the day. Fighting tooth-and-nail behind him were Steve Dick, Robert Holden, and Joe Davis. At the checkered flag, they held those positions for second through fourth places. Bruce Behal looked like a cinch for filth place, but a turn nine get off on the white flag lap moved Jeffrey Dcan into that spot. The 600cc Cafe class win went to Michael Johnson, on a 500 Interceptor, who took home a trick desk pen set for his efforts. Kirk Correll got second place on a Totem Lake Interceptor, ahead of Jeffrey Doon's Yamaha, who was racing two classes at once. Results Walter Nitto. in his usual form on the Moriwaki GPz550. Nitto nailed down wins in the 600cc Superstreet and Modified Production classes at Sears Point. and placed in two other classes as well. Chung storms Sears Point By Roger Smith _ SONOMA, CA, APR. 22 Dwayne Chung took the tightly contested Formula Three win over Kurt Bickel at the AFM North's Easter Sunday meet in 24 a race ladened with national caliber racers and TZ250s warming up for the May Pro-Am at Sears Point. The pre-race favorite, Bob Lugliani, had crashed his ROlax-powered Armstrong in practice and was waLChing from the pits as Chung and Alan Scou charged side-by-side into tum one. Kurt Bickel, in his first 250cc outing since Daytona, was last off the grid. By lap two, Chung was running away from the pack. Scou was in second, but was very busy trying to SlaY in front of hard-chargin~ Brian Tilseth and Bickel, who had found his way toward the front of the pack At the halfway point, Bickel was at Chung's side, but couldn't find a way past him. Several seconds back, Tilseth and ScOll were alternating in third place. The action continued with Bickel never far behind Chung, but unable to get past him. After a last lap pass, Tilseth seemed to have third nailed down until he slid off the track in turn 10 trying to extend his lead over Scou. The 600cc Superstreet class, with a record 58 entries. provided its usual high level of excitement. This year's class leader, Walter Niuo, won the holeshot on his Champion/Mori waki Kawasaki, but Frank Mazur, on a Kurt Jordan-prepared Honda was right behind him. Mazur took the lead with a pass in turn two. Alan Yarrow on his Yamaha thumper passed them both at the end of the long hill leading to turn seven. and set the order for the first lap. Lap two provided an exci ting chase; Kurt Sager. pressured by Mark Ruffner, charged through the field and caught the leaders. As they came down out of the hills, Niuo was in first. Yarrow, Sager and Ruffner were side-by-side through turn nine and the backstraight, fighting for second place. Mazur fell off the pace with tire problems. Niuo held a clear lead until he caught up with the back of the pack. Sager then used the traffic to elude Yarrow and Ruffner. After a eries of brilliant passes, Sager was threatening Niuo, but couldn't pass. He would close rapidly in the twisty sections. but superior horsepower kept Niuo in the lead. Ruffner won his duel with Yarrow to take third. Results FORM I: 1. Denny Doheny (Kaw); 2. Don Greene (Yam); 3. W_ Boyd (Kaw). FORM II: 1. Bernd Koegler (Hon); 2. Doug Filangeri (Kaw); 3. Franklin fast at Can-Am Series opener By Bruce Scholten PORTLAND, OR, APR. 22 Dale Franklin scored four big wins today at the Oregon Motorcycle Road Racing Association meet at Portland International Raceway. This was the first round of the OMRRA Can-Am series and Franklin went home with the Formula One and Two wins in both the point classes and the money races. Franklin used a TZ250 as his weapon in both divisions. When the 600cc Cafe class entered the course for their event, there was a total of 54 bikes ready to race. The class ran in conjunction with the 600cc Modified Production class, and it gave the scorekeepers headaches all day. Leading the whole group was Lee Cochran. Campbell, Word wild at Oregon ST By Clay and Suanne Light CORVALLIS, OR, APR. 21 It was a battle of the big guns in Corvallis at the Oregon State Indoor short track Championship. National Number 70 Jeff Campbell took a thrilling 250cc A main event, but was forced into the runner-up position behind rival National Number 85 Frank Word III, winnerof the evening's 250cc Pro feature race. AMA Junior Ryan Fisher put in one of his best rides of the indoor season to totally route the Open Pro main on this last race of the season. Campbell has made only one appearance in each of the last two seasons. coming up for the championship races to show flashes of brilliance, as in the case tonight. Campbell launched his Hi-Point/ Harry Lillie/Pro-Tech Yamaha into the lead at the snap of the rubber band to lead the 250cc A main for 10 laps of stirring action. Fellow Grants Pass rider Bob Klum (Hon) and AMA Expert Barry Pelkey (Yam) followed suit' by ramming forward from the rear in the eight-rider final. Campbell had a lonely lead while all the action was occuring behind him. The Pekley/Klum bailie finally saw Pelkey pounding his way illlo second, but time was on Campbell's side, as he took the win for the second year in a row over Pelkey, Klum and Ron Adams. AMAJuniorSteveKendigha been consistent all season on the Open machines and landed the Open A main event win on a sano 500cc Honda. Kendig put the tops on SCOll Nelson (C-A), Klum (Hon), and Gary Wolske (Bul). The field for the main barely remained at the finish, as rider after rider went out with problems. Kendig blitzed the remaining contestants to take the win. Klum grabbed second over Rex Fisher and Mike McQuaw (Hon). There's nothing that stirs up the crowd as much as the 250cc Pros staging for a 20-lap final. The heat races were massive chaos, pitting as many as four National numbers in a heat race that transfered the top two. The rest of the riders for the final came from two semi. National number 34 Thomas McCullough (Lou Kinish Yamaha) earned the finaJ transfer, and the stage was set for the best main event of the season. Pelkey (Yam) put his Yamaha Sports Center YZ into the lead and jammed into tuTn one while Word (Adams Cycle Supply/Simpson Yamaha), Campbell, AMA Junior Robert Horban (Suz) and Rookie Expert Jeffrey Harsha (Yam); held down the top positions. The order stayed the same until McCullough overtook Harsha and Horban to move into fourth and join the leading freighttrain. Pelkey hasn't ridden competitively for IWO years, but still knows how to gas it, and left Word and Campbell to try a variety of odd lines in hopes of laking the lead away. Pelkey's luck wasn't to hold, as he tan~led with lappers, which wasa problem all night. Pelkey look a nose dive, which let Word and Campbell move into the lead positions at the flag. with McCullough third for a national-caliber rider sweep. Garner Yamaha/Simpson-sponsored Ryan Fisher flew into the lead at the start of the Open Pro main and never looked back. Chuck Glender, last year's winner, rode in second until a pile-up nixed action. The restart had Horban (Suz) and Harsha (Yam) attempting to steal the show. but Fisher moved inside to take it away. He took it allihe way (0 home plate for his.bi~gesl win of the indoor season over Horban, Nelson. Klum and Glender. Harsha looked to be a challenger but lost his chain and was out for the night, finishing a disappointing seventh behind In~el. Results 250 PRO FEATURE: 1. Frank Word III (Yam); 2.
