Alexander the greatest at Invaders H tn' H By Shirley Upp LUCERNE VALLEY, CA, MAR. 25 Mike "downhill" Alexander (Yam) turned into "Alexander the Great" this weekend as he took the overall win in the 26 Invaders rough and' tough Hare and Hound at Soggy Dry Lake. When the flag dropped at 9:00 a.m., it was Chuck Pettigrew with the fastest bomb run of the day. At the bomb, Pettigrew had the edge on Alexander, but Alexander was pushing hard. At one point these two riders almost collided. A lot of riders went down in the ditch just past the bomb, causing a major traffic jam. Coming out of the first \Sand wash after tbe bomb, it was still Pettigrew in the lead with Alexander second. These two had already started to build a nice cushion between themselves and the pack. The next three riders to break out of the pile-up were all Open Amateurs, Craig Rimlinger, Rodger McCabe and Mike Boling. Running sixth overall and leading the 250cc riders was Andy Matthews. Alexander took the lead at Victor's Pass and was never challenged. Pettigrew dropped out and Dan Smith moved to second; until he ran out of gas. As the riders came through the home check, it was Alexander with a five minute lead. Chris Crandall came next on his dad's Honda four-stroke. Crandall collided with a play rider crossing the course in the pits, and after a bad get-off, was out ofthe race. Thankfully, his injuries were not severe. Open Amateur rider Rodger McCabe came by next in third, followed by john Blakeney who had taken the lead in the 250cc class. Matthews was fifth, and second 250. Recovering from a bad bomb run. and from running out of gas twice, was Pro Cycle rider Ken Upp coming by sixth. Ed Pierce and Dave Chase, both 250cc riders, came by in seventh and eig-ht. In the 250cc Vet class, Bill Becker was staying tough and had a nice lead. In the 250cc Senior class, Ron Hall had everything going right, and was on his way to his first victory in this class. Lanny Lehigh was out in from in tbe Open Senior class, and Larry Gordon was leading Robert Torgerson in the Senior C division. Deane Holeman was leading in the Women's class. In the Novice race, the battle was brewing between Robert Wethgren and Tim Weichers. The last :Ioop was approxiroately 48 miles, with a lot of virgin territory., Coming off the last downhill, it was "Downhill" himseU, Mike Alexander, taking the finish. The crowd cheered as Alexander took his first overall win. Mike said·he never knew how easy it is to race when you're out in front with "no dust." He wanted to thank his sponsors, Montclair Yamaha, Duralube Oil and Yamaha International; and especially his dad, for all the help. john Blakeney pulled in to the finish area for second overall, and first 250, after a super ride. john thanked Bill Saltzman, Larry's Precision Welding and Cycle ~top for their help. Ed Pierce, another Montclair Yamaha rider, pulled in for third, and second 250. Roger McCabe took a well-earned fourth overall, and won the Open Amateur class. Dave Chase, after having his crew pit the wrong rider with his gas and goggles, managed a great ride to finish fifth today. Bill Saltzman pulled in for the sixth and first in the Vet Open class. After moving up to third overa lion the last loop, Ken Upp ran out of gas just short of the finish, dropping him once again to seventh overall and second Open. Upp wanted to thank Chase for the gas and goggles! [n his first desert race, Scott Campbell took eigh th overall and first C bike. As usual, Ken Oviatt turned in a g-ood ride for Pro Cycle at ninth. Roundingout the top ten overall was Bobby Charters taking second C bike. The overall Novice winner today was Robert Wethgren, with Tim Weichers a close second. Results OP EX: 1. M. Alexander; 2. K. II At the start of 1983, Dirt Bike's Tom Webb savored three wins and one second place in the first four California Racing Club Enduros. Now, with the 1984 enduro season well underway, tbree enduros are history and Webb has again collected two consecutive overall victories. Webb was the only rider to complete the three-loop, 75-mile event with a score of one. Only seven. other riders scored in the twos, led by KTM-mounted Scott Sampson (2.80) ...t ..... Caulorala.Art with third overall going to Everett Angle (2.125). Beatrice Huff picked up the overall win for the two-loop contenders but the women's loop was cut short by seven miles to bypass a nasty hill and the finish check point. Huff scored a 1.109 ahead of Caroline Hoisted (2.1 (7) and Tom Veator (3.160). Scott jacobsen (Mini A) turned in another flawless ride to win the overall for one loopers, just 15 seconds ahead of Mini B rider Rob Peters. Loops one and three ran many of the same miles with the speeds on loop three much quicker. Loop two was very challenging. At the 19-mile marker, the women A and B riders ended their enduro but the real nasty part of the course was yet to come. At check eight, the check-in to the specia[ test, the riders were led' into some tight canyons with switchbacks and up a rock- and body-strewn hill, causing a great deal of problems. After tackling the hill the camp and finish of loop two were visible from the ridge. Veator (200cc B-16) turned in the best score for full two loopers dropping 3.160 points. Following Veator were Willie Kennedy (250cc C), Bill Dennis (200ccC), Byron Barr (250cc C) and john Uhern (Open C-4-St). Loop three was so fast you did not have time to work up a sweat. Thirteen miles and 45 minutes was the extent of loop three, with the special tes t bei ng a contest of who cou Id corner the fastest in a canyon. Webb was the on Iy rider to zero th is particu1ar test. Sampson (25Occ AA) picked up second overall behind Webb then Angle (Open AA). The best score for an A rider went to Mark Amendola at fourth overall. joe Wilson turned in top honors for a B rider and also the overall in the 200cc B Vets class. • Results OPEN AA-SR: 1. Kehoe doubles in Skoal $1000 MJC at Saddleback By Tom Corley IRVINE, CA, MAR. 25 The California Racing Club presented the Skoal $1000 MX today at Saddleback Park, and besides the large cash purse, hats were given to. tbe first 100 riders to sign-up. Erik Kehoe from Honda/O'Neal took the lion's share of the money with a first-place victory in both the I25cc and 250cc Pro contests. Yamaha Supponrider Scott Manning took tbe 500cc Pro win. Rare is it that two known Naional riders meet in a local race. Today in the l25cc Pro class it was a match race between the R&D Suzuki rider George Holland and Kehoe. In the first molO it was a rally for Holland, while Kehoe placed second ahead 01 Malcolm Smith's Vince McMahon, Billy Frank and SD Racing's Ti Swartz. Holland took the holeshot in the final moto, but when he rounded the second tum, his bike sbut 0[£ on him. George assumed that his engine seized but it started up again, however, by this time the pack was already gone_ Holland set out after them, and one by one he made his way through the pack. Through the finish it was Kehoe, Holland, Frank, jerry Anker, who is now on Kawasaki, and then McMahon. Kehoe, with a 2-1 tally, was in line for the top award, 'while Holland's bad break in the final moto netted him second overall with a 1-2 tally. Third went to Frank for his 4-3 score, while fourth and fifth went to McMahon and Anker. Kehoe was even more successful in the 250cc Pro class. Kehoe swept both motos over competition that was even tougher with 25 other riders. McMahon came closest to Kehoe in the first round, but in the final bout, it was Brian Myerscough who diced with Kehoe. Myerscough placed second, though he was shot down overall as he took a DNF in the first moto. Five cash awards went to these riders who finished in this order, Erik Kehoe, Vince McMahon, Ed Arnet, Tetsumi Mitsuyasa and Yoshihito Baba. Results 60 NOV: 1. Mike Metzger (Han); 2.
