sandona (Team Tamm/Arai/Moto-Pro Lubricants/Malcolm Smith/ Oakley/Circle Industries Wes), who has been one of the hottest riders of the season at IMS, came out of the gate in second spot behind Alan Christian. It didn't stay that way for long as Sandona breezed by on the inside in turn one. Christian, using the edge of the cushion, continually pulled alongside Sandona in the corners in the battle for the top spot, with Kelly Moran and Buddy Robinson dueling for third one length back. Even though Christian was able to pull even in the corners, Sandona was able to outdrag hillJ on the chutes and he took the win in a wheelie by one length. Moran finished a close third just ahead of Robinson. "Boy, I needed that. The house payment is due," exclaimed an elated Dennis Briggs (Oakley/Tricks by Windy Godd) after taking his first IMS Handicap main of the season. After winning both his heat and semi from the 10, Briggs outraced Cary Faas and Kurt Strom mer on the start of the main. He fought off a determined Faas over the first three laps and then had it easy the remainder of the way as Strommer, Faas, Robillson, Mike Mazzacaneand Kelly Moran had a battle royale for second. As the dust cleared it was Strommercoming across the line behind Briggs, followed by Robinson and Mauacane. Expectant father Mark Weaver (Jones Goggles/Kal-Gard Godd) rode a smooth race from the 20 to win both his heat and the main in Second Division. Weaver chased Bentley Barrett, who was setting an extremely fast pace, until the end of lap four when he moved into the point position. Weaver's good £fiend Pat Cain inherited second when Barrett went wide in the final corner. Ronnie Correy took third with Weaver's brotherin-law Randy Bennell fourth and Barrell fifth. Impressive Rich Sweaney (Jaw) led the entire distance to take the win in the Third Division main. Sweaney was chased across the line by two other fine-looking prospects, Dennis Hall and Don BUller. Guess who won the Junior Speedway main event? That's right, as usual it was smooth-riding Jessee Finch taking the win all the way from the 40-yard line. Finch passed Charlie Kolander late in the race for the lead and eventual win. Kolander hung on for second with Jordan Duncan third. IMS favorite Mike Faria was forced to sit out tonight's action after he sliced his finger with a razor blade while cutting a tire before the races. ing to repeat his Wednesday performance, jumped out to the early lead from the 20 over Craig Schaefer and Ferrell (Arai/Vera's/STP Jaw). Moran, coming all the way from the 50, had motor problems on the start. "We backed off the timing and I thought that was the cause of the problem at first but then it started running fine. I really don't know what was wrong." Whatever the problem, it prevented the National Champio.n from possibly winning both mams. Ferrell took Schaefer on the opener and quickly hunted down Briggs. He hounded Briggs until the third revolution, when he made the pass that put him into the lead for keeps. Alan Christian quickly followed Ferrell by Briggs and had second in the bag until he highsided in the first bend on the final circuit, forcing Moran to also lay it down. FerrenI took the win with the reshuffled field finishing with Sterling Cogar in second and Schaefer in third. . "Radical" Bob Oll (Wes) destroyed the field to win his first Costa Mesa Second Division main of the season. After having no problem in taking the win from the 10 in his heat, Ott did likewise in the main and took the Results win by seven lengths over Jeff SpringSCRATCH MAIN: 1. Dave Faria Jr. (Jaw); 2.
