hiS Lead, whIch he held for a convincing win. The Land/ParkerlArnaiz
battle didn't let up umil lap five,
when Parker was forced high, dropping several positions. This seemed
to inspire the Harley teamster, as he
started a drive that carried him LO
second at the conclusion. Tom Maitland was also· on the move, and
se~red third ~t the completion of
thIS last Expen heat.
Semi-finals
Alex Jorgensen left no doubt in
anyone's mind as to who was going
to win the first semi-final. He pulled
the holeshot and stretched his lead
lap-by-Iap Unlil the finish. For the
other transfer place, there was a contest that kept the crowd on the edge of
their seats. Fran Brown, Doug Chandler and Gary Scou were all trying for
the cove~ed spot, supplying the speclators With some excellem racing. At
the end, they finished in that order,
Brown, Chandler, Scott.
The second semi-final was red(Jagged due toa crash in turn three on
the first lap. The reslan showed much
the same results; Brow was first imo
turn one, followed by Jeff Haney,
Kellh. Day, a~d Arnaiz. The positions
remamed fauly slable-, with the exception of Hames, who was passing a
ri~er about every two laps. On lap
mne, Hames moved past Brow on the
fromstraight. In a near-video finish,
Brow got a wheel past Hames for a
win. Jeff Haney was third, followed
by Keith Day.
Last Chance Qualifier

Some of today's top runners were
on deck prior to the Last Chance race.
Gary Scou, Chandler, Day, and Scou
Pearson were just a few of the names
that didn't make it on their first two
attempts. They wem at it as though it
was the National itself. None of the
top four riders were ever out of contention, but the final order had Jay
Beach on top, followed by Team
~onda's Chandler in third, just behmd Pearson. Chandler later complained of handling problems.
Junior National
Chris Carr was on usual form riding with such smoOlhness and sPeed
that none of his rivals could catch
him. After.laking the top qualifying
spot over slx-teOlhs of a second ahead
of the field, Carr proceeded to run
away from the field on his Ron
Wood-prepared Wood-Rotax. In his
heat, Carr was a full straighlaway
over runner-up Terry Wahl by the
end of the six-lap stim. Dana Perri
rode a Yamaha to third.
