Keller, Spangler smoke Oregon MX By Clay Light EUGENE, OR, MAY 6 AMA National campaigners Rodney Keller (Yamaha/Honda of Roseburg/Roger Campbell/Pepsi) and Joe Spangler (Self/Light Racing Products) look convincing I-I molO wins in the 250 and 125cc Professional classes at Emerald Racing Association's MX championship rouod. As usual, the prestigious Jeff Cairns memorial award was given out 10 the outstanding sponsman, just as it is every year. This time it went 10 Jim Wiser. The award is given in memory of Cairns, a former 125cc State MX champion who wed in a tragic auto accidenl. To present the award was Jeff's father Ted Cairns, as he has each year since the initial presentation in 1978. Due 10 a large draw to the Seattle area Gold Cup MX race, many tracks feared that allendance would be low but, since Eugene is a good 300 plus miles from Seallle, E.R.A. fared quite well. The Pro class was above par, gating a good sized pack for a combined outing. Steve Williams (Honda Suppon) led the initial lap of warfare, but it was Keller pUlling a move on the veteran Williams as he blitzed into the lead and puJled away at a blistering rate. Rick Gunderson (Yam) and David Riemer (Yarn) trailed the duo of Hondas for the entire race while I25cc riders Spangler (Suz) and Larry Brumwell (Kaw) moved up through the dust to challenge the larger displacement machinery. Keller had a lonely lead, going all the way to the checkered flag to beat Williams, Gunderson, Riemer and Spangler, who filled the top five at the finish. Moto two had Williams and Keller shoot off the line, leaving all others doomed for back seat positions. Keller crept away from the field into another untouchable lead, heading a freighttrain of southern Oregon Pros. Spangler was tops in the I25cc Pro portion once again for top payo(f in the class, and Keller's double moto demolition earned a nice payoff for his efforts. Among the other outstanding races was the old guys, also known as the 3010 40 class. Lenny Reidinger was a familiar face around here for many years, but then he hung it up for a while. Reidinger came back today 10 haunt the class, raking a I-I tally on the day, in the grueling 20 minute molOs. Charlie Standeford and Charlie Harter kept Reidinger busy both motos after playing catch up. They went 2-3 in both outings'for the final trophy spots. Wiser needed two extra arms for carting away all the brass that he had won, including the Open Intermediate win. Wiser had to first put away Scott Sigmund's four-stroke Honda 500 and Stan Walters, who were looking 10 spoil Wiser's perfect day. Wiser was the most consistent of the class, going I-I, while the others didn't fare so well. There were some unusual scores when the final results were posted. Sigmund earned second place brass with a 5-2, and Walters got third, going4-3:Wiserended up caningoff four trophies, which included the Cairns award, the portsmanship award, the Open class High-Point trophy and the Open Intermediate trophy for a hard day's, and season's, work. Berluti blasts Sacramento MX By Greg "Nuclear" Neukam SACRAMENTO, CA, APR. 27 Hi-Point/Reno Kawasakisponsored Alan "Bad Boy" Berluti made the long trip from Nevada worthwhile as he LOok the overall win in the 250cc Pro class as the Sacramento Raceway Park Friday night stadium motocross season resumed. II was RCSuzuki-supported Jimmy Robertson. however, who displayed an agg-ressive style while liv-. ing up to his reputation as a "do or die" rider. BerJuti lOok second 10 Hondamounted Larry "Dash" Dashiel in the opening 250cc Pro molO, while RC Suzuki teammates Ken Klein and Robertson and Hi-Point/Kawasaki rider Rodney Harriger rounded out the top fi ve. Robertson blasted into the lead of the second molO with Berluti, Harriger and Klein in hot pursuit. Berluti soon took the lead but Robertson hung close. For the remainder of the moLO, Robertson searched the entire terra-cotta for the magic line around, but the chances looked slim. Then, on the last turn, Robertson banzaied by for the win to the delight of the crowd. Klein took another third while John Papola and Chris Iriguiray finished 4-5, respectively. Berluti's twin seconds were good for the overall win, while Robertson earned second overall. Klein's consistency brough t him thi rd overall. Hi-PointiKawasaki-mounted Harriger turned out to be the star of the 125cc Pro class. Yamaha-mounted Cory Cantaloupi holeshot the first· go-'round and looked to be a sure winner until Harriger put on a last lap blitz that moved him past Klein for third, then at the top of Pro Hill, into the lead as he flew by on the inside of Berluti on the way up, and railed the inside line 10 swoop a surprised 'Loupi coming back down. Harriger styled to the win with Cantaloupi, Berluti and Klein shaking their heads as they followed past the checkered flag in that order. Harrige.r shot into the lead from Oswell top Pro at ~ AM£ Budweiser Challenge Cup By Tom Griffith VALENCIA, CA, APR. 29 The 1984 Budweiser Challenge Cup was hosted today by American Motocross Enterprises on the International track at Indian Dunes Cycle Park. With each rider receiving a commerative mug from AME and Budweiser, Tracy Oswell took his to the pay window after.the 250cc Pro races and filled it with firstplace dollars. Oswell and Pasadena Honda ace Ed Arnet have been battling every week and today was no exception. Arnet grabbed the holeshot of molO one followed too closely by Oswell and Honda rider Jon Nelson. Bumping and shoving, these three warriors suddenly had the Team Green KX of Robert Laughlin and Granada Yamaha YZ250, mounted Erin Buskirk to contend with. Pressing the leaders to the limit, Nelson moved to the front of the field late in the first molO and led a Honda sweep of the first three places as Nerson was followed by Arnetand Oswell. The gate dropped on molO two and again it was the red hoarde up start hill first with Arnet pulling the holeshol. But this time, Nelson bobbled and let Arnet and Oswell pull away in their own two-man race. At the halfway mark, Oswell pushed his CR250 ahead as Arnet fought for number one. Motoring around with some breathing room, Oswell earned his first overall. The 250cc Intermediates added their share of excitemeDlto the day's festivities as Mike Knapp worked up from mid-pack starts in both molOs to bring his Goleta Cycle KTM inlO first with a perfect I-I score. Bill Delgado did all he could muscling his Suzuki Van Nuys RM250 into the lead of each molO, but he could not hold off a determined Knapp. Brad 'Toms, aboard his KX250 from Kaw
