At the start of the firsl moLO it was Rutherford in the lead. Wafler chaeHer and Craig Whill1ey. two Honda riders in the midst of a pack of green. ran 2-3. The Honda rally was dissolved as Sparks Kawasaki ace Greg Armstrong passed Whitney for third place and then Schaeffer dropped OUI. Ruthf'rford ,,'as headed LOwards viclory when his bikf' started LO lose power. Rutherford firstthoughtth;H the problem was a fouled plug but later discovered that I he si lencer packing had loosened and re Irietf'd his exhausl.. dropping him LO ninth. Gersjf's was moving up rapidly and passed everyone for the win. Armstrong was second with Yamaha rider Eric Clemson third over Whitney. Jim Owen LOok the spotlight in the final moLO. But while in Ihe lead Owen plowed his Suzuki inLO a largf' rock and was knocked completel y out of the race. Thai gave Rutl1erford the lead. Whi tney was second and Gersjes third. As in the first moLO. Whitney was pressured out of the LOp three. Gersjes lapped Whill1ey. as did Clemson. Rutherford had firsl place, but there was a fine baule for second. Clemson worked past Gersjes through a winding seclion and captured second. Gersjes was demoted LO third where he remained. Whitney and Jimmy Huizar were once again fourth and fifth just like in the first mOIO. Gersjes' 1-3 LOpped the class with Clemson (3-2) second and Whitney (4-4) third. Kawasakis also won in the 125cc Pro class with Paul Denis and Jerry Anker 1-2. An il1lense bal'lle for the lead LOok place in the first moLO; several skillful passes ivere performed as Anker and Denis traded Ihe .lead. When Ihe moLO ended Denis had the win over Anker. Taylor Marcell. Richard Fleming and Chris Heinrich. Anker holeshol the final round. Chris Howard was in second with Denis third. Soon Denis worked past Howard and set his sights on Anker. Denis passed Anker. Anker regained the lead once. but then Denis took it back. Howard wasn ··t finished fighting for the lead and he passed Anker to take second. Through the finish it was Denis, Howard, Anker, Billy Frank and Mike Kell. Overall it was Denis, Anker and Kell. The Kawasaki/JT Bel-Ray sponsored Denis won both mOlos for the LOp money win. Anker held a second with a 2-3 score and just barely missed out on the lOp finish jusl like in last year's event. Howard with a 7-2 managed third.
