APR. 15 The Phillip Palfreyman and Perry Melillo team LOpped the Southern California Sideha k A sociation event today at Can- Johnny Ray and his Suzuki dusted the competition in the 250cc Pro class at the 0-37 meet at Sunrise. Ray won both motos. in the Vet race as well as with the -Gang. Bob moved into first for a lap before Ron passed him. Bob gave chase but couldn't match the sizzling pass set by Ron on his 490cc Yamaha. Third place wentLO Too Tall Tim on a 250cc Suzuki. Another guest, Tom Pearl pushed his H LI ky 175 [rom the back o[ the Amateur pack LO first place defeating lhe early leader, Gringo Glen. Glen held on [or two laps after the Husky rider caught him and couldn't maintain the pace any longer. Wet Willy finished third on his new Husky 500. The second moLO had Gringo Glen running third and fourth overall for nearly the entire race. Glen won the race easily ahead o[ guest rider Tom Pearl, Wet Willy and Chassis Chuck, who wapped his shiftless Honda [our-stroke for a friend's Husky 500 at mid-race. Results EX: 1. Runover Ron; 2. Ray dominates 0.37 MXatSunrise Charleen Ho ADELANTO, CA, APR. 15 Suzuki-mounted John Ray cruised to back-to-back wms today in the 250cc Pro class at D-37's meet at Sunrise Cycle 30 Park. Ray's win was fairly easy, but Hawn Mann and Mitch Davis gave it their besl but came up short. The Pro race was combined with all the Intermediat classes, and when the gate dropped [or the start o[ the first moLO it was VicLOrville Suzuki's Ray out in front leading Robert Bar"'llUm (125cc Pro), Davis, Tim Hanna (250cc Inl.) and Greg Fountain (250cc Jnl.). After a so-so start, Mann got on the gas and made h is way through the pack, passing Hanna then selling after Davis. Mann quickly round a way around Davis then started LO duel with Barnum. while Davis started to [eel heavy pressure by Hanna. Ray enjoyed a comfortable but cautious lead halfway through the race. while Mann got by Barnum. who was a Iso passed by Hanna late in the race. Davis started to fade back a bit dropping LO firth. At the checker it was Ray, Mann, Hanna. Barnum and Davis. Ray again put his Suzuki OUI in front o[ the pack at the start o[ the second mOLOahead of Barnum, Fountain and Hanna. Steve Mazzi (250cc Inl.) followed in fouth inches ahead of Mann and Davis. With the completion o[ the first lap, Ray started to pull away while Barnum desperately tried to keep the leader in sighl. Both Fountain and Mann were on the warpath, bUI evenwally Fountain's front wheel washed out ending his hopes. As Barnum tried to keep up 10 Ray. the 125cc rider gained lime on Mann. Then Davis slipped past Hanna and that was the end of any position changing. Ray motored on to take the win and overall ahead o[ Barnum, Mann Davis and Hanna. In the Vet Expert class, Ronnie "Hoot" Gibson thumped his way into the lead at the start of the first moto on his four-stroke Honda. Sam Groce lurked in second while John Webb, John White, Rick Sieman and Kurt Kietrich fought over third. Webb quickly took care of Groce and then did the same to Gibson. At the same time, Dietrich shot passed Sieman for fifth. Groce wasn't about to sellle in third for very long and zapped Gibson and set after Webb, eventually depriving Webbor the LOp spol. However, the race wasn't over yet for Gibson. He toodidn'tlike third and gota second wind, stuffing his Honda past both Webb and Groce. When the excitement finally came LO an end, il was Gibson crossing the che kered [irsl aheado[Groce, Webb and Whil(,. Groce stole the holeshot in the second moto, but he was eventually yon Raceway. Although the johnny and Vinco Palfrevman cluo almost had the win in the bag. an ignition wire 1005 ned while Lhey weredominating the first moto and ruined their chances o[ a sure overall viclory. In the first moLO. lhe Palfrevman team, aboard a Norton-p0'~ered Wasp. caplUred the early lead with johnny at the controls and Vineo on the chair. Palfreyman Melillo followed in second. Howe"er, near the end o[ the moLO. Palfreyman's Wasp suffered ignition problem pUlling them back in eighlh. whi h gave Palfreyman and Melillo the LOp pol. The Greg mith and Steve Henry team, piloting a smaLL 490cc Maico. inherited econd,whileth MikeCurtis and Todd Redondo team. riding a Yamaha. sellied into third. Wh n the checkered flag appeared. positions were the same. The second moLO saw Curtis Redondo take the early lead. bUI they were soon passed by Palfreyman Palfreyman. After gelling the ignjtion problem soned out between moLOS, the Palfreyman duo had no problems running away with the win. A[ter a [air stan, Palfreyman Melillo began pressuring for second until they had that position sewn up. WiLh a second, the Palfreyman/Melillo duo knew they had things locked up with a 1-2 score. CA, APR. 15 Richard Fernandez and his Honda were unbeatable in today's Coors GP at Saddleback Park during the 125cc ovice oUling. Kawasaki-mounted LeLand AyeI' and Honda pilot Eddie Metro did the best Ihey cou Id do and placed second and third. respectively. When the race started, Metro jumped LO an early lead but langled with another rider up the stan hill. Amateur rider Mark Cook pUI his Kawa aki inLO the LOp spot and stretched his lead LO a comfortable margin. Gary Bartlelt selliedilllo the second position while jason Ingersoll. aboard a Yamaha. held on LO third. Ingersoll was on the ga and pas cd Bartlett and set after the leader Cook wilh good re UIIS. By the end of the third lap Ingersoll had the lead. Fernandez also was havinga fine ride b) laking over the Novice lead and cruising in fourth overall. The duel for the lead cominued a Cook retaliated during Ihe fourth lap, but he couldn't hold on to the lead for very long as Ingersoll, again slipped by taking over the lead for good. During thi lime, Fernandez made hi way into the third overall pot and tried LO catch up to lhe two leaders bUltO no avail. His excellent third-place ride nelled him top trophy in Ihe Novice class. In the 250cc lass. Doug Funderburg sLOle lhe holeshot and held on LO the lead for the first half of the race. Afler a coupleof crashes. Funderburg dropped LO fourth handing the top spots to Everret Neal. john Shaw and Craig Allen. Novice ranked Neal, stretched his lead wilh every turn and went on LO take the win. A tough bailie bel ween Shaw and Allen brewed throughout the race. but Shaw bobbled ncar the end of the race: Allen made his move and zapped Shaw. Allen ended up taking second ahead of Shaw. Honda-mounted Dan DeYoung took the earlv lead at the start of the Pro ShootOlIl·. but he couldn't handle the fast pace Honda pilot Brad McLeod was elling behind. McLeod soon had the lead and took the win un hallenged. Yamaha armed Ted HOyl fini hed econd overall taking Ihe500ccProwin. Ron l'taski (Yam) and Greg Kammerman (Yam) sellied with second and third.
