score. Van der Ven now tops the point standings with 122, followed by Davey Strijbos (Hon) at 103. Strijbos failed to finisb in the top 10 in either moto. Team Marlboro Yamaha's Eddie Lawson won the May 6 Spanish GP which is on the Jarama circuit near Madrid. Lawson's margin of victOf"( over runner-up Randy Mamala (Han) was 27 seconds. Finishing third was Frenchman Raymond Roche (Han). Defending World Champion Freddie Spencer did not compete due to a foot injury suffered in the recent Match Races in England. Lawson now leads Roche in the 500cc GP point standings. 42 to 32. Spencer is third with 15, while Barry Sheene (Suz) and Boet Van Dulmen (Suz) are tied for fourth with 14 points each. Spaniard Sieto Pons (Yarn) won the 250cc GP at Jarama over Frenchman Christian Sarron (Yam). Pons leads the point standings over Sarron, 25 to 24. American Wayne Rainey (Yam) finished 10th after qualifying 7th fastesl. Former World Champion Andre Malherbe (Han) swept the May 5 Spanish round of the World Championship 500cc MX Series. Eric Geboers (Han) was second overall with a 2-3 day, while David Thorpe (Han) was third on the day with 4-2 mota performances. American Danny laPorte was sixth overall with a 6-7 score. Point leader Georges Jobe (Kaw) was fifth overall with a 6-4 tally. Jo Martens (Hus) turned in 6-1 moto finishes to win the May 6 Yugoslavian round of the World Championship 250cc MX Series. Jeremy Whatley (Suz) was second overall with a 5-3 score, while Gert van Doorn (Suz) was third overall with 7-4 moto finishes. Van Doorn now leads Heinz Kinigadner (KTM) in the point standings, 76 to 70. Kinigadner finished second in the first moto, but DNF the second. Marc Velkeneers (Gil), who won the opening moto and DN F the second, is third in the point standings with 67. Carroll Chandler, the AMA professional MX and hillclimb manager was fired on Friday. May 4. Husqvarna'senduro team will be at Sun River Cycles, 11257 Coloma Rd.. in Rancho Cordova, CA., on May 18, between 2:00 and 8:00 p.m. to answer questions on bike prep and riding techniques. Wrangler will pay the top points scorer in the 1984Wrangler Supercross Series $40.000. Last year the top scorer won $30.000. The annual Craig Vetter Fuel Economy Run will be held the weekend of the AMA/Camel Pro Series road races at Laguna Seca July 21-22. The top 12 motorcycles in both "Open" (streamliners, etc.) and "Real Motorcycle" (over-650cc, multi-cylinder, with passenger) classes will qualify for the nickel race at the track on Sunday. The nickel race will feature "real world" speeds (55mph) and the pilot of the last machine left running in each class will pocket a cool $2000. Slowed by a broken thumb, DiStefano lost the title to Jim Weinert, who won the final four events of the series. That was in DiStefano's ultimate privateer days, sleeping in his van, Hotel Dodge. In 1975, 1976 and 1977 DiStefano rode a works Suzuki to the National 25OccChampionship. He now teaches a motocross school with two-day sessions around the country, and rides Husqvarnas. Any privateer finishing in the top five in the Superbike class will win $300 if he uses a Kerker exhaust systam. Winning an AMA/Dragbike Pro E.T. championship will pay $1000 if the rider uses a Kerker system. Kurt Bickel has been named the Jon Woo Memorial Safety Project rider rep for the May 19-20 AMA Pro-Am race at Sears Point Raceway. The RG500 featured last week has a displacement of 494cc, not 499cc as reported. The reported bore and stroke, 64 x 54mm. was correct. Though 199 days remain before the event, AMA District 37 is gearing up for the 1984 Barstow to Vegas Hare & Hound. Going out in style: Harley-Davidson has announced that this is the final year of production for the venerable FlH Electra Glide tourer. the last of the iron-barreled 1340cc V-twins. Harley will build 920 Special Edition FLHX machines as a tribute to the model first introduced in 1966. Special paint. trim and nameplates highlight the Special Edition models. R.j. Reynolds Tobacco Company, sponsors of the AMA Grand National Championship/Camel Pro Series, is backing construction of a spectator bridge to be built at Sears Point International Raceway. The bridge, which is scheduled for completion in ear-ly August, will link the spectator island between turn 10 and the start/ finish line, with the track's paddock area. Donnie Cantaloupi is Team Tamm's newest addition. "They ap-' proached me and wanted me to ride for them in the 500cc National MX events." Cantaloupi said. "I accepted their offer. but I'm having a bit of trouble adapting to the Honda machines after riding Yamahas for so long." Cantaloupi will also ride Supercross races for Team Tamm. Harley-Davidson finishes one-lap rally. But whatta lap. The Cannonball One-Lap of America Rally hit all four comers ofthe U. S. for a total distance of 8706 miles. Seven days (168 hours) were allotted to complete the distance, and a Harley-Davidson FXRT Sport Glide crossed the Darien. Connecticut. finish line at 10:14 p.m. April 23. exactly 168 hours after it started there. H-D employees Ed Michaels, Hal Gottsacker. Rick Jones and Gerry Knackert shared the riding duties. with one rider on the bike and the other three in a chase van. The sale motorcycle among the 76 entries, the Harley-Davidson averaged 62.3 mph and consumed 153.6 gallons of gas for an average of 66.7 mpg. according to Harley.
