The severe winter Lhis year had left Oak Hill Raceway wiLh sections of lhe asphalL bubbled from its base. Riders saw lrack condilions go from fair on Salurday during praclice to poor lOday at the slart of lhe races wilh some sections down lO 1/3 lhe original width of the track. By lhe Slart of lhe lasl race of the day, the braking area before turn six had a 30 foot seclion wi Lh no asphalL at all! Despile lhe Lrack conditions, there were no serious injuries and Lhe 1,174 people in aLlendance saw an exciling start lO lhe fine racing which is lO come in '84. Charles Brolhers showed why he carled off lhe most Yamaha contingency money for WERA riders last year by taking home four firsl place lrophies loday. Brothers having Lraded-in lasl year's 550 Vision for a RZ350, led wire-lo-wire in C Produclion, C Superbike, D Produclion and D Superbike. PUlting in an impressive ride in A Superbike was Bob Reloff, aboard a Suzuki 1100. Reloff SlaTled behind 15 oLher riders, and by midway Lhrough Lhe first lap he was running fOUTlh, jusllooyards behind firslplace David Cheek, rookie Expert Richard PresCOll in second, and Honda rider Pal Kelly, in lhird. Picking off one rider per lap, Retoff nabbed first place by lhe fOUTlh lap and wenl on to finish 13 seconds ahead of second place. Mall Maschmann, followed by Kelly, Cheek and Prescotl. The Formula Classes proved lO be a one man show. George WaJlace had said lhat no one was going to beal him loday, and he proved himself righl by Laking his TZ250 lO decisive victories in Formulas I, II and III. A heated ballie in B Produclion, turned up belween Prescoll and Ronnie Lunsford, both riding Hondas. PreSCOll gave a heart-Slopping show as he gassed his Interceptor a lillie lOO hard around lhe front turn how- ing the crowd a feel up (in the air and Lhe pegs) slide al 70 mph, and a lucky recovery which surely had his eyes gelting big. After swapping leads during the first seven laps, PrescOll passed Lunsford and made il Slick on lhe eigh Lh and finaJ lap. Kelly grabbed a firsl lap lead in A Produclion followed by John CarLwrighl, PrescOll and Lunsford. While Kelly rode £lawlessly and never relinquished first place, Lhe race for second, third and fourth was exciling, as Lhe riders changed places during each of Lhe firsl six laps. Going inlO lap seven il was Lunsford, Cartwrighl and PreSCOll looking like a fasl freighurain, wilh one behind me olher as lhey finished lhe race in thal order. Harold Pelers scored dual wins, one in E Produclion and one in E Superbike aboard his GPz305, followed closely by David Ray in bolh races. . NOleable in the Novice class was John David scoring wins in D Production and D Superbike, and finishing runner-up in C Produclion and C Superbike.
