Molder takes Rapid City MX By Brian George RAPID CITY. SD, APR. 8 Dave Molder, riding out of Race Cycles in Rapid, took the challenge of three Pro classe today, and nearly captured a 26 triple win. In the 125 and 250cc classes, Molder had LO comend with Billy SLOrk. Molder got the overall in the smaller displacement class, but had to settle for second behind Stork in the 25Os. A large Open Pro field had trouble keeping up with Molder, as he won both motos quite handily in today's Borderline Racing Association event. In the first mow of the I 25cc Pros, SLOrk took the holeshot with Molder slipping in behind. Although Molder kept Stork in sight, he was never seriously threatening the lead. LeeVern Berry and Ladd Poitra fought for the third and fourth plac slots, and at the checkered flag Berry took the show spot behind Stork and Molder. The real war of the l25s erupted in the second moLO. Kevin McNight came up from Colorado to compete, and took the holeshot ahead of Poitra, Stork and Molder. At the end of lap one, SLOrk slid into second and began chasing Mc ighl. A lap later, Molder moved around Poitra and went for the leader . Stork and Molder caught Mc ight, with all three riders separated by onJy a couple of bikelength , untiJ SLOrk took the lead near the halfway mark. McNightand Molder did not allow the new leader any breathing room. In a section of tight whoops late in the moto SLOrk tried to jump the last three whoops, but arne up a bit short. McNight and Molder blew by the leader, with Molder taking McNight for the lead. IOrk caught the frontrunners two laps [rom the end, and pas ed Mcighl. Molder held on for the heckered flag and the overall win, with Stork only three feet behind. ixteen 250cc Pros blasted out of the gate in their first molO. lOrk grabbed the holeshotahead of Friend, Curt Hyde and Molder. The leading duo pulled away from the battle for third between Hyde and Molder. When Molder got by Hyde to take over the third place position, he was nearly a quarter of a Lap down from the leader. IOrk and Friend were runningneck-and-neck until the final twO laps, when Friend, who could not find a way around, sellied back 10 a comfortable second. He was still well ahead of Molder and Tom Peters, who took Hyde for fourth two turns from the end. Friend hung up his boots for the day, su£fering from vision problems. A sliver of metal in his eye had nearly closed both eyel ids during the moLO. In round two of the 250, Hyde took the holeshot with Peter, Molder and SLOrk in tow. After a couple laps in the lead, Hyde lipped in a turn allowing Peters and Molder to shoot by. One lap later. tork took third while Molder outjumped Peter in a whoop section for the lead. Stork caught Peters and stuffed inside him at the botLOm of a pit LO take over second. Stork then caught Molder and dogged him [or the remainder of the moLO, but was unable to ~et around. Johnston steals win in Kansas By Brad and Sharon Jones CHAPMAN, KS, APR. I Kawasaki rider Kurt Johnson emerged victorious in the 125cc Expert class with a 2-1 tally at the Race Place in Chapman. Kevin Wolf and Tim Vaughn did their best LO derail johnston of his win but LO no avail. Wolf looked impressive as he won the first moto, but Tim Vaughn made him work for his win. Wolf was triple jumping the front jumps, while Vaughn was taking them two at a Lime. Vaughn regained ground each lap, but when the white flag came out, he attempted LO triple the jump. The result was that Vaughn crashed hard, smashing his bike and tweaking his ankJe. Wolf went on to win while johnson took over econd and ScOll Ellis came in third. Vaughn grabbed the holeshot in the second moLO and put several econds on jobnston in les than a lap. However, Vaughn' bike quit before he made one circuit. "The pipe was so smashed from the first molO crash that it must have made the mOLOr too hot and seized," Vaughn said. . johnsLOn took over the lead and led for the rest of the race. Ellis came in second while first molO winner Wolf suffered a poor start and worked up to third with some courageous passing over the triple jumps. Brian Carlson of Manhallen, Kansas, took the holeshot at the stan of the first 250cc Expert molO. By lap twO, Vaughn picked off Brad jones and Tony Reynolds and inherited the lead when Carlson's radiator prung a leak. Scott Ellis passed several rid- ets to take over second on lap four. The second moto belonged LO Wolf while Ellis cruised in second for the overall. Vaughn was nearly last on the start, but managed to climb to fourth by the finish. Results MINI MINI: 1. Friend fierce at Sturgis MX opener Duncan does it at Hurst Ranch By Brian George By Rebecca GoodballetHamilton STURGIS, SD, APR. I At today's Borderline Racing Association race, both the 125 and 250cc wins went to Spearfish/American Honda-supported Mike Friend of Rapid City. Friend won both 250cc Pro moto going away, but in the second I25cc bailie found Billy Stork. on a Rex Conradprepared CRI25R. pUlling up a fight for the from spot. In the bigbore Pro class, Dave Molder blasted the entire field in two rounds of easy riding for the overall. The opening molO of the day, the 250cc Pros, headed into the first turn, with Billy Stork in front, followed by Tom Peters, Friend, Molder and Lynn Hyde. Friend began picking his way through the frontrunners until he was right behind the leader, then shot out in from and began to pull away. Peters held strong in the final going to finish a distant second to Friend. MolO two of the 250s found Friend out in front early, but this time Molder was right on his rear fender. For the first half of the moLO Molder was in close pursuit. bUI tried 10 clear a set of four whoops, and caught the fourth one. In the next thirty feet, he tumbled from second 10 dead last. Friend walked o[f with another strong molO vicLOry, while Stork brought hi year-old Yamaha into se ond. The top three slots overall went 10 Friend, Peters, and LOrk. Sixteen riders lined up on the gate for [he opening 125cc Pro moLO, and when the pack headed into the first turn, LeeVern Berry and Rick Wooley were side-by- ide. Berry slammed the door on Wooley in the corner. and when Wooley hit the brakes, a group of riders behind began locking up the binders, cartwheeling into the orner. Berry built a trong lead, but in the last half of the moLO, Friend moved within striking distance of first place. Berry put up a struggle, but Friend set him up with only a few laps remaining and went into the lead around a sweeper for good. Berry and Ladd PoiLra ran second and third ahead of Greg Hyde. Round two saw IOrk and Friend get out of the gate in front of the l25cc pack. LOrk held off Friend the fir t half of the moLO, but took a slow HURST RANCH, TX, APR. 8 either heat nor dust slowed Barry Duncan, when he beat out a field of 92 entrants to win the overall trophy at the Third Annual HurstRanch crambles held in the central Texa hill ountry. Duncan, who is a former pro motocrosser, took the lead on a 250 Yamaha in the first lap and was never headed, making a total of 13 laps during the three-hour race. Taking first in the Open Expert classon a Husqvarna was Rip Woodard, followed by Dan Smith of Cypress, in second, on a Yamaha. Racing [or the first time in over a year, Bob Clark borrowed David Rowland's practice bike and blew away the Over 30 class to take first place while Rowland was winning the 250cc Expert class on a Husky. The lead in the Over 38 class was passed back and forth between Darryl Hurst, a former Grand National rider, and Gary Hamilton. HamillOn quit, however, after one hour due to the extreme heat and dust, while Hurst lasted for two hours, 20 minutes. Both men were riding Yamahas. George Rickard, on a Honda, survived the race to win this class, followed by Herb Fish on another Honda. • Results OVERALL: 1. Barry Duncan (Vam!. NOV MEN: 1. Duggan Hartlog (Kaw); 2.
