I In his first race as a 125cc Intermediate, Van Nuys Cycle/PJI-sponsored Jeff Barbacovi took the victory during California Racing Club motocross at Indian Dunes. Barbacovi is the current holder of the number two plate in the BOcc Expert class, and the time came for him to mount a larger machine and he proved ready for the move. His win today was a matter of ability matched with several lucky breaks. With the start of the first moto, Barbacovi was running in fifth place and his chances of winning looked slim. After a few laps, some major excitement took place, when Guy "Fall Guy" Arnone, Tim Rutherford and Mike Knapp were the front runners until they piled their machines right in front of the score tower. This gave Barbacovi a clear shot at the lead, and when he grabbed it he didn't let go. Barbacovi took the first wave of the checkered flag, then came Granada Yamaha rider Tim Bluth, Guy Arnone, Mike Hughes and Skeeter Lyerla placed behind the leader Barbacovi. Taking a good start was something that Barbacovi couldn't manage, and in the final round he was ninth. Sim- Mike Garrison (51) tjrabs the holeshot at the Gardena Gold Cup main. Doug Chandler (10) !Non. ilar to the first moto there was a pileup right before the score tower, which advanced other riders like Barbacovi, who was then in third. Century Kawasaki rider Rutherford had his act pol· ished this time and flew to the win with Warren Heath placing in second. Both Rutherford and Heath held unfortunate first mota scores and this shotthem down when thefinal results were tallied, so Barbacovi hooked a fine third place win ahead of Mike Little and Hughes. A 1-3 tally did the winning trick for Barbacovi. Getting acquainted to his new Honda, John Hemme had the winningcombination and easily defeated the 250cc Intermediate class. In the firH mota, Hemme rounded the starting bend with a killer holeshot that carried him to the win. Ray Groom followed in second ahead of Jonboy Barrick, Chuck Penny and Scott Yen· zero Once again Hemme took the holeshot in the final round and proceeded to separate from the others. Barrick held down second until he bailed on the stretch before the score tower. With this mistake, Penny advanced to second place, while Barrick got underway and took third place. Groom was fourth and Brad Toms fifth. Results PEE WEE; 1. Pablo Lara (Yam); 2. David Handren (Yam); 3. Jay Theys (Yeml; 4. David Cooke (Yam); 5. Scooler Smith (I.a). PEE WEE EX; 1.
