Orr BOYD, TX, APR. 8 Sammy Sweet took a pair of Harley-Davidsons to main event victories at Mike Kidd's Hillside ..Raceway in tonight's doubleheader. In the short track portion of the evening, Sweet won the 250cc Senior main, then went on to claim the Open Senior class in the TT. He also came up with a pair of thirds, one each in the short track Trophy Dash and Open Senior class. The 250cc Senior heats went to Johnny Johnson and Sweet, but the battle for the lead of the main was between Sweet and Scott Scherb. Scherb led for four laps until Sweet made his move in turn four to take the win over Scherb. David Fisher came through the field from the back of the pack to take over third place from Johnson, but he couldn't catch the leaders. One of the largest classes was the Open Senior TT class. Scherb and Sweet split the heat wins. Sweet took over the lead from Gary Kidd on the second lap of the main as Kidd missed the right hand turn and drifted high. Sweet quickly pulled away and never looked back. He was followed to the flag by Randy Whisenant, John Gladwill and Terry Newman, while Scherb had to settle for fifth place. Eight bikes were qualified for the 25Occ/Open combined Trophy Dash on the short track. Sweet qualified from both classes, but elected to run the big bike. When the flag fell, Gladwill jumped into the lead, and led the race wire-to-wire for a welldeserved win. Rusty Gourley finished in second place, with third going to Sweet. Poovey took the lead off the starting line of the crowded main and held it all the way to the finish, doing a wheelie across the line to collect the $500 in prize money. Scotty Adams, Sammy Potter, and Shan Stovall led a fierce battle for second place, which lasted from start to finish. The 250cc Pro-Am main saw Charlie Orr and Johnnie Johnson really slug it out for several laps before Orr's motor gave up, allowing Johnson to take over. Then, from out of nowhere, Dodd Dyson moved up to challenge for the lead. The battle lasted several laps, until Dyson squeezed by the win and the cash. The Honda ace again commanded the Kawasakis of Dodd, Burkham and the Davison brothers. Honda rider Mike Torkelson got between Charlie Davison and Burkham to take over fourth on lap two.
